Tom, you gave us an outstanding list of Camper 'Do and Don't' items.
I have a few more items too.

1. You need to carry TWO electrical adapters for your RV. My unit
only comes with the 30 Amp, three prong plug. You need the adapter
to let you run from your household outlet, a smaller three prong
plug. You also need the larger 50 Amp adapter for use at some of
the more upscale campgrounds.

2. Keep a good flashlight HANDY in the RV.

3. A bbq propane lighter is ideal for lighting the water heater
and stove.

4. Only use the type of toilet paper sold by the RV stores. Regular
toilet paper reacts with the chemicals you put in the holding tank
to form paper mache.... not a good thing.

5. Use a water line pressure regulator when connected to camp site
water. This will assure that high pressure water does not damage
your camper's plumbing.

6. Don't leave the camper with the awning extended. A sudden storm can
rip
it right off the camper.

7. Always do a final check before leaving a camping site. Make sure the
tv
antenna is down, vents closed, leveling blocks stowed and all hook-ups are
disconnected and stowed.

8. Keep the tube that carries butane to the hot water burner clean.
A simple spider web or a dead bug can plug it up and keep it from
lighting,
or worse it can cause the flame to back up in the tube with very bad
results.

9. The left rear wheel (on my unit anyway) has left handed threads on the
lug nuts (turn clockwise to loosen). All other wheels have normal
right handed threads on the lug nuts.

10. When storing the camper close all the curtains and open the
fridge door. I keep the bathroom window open when in storage.

Jack

Thank you Nolan, I am going to run the unit for a summer season and see how
we do with it the way it is. We are going to pull our 73 bug convert to SD
and the Black Hills, I figure if we are unable to pull the bug to Deadwood,
my bride can simply drive it up the hill behind the Toy - what ya

Hi Dick,
You can get more power out of the little 4 cyl without doing a
major overhaul. Theres a fair selection of hopup parts available from
different sources. Headers, cams, carburation setups, ignition, ect.
The usual setup most go for is header and carb swap, the toyota 20
and 22R benifits alot from a cam change, performance ignitions help a
small bit, even an electric fan in place of the belt driven fan will
free up some usable HP. If your dealing with an EFI rig there are
aftermarket parts for them also, computer chips, bigger throttle
bodies, headers, computer cams, high flow injectors, ect. I have done
some major changes on my Chinook with good results and never hurt the
fuel mileage any, I get a consistent 19+ with 4WD and 31" tires.
The worst part of hopping up the toyota is the price of parts, not
that many manufacturers so the price stays up in the higher range.

Subject: [toyota-campers] Refer burpin

Tom,
The refer has a water ammonia mix sealed in the evaporator tubes,
some people have removed the refers after setting and rotate them
over and over to help mix the solution back up, the constant movement
from driving does this also. Its a sealed unit so no service can be
done to remove air or refill ect. The unit needs to be level when
parked because the solution collects at the bottom where the burner
(on gas) or the heating element (on electric) boils the solution and
turns it to gas where it circulates through the system and cools the
refer by means of evaporation, then goes back to liquid returns to
the bottom to do it all over again. They made 2 way and 3 way refers,
2 way work on gas and 110volt, 3 way are gas, 110volt, and 12volt,
which won't cool on 12v only used to help maintain the temp while
driving. The refer should have some means of switching from 12v,
110v, gas, either inside the refer or inside the access cover outside
with a seperate thermostat for either gas or electric. If not level
when parked the solution won't collect under the burner and it will
eventually ruin the unit. Hope this helps you some.

Re: power inverter

B-man, thanks a bunch, as I understand it, I should wait until I know I need
a new battery, I think the one in the unit now works ok from what I can
tell. Send the diagram any time, heck my brother will love studying it guys
like him like to do that sort of thing. I am taking the unit in to get it
checked for a gas leak, and they will also check out the water heater and
the pipes and etc. They also will check the deep cell for me to see if she
still has life in her.

Now we are thinking of having a new "black water" tank put into our unit,
I don't know how many gal. it holds so it is hard to tell the price,
however, it looks like it has been repaired and I don't like the idea of
having a black water tank that leaks - Yuk! We also may have them
re-install the toilet, the original owner took it out because he wanted to
have it easier to take a shower. Now we like things as they are originally
so we may have it put back in, depending on the dollars. Have you ever
worked on any of these parts in your unit? -=dr=-

1. Yes they all have fans

2. If you are going to add a second battery I would recommend
replacing
your

will
have
to
cross connect the terminals to establish 12 volt's but you will

equal to three normal deep cycle batteries and the six volt take
drainage
allot better...You can get these batteries for around $50.00 a
peace....this
is the only way to go.

