Toyota Engine

Jack Redman

Hi Everybody,

Boy this has been my night for posting messages. OK, OK, I'll shut
up after this one....

Ebay has a really nice looking remanufactured 22RE engine up for
auction now (currently at $521). Very tempting.

Also, there is a Toyota motorhome up for auction on Ebay.

Re: Sunraider Price

Jack Redman

I paid a little less for my 86 Sunrader but it needed some work and cleaning. So I think the price is ok if it is equiped the way you want it.

$6,900 seems like it's in the right price range for an 1986 if it is
in great shape and has the 1 ton axle.

Well said Michael. And the same can be said for the soaring gasoline prices. There is no apparent reason (other than greed) for the prices to be escalating the way they are.

Transmission Cooler

Jack Redman

Hi Everybody,

Just an update on my camper. I just installed a transmission cooler
to hopefully extend the life of my automatic. The job was not too
bad, but work space was tight. The biggest problem was the cooler
outlet/inlet was larger than the Toyota lines, so I had to use
adapters to enlarge and reduce the size of the hoses. It works, but
is UGLY. So, a word of advice ... make sure to buy a transmission
cooler with the same size lines as what is on the Toyota.

Re: Timing chains 22 and 22re.

Jack Redman

Jack, this is good information on timing chains. Thanks.

I took my valve cover off and looked at my timing chain (1986
Sunrader - 22RE engine - 85,000 miles). The chain was tight on the
passenger side but had about 1/4 inch deflection on the driver's
side. So, I think I am ok for another 20,000 miles or so.

My engine makes a lot of funny sounds, the loudest one seems to be
coming from the EGR valve.... a clicking noise. I cannot hear any
bad noises coming from the timing chain itself.

Anyway, I will be sensitive to timing chain problems from now on.

Rear Brakes

Jack Redman

Hi Everybody, hope you are all well.

I finally got around to having my camper's rear brakes checked. I
watched very carefully how the mechanic disassembled the rear brake
area, and feel confident that I can do it next time. The good news
was that the brakes were in outstanding condition. The previous owner
must have replaced them shortly before I bought it. So, at 85,000
miles I know I can go a long time before they need anything.

The interesting thing (to me anyway) was that there are inner and
outer bearings on the rear drum that need to be hand packed. The
setup is much like the front drum on other vehicles. The big
difference is that the axle itself must be removed before the drum
can be taken off.

The other good news was that the mechanic in this little brake and
alignment shop only charged me $20 per side to inspect the brakes and
repack the bearings. Such a Deal!! I expected a lot more, so I gave
him a bonus.

Happy Camping All

Jack R.

new orleans

Tommy

Sorry to hear about your New Orleans experience. I was born there and
I know that crime is high..but I have always thought that the people
were always friendly.. More friendly then I have ever found here in
LA. Anyhow. The wind I think usually always pushes around high
profile vehicles like motorhomes and trucks. I know there is a
stabilizer shock on the front of the last Toyota based one I had. I
don't remember if the one I have right now has one or not. I know my
20 foot Dolphin I took on a trip and from San Francisco to Yosmite
the wind was hitting the side of us really bad. I had taken my mother
to Hurst Castle. Well.. I thought that the wind was really strong. I
was myself too scared to drive.. My mother said she would drive. it
was really scarey to me but not to her. so if there was ever a
possibllity to turn over because of the wind I thought that it would
have taken it that day. Anyhow. The stabilizer shock on the front
might help with atleast the steering pulling. I know on 4X4 vehicles
they most always have one on them. I hope you find some friendly
people to visit with while your there. If you get to go to the Garden
District you will see some nice old homes. I love the French Quarter.
My family mostly live in Biloxi Mississippi now. If you can go there
it is about 75 miles east of New Orleans and on the Gulf COast ..it
is really pretty.. Eat Some Bignet Donuts..and Drink Coffee with
Chickory..love it..bye.TOmmy

Re: New Orleans

Jack Redman

Hi Zia,

I am sorry your visit to New Orleans was so bad. I have not
thought what it would be like to park a camper in a city. I
parked mine in a bank parking lot recently, and it was not too
obtrusive.

I am concerned about the way your camper is pushed around by
the wind. I wish one of the club members could drive it to
compare it to their's. I have only had mine in a serious wind
once, and it kept me pretty busy. But mine has supplemental
air bags over the rear springs, and generally stays level on
the road. I still feel that 'push' when anything big passes
me.

I hope your trip home is more pleasant.

I think you may have something there Jack. When they chopped the frames to
lengthen them all engineering of the drive line may have been lost. That may
cause greater vibration on the drive train causing greater strain on the
carrier bearing and then auto trans failure. It seems we auto trans owners
need to be very on top of our drive train maintenance.

Yes the rear carrier bearing on the auto trans
was mentioned by Rosannah's Trans man.

Toyota Mhs are the only ones having any problems
with this trans. I am begining to wonder if the
problem is drive shaft whip? Perhaps caused by
wear of that center support bearing (I forget it's
proper name) or even not marking alignment when
replacing U-Joints.

What do you think?

Yep, they all take unleaded 86-87 octane gas. All
have the same Toyota chassis, 4cyl up to 87, then
both V-6 and 4cyl for 88 up.

