summer 2000
This past summer was the first for me and my toyota and we traveled
alot. First big trip was to Cooperstown N.Y. in late July for Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekend. Great trip, stay about 10 miles out of Cooperstown at a KOA. The weekend was great, saw a ton of hall of fame ball players and the weather was great. Average about 18mpg on the trip which I was very pleased with considering mountains of upstate N.Y. Took the big trip in mid August from Ohio through the upper penn. of Michigan and across to Teddy Roosevelt N.P. in North Dakota. From there we traveled across Montana through Butte and Missoula, a little smokey though! Continued traveling west until we reached Seattle, we camped on the west side of Pugent Sound and took ferry across, Mt. Rainer was awesome. Headed south from there through Olympia N.P. and down Wash. and Oregan coast, first time I saw the pacific ocean. Dad and I took a quick and very chilly dip, temp in low 60's and us in street cloths. I had to be able to say I swam in the Pac. ocean. From there we started back east through Portland and followed the Columbia River with Mt. Hood in the distance. Next big stop was Yellowstone N.P. which was great as always. Camped in the Black Hills of South Dakota saw Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer S.P., third trip to this part of the country still one of my favorites. I think it would be second on my list of great places right behind Northwest Montana. From black hills traveled through badlands and Wall Drug. Last stop was the Field of Dreams in Iowa location of the movie. It was a great trip we covered over 6,000 miles. Only mechanical problem was had inside dually seperate didn't blow put shook me to death for a few hundred miles. Also lost passenger side vent window, stone I think. Drove in the worst storm of my life outside of Yankton S.D. got pretty wet driving from having a small window out and winds around 50 mph blowing. My mileage averaged around 19mpg. Funniest thing I saw was somebody pulling a camper down interstate with the sewer hoses flapping in the breeze. Nate |
Trip Reports
Hello group! I just want to encourage anybody who has taken a trip
recently in their beloved toyota to share it with the group. The report could cover where, when, recomended campgrounds or areas to see, mileage, and any other thing you might think the group might find interesting. I know it is the middle of winter so feel free to share stories of this past summers travels. I think the group could use some good day dreaming material. Thanks, Nate |
dingy
I think you could easily pull a toyota chinook behind you. I have
seen regular toyota trucks being pulled behind class A's. The chinook models would not come close to 5,000 pounds and the are sticks so you could just put it into nuetral. I hav never seen a big motorhome towing a mini before. You must be a serious camper! Nate |
Re: Digest Number 18
Re:Sunraiders. I can speak from experience having had three Toyotas, not any
a bad one, but by far, far and away, the Sunraider body is the best, never had any leak, don't think they can leak, a Toyota is a Toyota regardless of who builds on it. The axle thing was on a recall many years, a lot of people never bothered to take care of it at that time, I did, was free replacement, the biggest mistake I ever made was selling my last Sunder, was a V6 auto loaded. I now have a lecher which I enjoy very much, but do not trust, if I was in the market for a Toyota, no matter the time or distance, I would wait for a Sunraider. D. Clark |

Hi C. J.,
Well, I looked at the Itasca and it is not very good. It has several areas of damage, and the interior looks rather used. You can do a lot better. Jack _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at |

I am not aware of any toyota mini camper vans. Was the one you sawThanks for your reply Nate. Yes, it was a van with the snub front end (not a Previa). It was a well done conversion I saw, but don't know if it was a limited production factory camper, or an aftermarket job. Perhaps it was a one-off special. Will keep looking, or perhaps one of the other group members might have a reference. Does anyone have any insight as to whether some of the older toyota campers such as a Chinook, or Sunrader might lend itself toward being towed behind a Class A motorhome? Usually there is a 5,000 weight limit - but don't think that would come into play. Roger Freedman rnfreedman@... Austin, Texas |

I am also interested to know the watts draw, Iwand to buy a generator and need to know what size [ Its a small camper. To get the watts, multiply the volts x the amps. Thus for the Mach3 PS which draws 10.2 Amps at 115 volts you get 1173 Watts. For the Mach 3 Plus the draw would be 1713 etc. Note, however, that when the compressor kicks on and off, there will be a surge in the amount of power being drawn. I don't know that I would feel comfortable running an air conditioner on a generator under 2500 Watts and if you could get 3000 or 3500 in place, you would probably blow fewer fuses. Remember that your generator is running not just the air conditioner but also any appliances (trickle charger for the house battery, lights, hair dryers, electric coffee pot, microwave oven, toaster etc.) that may be on at the same time. An undersized generator can cause a lot of irritation as you go off to reset the circuit breakers one more time. Regards, Bob Hupp the Toyotaless and yes, I have had RVs before. |
air cond.
Sorry Bob all I can tell you is that I have a coleman model AC and it
can play freeze-out with you, plenty of cooling power. I do not have a generator so the only time I can use it is when I hit a campgrond with electric. I tend to run it when I don't need to sometimes to get my money's worth out of some campsites, usually private ones that seem a too high priced. Good Luck, Nate |