3. There is a minimal amount of gas put off by the batteries,
you
will
need
to put a small two inch louver vent in the closet...they also
make
battery
boxes with a vent tube installed in them.

If these directions were not very clear, let me know and I will
try
to
be
clearer

Hi Dick, I am intrigued with your idea. That is as close as we
can get to a new camper. I don't see why it can't be done,
the two most difficult things would be the lengthening of the
frame and the actual hoisting of the camper shell off and on the
frames. Out here just about ALL the yard services use 1 ton Toyota trucks
to haul their stuff around. I have not measured the wheel
base of those trucks, but it looks pretty close to what we use. A
good wielding shop could easily do that work, especially if you
already had the camper off your old truck for them to see what was
needed. I am sure you would run into a few unique problems, like
sealing the camper to the new truck, but at least you know it was
done by someone at the factory before you.

Thanks for a serious response.? The pilot stays on after release of button, and stays on (the first time) when I turn the water heater to "on".? The heater stayed on long enough to heat up the heater when full, then pilot and burner go out.
The pilot light did not want to re-light after that.
?
Where is the thermo-couple located?? When I find that, I may just go ahead and replace.

Hi Jim, Welcome to the group. I was interested to hear of your
plan to swap a V6 for your 4 cyl engine. I am an old hot rodder
and have done some engine swaps in my day. I have even been
thinking of putting a Chevy 350 V8 in my camper someday. Here
in California we have some serious restrictions on engine swaps
in 1973 and newer vehicles. If my '86 ever gets exempt from
these restrictions I may give it a shot. There are kits available
to help make that swap. For my money it is easier because it is a simpler
(carbureted) engine.

Your idea of having a complete donor car is very good. You will
find many slight differences that you will have to re-engineer,
but it is certainly do-able.

Here are some to things I am talking about -

1. You will need the V6 radiator, and it may not be a simple
bolt-in operation.

2. The entire engine electronics will have to be swapped. The
engine computer and all its sensors are needed.

3. The V6 exhaust system needs to be brought along, and there
may be some interferences.

4. The fuel delivery system on a fuel injected engine is different.
The high pressure electric fuel pump and the return lines are
needed.

5. You have already touched on the motor mount issue.

So, I hope you go for it. Keep good notes because we will all be
interested in the project.

My dad died last September and my mom is thinking of selling their

rust) and they just put in a new engine (at a cost of $6,000 out in

Probably less than 1,000 on the new engine.

I have a 87 Mini Cruiser and the invertor is on the right side as you face
the back of the unit, it is located under the seat board supports, the
furnace is plugged into the invertor perm. because it is a 110'er, there is
another plug open in the outlet and I am told that I can run a regular TV
off that plug. Now will it run a micro? I don't know? Do you guys? On the
left storage compartment under the seat on the left as you face the back of

3. There is a minimal amount of gas put off by the batteries, you
will
need
to put a small two inch louver vent in the closet...they also make
battery
boxes with a vent tube installed in them.

If these directions were not very clear, let me know and I will try
to
be
clearer

I bought a 400 watt12 to 120 volt inverter today and put it in my
rig.
I
looked
like a pretty good one but it has a fan in it that makes an
anoying
noise.

Do they all make noise? Do they all have fans?

I need to install a second rv battery in my rig.

If I install it in the closet of my rig will it put off acid gases
while
charging?

Yo Benton, I mean to put the batteries in a container, I agree the converter
should be in a cabinet and nothing more than that -=dr=-

Regarding the covered container.....I would be careful not to put it in a
container, but a closet or something...The fans purpose is to keep the
electronics cool and in an enclosed container it will increase heat and
damage itself.......but a closet or even a cabinet would work...Some of
these have internal fans, they are quieter than the ones with external
motors

Mike - We have a power inverter and it buzzes when it is on. However I
do
not know if it has a fan or not? I suggest you keep the battery in a
proper
covered container and there shouldn't be any problem in my
pinion. -=dr=-

Benton, I like your idea of the two 6's, perhaps when I need to replace my
current deep-cell I will give this a try. What I don't understand fully is
why the two work better? I do a lot of fishing with guys with big rigs [for
on the water that is] and I have never heard of them using anything but
deep-cells. Now they are not running household items on these batteries -
just wondering -=dr=-

1. Yes they all have fans

2. If you are going to add a second battery I would recommend replacing
your
current one and installing two 6 volt golf cart batteries. You will have
to
cross connect the terminals to establish 12 volt's but you will get power
equal to three normal deep cycle batteries and the six volt take drainage
allot better...You can get these batteries for around $50.00 a
peace....this
is the only way to go.
