Re: my qualifying form to buy my Toyota RV

Michael Smith

Andrew,

I have to agree with the previous poster. If you want to get a good deal on a Toyota Rv watch RV Trader and all the newspaper want adds in the area you are willing to travel to and be prepared to move fast. I mean real fast. Have your money in hand for a deposit and answer the majority of that plethora of questions yourself. If I was selling an Rv and got that laundry list I would blow you off in a big hurry. Don't get me wrong they are good questions, but most should be asked durning the negotiating process and YOUR mechanics check.

Andrew's list and V-6 mis-info.

Andrew.

You forgot one item that states: "Please find
enclosed $200 for your trouble, and for the
cost of hiring a mechanic to "Certify" this
machine." :0)

IMO it would be a lot easier
for the seller to just sell to someone else.
If these rigs are priced right and in good
shape they sell fast...Especially this time
of year.

As for the V-6: I see the error I read in
another post is being repeated. It is, un-
fortunatly, not the gasket that warps, it
is the head that warps from being over heated
after the gasket has blown on the road.

If a V-6 engine has been taken in for new
gaskets on recall, and not because they failed
you could possibly get a good engine. But then
maybe not.

These engines are still giving problems, and
I am reading tale after tale of battles with
the dealers and Toyota over repairs. In many,
heads and even blocks, have had to be replaced
because they overheated when the gaskets
blew.

In some cases the bearings and cylinder walls
are wiped out when the coolant is dumped in to
the oil.

I suspect, as with a couple of auto trans on
our list, these bad engines will be patched up
and quickly sold. If you get one, Toyota may not
help you.

The only way to protect yourself, (if you must
have that mere 35 Hp over the 22Re) is to quiz
the seller on the head gaskets. If you discover
they blew on the road, do not buy the truck.
Thats all you can do short of paying for a pre-
sale engine tear down.

Good luck.

Hi Ronda,

Welcome to the group. I hope you get a Toyota based motorhome
because I think they are great. They are just perfect for
what you want to do with it.

It is hard to give you an opinion on the '79 Travette because so
much of it depends on the condition of the camper. However, I
will tell you that I think the price is too high for the year model.
I paid $5900 for an '86 that needed a few things done to it. The
general concensus is that the later model units, say from 1985
on, are the best ones to get because they have the fuel injected
engine in them.

You can get a good idea of the value of used Toyota campers by
going the the website www.rvtraderonline.com.

I do not want to discourage you from buying the Travette if it is
a really nice unit, and everything works like it should. The main
concern that we have with the older units is the rear axle. The
original axle was inadequate for the weight of the camper and
contents. Toyota made a recall on them to install a one-ton truck
axle in them to correct the problem. You should check to see if
the Travette has the updated rear axle. You do this by counting
the number of lug bolts on the rear axle. If it only has five then
the axle has not been changed. It will have six lug bolts if
the axle has been updated.

Good Luck. Feel free to ask any Toyota camper question that comes
up. Several of the members have been camping a long time, and have
mucho experience.

within a 300 miles radius of my home. There is a 1979 Toyota Travette
with 50,000 miles for sale in the local area. They want $5000 for
it.Seems to be in good condition. I need advice. Is this a good price?
Is this a good RV? What am I getting myself into? I am looking for help

Thanks so much.

1983 Toyota Rader

Hi. Anyone know anything about a "Rader". It has similar layout as a
"Sunrader", but the body is aluminum and not fiberglass. Have a chance to buy
one for about $5,000. with 43,000 miles on it.

Thanks for any help you can furnish on this model.

The Toyota chinooks I've seen are all small fiberglass bodies.
Chinooks are still around but now they are on Ford Chasis "Heavy

Group,
I was wondering if anyone has had to replace their exhuast recently. I
have a 21 ft Toyota camper that is ready for a new system from
catylitc converter back. Just curious where and how much it cost to
get repaired. I have rigged it enough, it's time to get a whole new
system.
Thanks,

Re: exhaust repair

Hi Nate,

We recently had an exhaust system put on our 21ft Granville. It was
about $320 for a new exhaust from the catalytic converter back & a new
gasket between the exhaust manifold and the head.

Mr. Muffler did the job about 2 weeks ago and I think I hear/feel a
leak on the exhaust port closest to the firewall so I am going to
bring it in next week for them to fix it....

I am interested if anybody thinks this is too much to pay.....

We originally went to Midas, but they wouldn't replace the gasket....

Good luck,

Owen & Amy

Were all the Chinooks light weight small pop-

Is Chinook still in business? Were they exempt

At 17ft this would make the chinook the Ideal

I do not know what vehicle it came out of [ i can find out ] ,but it had an
internal fuel pump. A welder I had found mounted it, attached to the left
side frame. the fill spout fills from the right side in a locked door[ it is
a long , so don't fill to the brim ] . He put a t in the overflow tube in
the original tank to pump the fuel into the orginal tank. he put a toggle
switch on the dash to activate the pume in the added tank. For the whole job
he charged me $400.00 You will have to look around for the tank and a
welder that likes to do new things. I hope this info helped