Re: Good price for a 91 Itasca???
C. J.
Hi Jack,
Funny, but the Itasca is located IN Huntington Beach! Here's the phone number if you'd like to give the guy a call and find out what you can...if he hasn't sold it yet. (714)960-1178 I don't know why, there just seems to be something strange about this guy or the vehicle. It's like he's trying TOO hard to sell it. He's replaced the back bumper and the front hood and had some painting done on the front where he replaced the hood. He said he bought it with alot of miles on it because he wanted to buy it cheaply so that he could then fix it up the way he wanted. He dropped alot of numbers to how much everything cost. I'm just not sure. I kinda wanted something under $5000 that was dependable. His asking price is $9500 but willing to take $9000. Again, I'm not sure, and maybe it's just my woman's intuition but there's an alarm going off. I would really appreciate it if you had the time to go take a looksie. Thanks, CJ --- Jack Redman <jack_redman@...> wrote: Hi CJ, That price is not all that unreasonable,_________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at ===== I don't want to be a make-believe person living in a pretend world. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? learning of the axle problems but today is a new day and I'm working happily on a fix. I learned a few things from the people who took over the building where many of the Sunrader units were made. They do RV repairs but don't have an available fix for the axle problems themselves. The guy I spoke with said there was a rear end shop in Southern California who was converting the non floating axle to a floating axle. I'm trying to track them down. He also told me that some of the coach makers had recommended running the inside tires with 5 to 7 more lbs of air than the outer tires. This so the inner tires would be carrying the greatest share of the load. PLEASE TAKE THE TIRE PRESSURE ADVICE AS HEARD IF FROM A GUY WHO HEARD IT FROM A GUY WHO DOES RV REPAIR. I have no idea if this is a good idea or not. I called a few auto wreckers.....woops.....the prefer to be called dismantles now. I found one who had the axles and hubs but no pumpkin. I guess he was talking about the differential itself. Does anyone know if the axles would possible go onto my differential? They were only $200 for axles and hubs. Re: Hello Group!
edfam
Hello Howard,
I got the Owner's Manual out of the glove box, but it is so generic that it doesn't have much of anything..only 10 small pages with no specifics for anything. It does have a phone number on the back for manufacturer's warranty work, so if your unit is a "Duo-Therm" it lists 213-962-3768, perhaps you could try that number and ask them directly.Hope that helps. edfam --- In toyota-campers@..., "Walker1, Howard" <howard.walker1@h...> wrote: I just read yopur e-mail and found that we have similar campers. .Mine is an 84 Dolphin every thing works but I have no manuals for the box.{ If you have I would love to get a copy } The engine is probably a 22r [very reliable ] Mine has 87 thousand and jhust purrs.roof Air conditioner in my 20 foot box.may notcontain confidential and privileged information. Subject: [toyota-campers] Re: Sunraider and other fiberglass shelled rv's Hi - Thanks much for a very informative discussion group! I recently sold my old 20' dodge 360 gas guzzler (8.5 mpg average on trip) and have been looking for a 1988 and newer fuel efficient rv with a manual tranny. My Class C Dodge Komfort also developed an unstoppable roof leak after loading 2 kayaks up there for a little boating fun in Muleghe - Baha Mex. I have a friend who wants to sell his '84 toyota "New World". I believe it has a fiberglass body with excellent interior height but with his auto tranny he is only averaging 12 mpg which is quite a bit less then the 15 to 18 average I read about here. If anyone has any leads on a unit that is is good condition, I am most interested. I am looking only for the units with the heavier rear axial. The few toyotas I saw under $6000 were older units with the "guaranteed to fail when least expected" wimpy rear bearings/axial. Another friend loves his 1988 Dolphin with a 4 banger 22R engine and manual however I wonder how durable that body is compared to the fiberglass ones? Has anyone had problems with roof leakage or structural integrity? My first rv was a '74 fiberglass body dodge class B Xplorer 224 (factory van conversion) with a 360 engine. It averaged about 13 mpg on a trip. That unit was built like a tank, never leaked and it could easily cruise up mountains at 60 mph. I'll have some "adjustments" to make in my driving with a 4 banger but the gas prices are "encouraging" me and many other folks to downsize into more fuel efficient units. Finally (sorry to be so long winded) is there much performance improvement in toyota's 6 cyl engine compared to the 22R 4 cyl ? What about fuel efficiency? I've heard some rumors that the 6's are not as reliable and had to be recalled. Your comments are most appreciated!