Gas here in Ann Arbor Michigan, is the same price
as LA. $1.75 to $1.90. I expect $2 per gal by next
weekend.

Re: New Orleans

Hi Zia,
Sorry to hear of your miserable trip.
I found that a rear stabilizer bar installed on my 1983 Dolphin has helped,
but the large amount of air displaced by the coach will always catch the wind
and make it more of a challenge to drive, especially without power steering.
Hang in there!

Re: / gas cost on a trip

Im up here in Portland Oregon. Arco is still the cheapest gas, its $1.49.
I hated to here how much gas is in California ($1.80 to $1.90). I leave
next week for a trip. First to Los Angeles, than to Las Vegas. My 1984 21
or 22 foot Sunrader is getting 16 mpg around town (22r 4 speed 97,000
miles). I figure 1200 miles each way. Lets see total miles say.......2400
divided by 18 mpg on the highway average gas price $1.85 = $246.00.
still not to bad.Even when gas was $1.20 it would cost $159.00. The gas
company will be ripping me off $87.00!!!!!!!!!!!! on this trip.
Take care all,
Todd

Good tip on Oregon vrs Cal prices. But then everything
costs way more in California. Even 86 Sunraders :0)

Timing chains 22 and 22re.

Pre 1983 4cyl engines had double row timing
chains and are bullet proof. V-6s use belts.

83 up had single row chains. The 22re has
a single row chain with plastic chain guides.

At around 60k the chain begins to stretch and
rattle against the guides. This is what you
hear on start up. It is the begining of guide
failure. The more miles with chain rattle, the
more wear on the guides. Eventually, guide wears,
the chain sharpens and cuts away the timing cover,
dumping coolant into the oil pan.

As the guide fails, pieces will break off and drop
into the oil pan (good luck). (On rare occasions
it will get into the gears and cause catastrophic
engine failure (bad luck). The 20 thru 22re are
"interference" engines. A chain failure will cause
major engine damage. But It's the plastic guides
that go first.

Back to the rattle: It sounds kind of like a deisel
running , then disappears almost instantly on
start up as the oil flows and the chain tension is
taken up. The longer the rattle period, the worse
shape the chain is in (stretched). A good one (new)
will make no noise at all.

It can be hard to tell what you're hearing here, but
as the engine is an OHC type, there is no lifter
or push rod noise to be heard. That said, the engines
are old and clunkie OHC designs, and do make some noise.

The owners manual says replace at 60k? Drivers
of the 22-22re on other lists say 100k? A survey
of failures on the 4x4 list showed guide failure
at 100-150k.

The fix is extensive. The pan is loosened, the
head and timing cover, (and all their attached
goodies) must be removed to get at the chain and
guides. Some shops have changed them without
removing the head by "fishing" the new chain on,
however, oil leaks can occur using this method.

The parts that are usually replaced are: sprockets,
guides and chains. The guides are usually replaced
with all steel, after market parts such as those
sold by DOA.

This job can be done by a "do It your self" type
if they are good. Toyota quoted one list member
$1,300, and that's for plastic guides. I have not
checked shop prices.

You can check the guides and chain slack by
removing the valve cover and looking down the chain
cover with a flashlight. This would also make a good
pre-purchase check for your mechanic if you are doubt
when buying a used machine.

another tri[

Me and my friend Scotty just got back from a nice trip out to the
desert. We left Sunday morning and drove to Anzaberego. I had never
been there before. Alot of the cactus's were still in bloom..It
wasn't too hot yet..so it was just a nice all around trip there. We
spent the night there and drove on Monday morning to Julian. I had
never been there either.. A nice little town.. it is really a nice
time to be traveling. The wild flowers are blooming still all over
the road sides.. We drove from there to San Diego. Where we stayed
boon docking until Wednesday. It was a nice trip. Scotty took his
19ft Itasca, while I took my 21ft Rogue. It was the 2nd trip I have
taken with the Rogue. It had a virbration noise between 55 and 60.
While on the trip the rear tranny seal started to leak some. SO when
I got home I pulled out the drive shaft and found the Slip Yoke (the
part of the drive shaft that slides into the transmission) was worn
on one side. I went to North Hollywood Toyota and bought a new one.
THey told me that the reason it wore out is that the bushing in the
rear of the transmission needs to be replaced. I remember I think
Dale advising about the bushing wearing out and then wearing out the
whole transmission. Today I am pulling off the tailshaft of the
transmission and replacing the bushing, the seal, the yoke on the
driveshaft and 2 universal joints. I think the whole deal will cost
me less then $200.00. Mainly so cheap because I am doing all the work
myself. None of it has been hard, I think anyone could do it.
Otherwize I think the motorhome ran great. and got 16-17 mpg. which
to me is great for something of its size. I will let all know how it
turned out after I get it all back together. It is interesting and
sometimes frustrating going through a vehicle and repairing every
last thing that either has gone bad from sitting or from lack of
maintance. I Don't know if this is caused by anothing but that it is
really heavy and maybe something is poorly designed. but I love my
Toyota, don't get me wrong, but I don't think anything is perfect..
have a great day all..TOmmy
