Re: It started - then, just won’t…

the pic of where the click comes from looks to be the battery isolator.? ? ?is the trans manual?? could be a clutch safety switch, or as stated? the starter solenoid is not getting a ground which is through the brushes. if they are worn, tapping with a hammer will sometimes shake the brushes into contact with the commutator and voila? ?starter works.? ?if this is the case you prob won't get another go at it.? time for a starter

Re: It started - then, just won’t…

Bright lights on the?dash mean you have good battery power. The click means your ignition switch (key) is getting through to the starter relay (where the click is likely coming from). Most likely, there's corrosion or something gunking up the starter solenoid. Temporarily, tapping lightly? on the starter while attempting to crankd tends to get it started. May have to try several times. Have your partner turn the key while you tap on the starter. Not too hard, or you can put a hole in the casing like I did. No biggie, though, because replacing the starter resolved the issue. This happened to me a couple months ago.

If you haven't already tried, jump the solenoid from one side to the other, it may need replacing. If that doesn't work, it may be the starter or a weak battery.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

They'll put them under each of the rear wheels as they are winching it up the ramp.?

The rear wheels will be on the ground, and as the front ones start to go up the ramp, the back of the rv will be getting closer and closer to the ground, so in order to try to keep it from scraping they will run the back tires up a four by four, (which is actually only 3-1/2" thick), so having more thickness to run the tires up will raise it higher might be handy if your rig overhangs the rear axel very far.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

It hasn't been mentioned when to put 4x4 in front of rear wheeles....
I imagine... as the RV is being pulled up the tilted bed of the tow truck.... they are placed just as the tail end of the RV is starting to come close to pavement.
?

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

pulling it on front first. put the 4x4s under the rear wheels to gain clearance in the back.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

I am not really grasping the full procedure with the 4x4s.? ?Are we still pulling the campers onto the tow truck backend first ?? ?So we are on the side of the road broke down and we pull four? long sticks of 4x4? off the roof?
and jack up the rear axle and place each 4x4 under each wheel ?? ? ? ? I have not been able to fully research the small roller wheels to be placed in the trailer hitch or connected under the rear bumper or chassis extension but the? dumpter? ?rollers looked promising at first glance.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

Andymon, your post reminded me of a time a few years back, that I was buying one of the two 21’ Sunraders I owned (rather briefly), and the guy who was selling it to me showed me a photo of that one on a flatbed getting ready to move it to a repair shop I think.?

Seems to me a lot has to do with which tow operator you get.?

My advice is to have a couple of 4x4’s (long enough to get all 4 of your rear tires on), and call for a flatbed and see what happens when he gets there. If that guy can’t do it, just call someone else. It’s not impossible.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

How do you use the 4x4s? to help prevent dragging and scraping when loading to a tow truck ?
?

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

Mine is 24' with a loooong tail, but I replaced the leaf springs 6 years ago and the rear is a bit higher than before. I could have sworn I had it flat bed towed several years ago and that I took a picture, but I can't find it.

Are all of you guys talking about the 21 or 22 ft rigs? My Sunrader Shorty gets onto a flat bed well enough with the help of the couple of 4X4’s the tow truck drivers like to carry with them, (to lift the back up so as not to scrape). Has anyone put one of the longer ones on a flatbed?? Maybe put it on ass end first, maybe with a couple of additional 4X4’s, doesn’t seem impossible.

Also, if you have to tow it, if I’m not mistaken it’s only the automatic transmissions you have to disconnect. Manuals should just be out of gear. Doug

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

My 1985 Rogue 22r with the good axle, manual transmission, and (heavy) siding like the kind used on 18 wheeler trailers, went on a diet last year and I ripped out the oven, roof AC, water heater, and 3-way fridge (which was broken in 3 ways). Weighed it after unloading post trip at the local scale... just under 6000 lbs.

Hello Scott ...? we have a 87 RV 22 feet, has some extra things added, loaded with water scaled around 6600 pounds, (22re) ... Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

On some of the very old Toyota RVs like mine you cannot unbolt the driveshaft due to the corrosion.? When I decided to unbolt mine, it took a few days with torches and solvents and different kinds of sockets and wrenches etc.? All I can say is definitely use ONLY? ?six point sockets and wrenches because I rounded off the corners of some nuts that had to be cut off.? ?It might be a good idea to pre-emtively? undo and redo
the joints in your driveshaft and other connections of your suspension.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

When mine was flat towed just 8 miles to the shop, the tow guy disconnected the drive line at the differential and tied it up. That's to protect the transmission he said.

Re: Weight of our campers for being towed ?

Your gross vehicle weight rating for an 85 would have been 5500lbs so that's your weight. Not our job to make sure manufacturers abided by the law
