Rear Brakes

Jack Redman

Hi Everybody, hope you are all well.

I finally got around to having my camper's rear brakes checked. I
watched very carefully how the mechanic disassembled the rear brake
area, and feel confident that I can do it next time. The good news
was that the brakes were in outstanding condition. The previous owner
must have replaced them shortly before I bought it. So, at 85,000
miles I know I can go a long time before they need anything.

The interesting thing (to me anyway) was that there are inner and
outer bearings on the rear drum that need to be hand packed. The
setup is much like the front drum on other vehicles. The big
difference is that the axle itself must be removed before the drum
can be taken off.

The other good news was that the mechanic in this little brake and
alignment shop only charged me $20 per side to inspect the brakes and
repack the bearings. Such a Deal!! I expected a lot more, so I gave
him a bonus.

Happy Camping All
