What to do when a selftest fails
200
If one or more of the self test of the tinySA fails AND you did NOT buy from one of the safe sellers (see wiki) you can do the following: If the Attenuator test (test 12 in the latest FW) fails follow this guide in the wiki: https://tinysa.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.CheckTheAttenuator If the serial number at the back of your tinySA starts with "AD" you have a clone. Complain and get a refund. If the text next to the high input connector is "HICH" you have a clone. Complain and get a refund. For other failures make a photo of the front and back of the tinySA and a photo or screen capture of the failing self test such that it is possible to read the text on the screen and post a message with the pictures. ------------------------------------------ For more info on the tinySA go to https://tinysa.org/wiki/

TinySA Ultra Sig-gen output level
Hi Yesterday I tried using the sig gen function of my TinySA Ultra. I notice that the output level is not -18.5 dBm but instead it is around -50 dBm. I tried the various setting options but all to no avail. Perhaps I am making a mistake somewhere. The spec analyser function is working very well. However, I have not done any calibration yet. Any comments & advice are most welcome. Dieter VK3FFB

Auto Save Issues
10
I want to take continuous trace data every 500 ms. I go to level -> trigger -> and turn on auto save and set the interval to 500 ms. I believe this should give me what I want. However I do NOT get a new save every 500 ms. I get a new save about every 30 seconds. Why is this? What settings should I change? Thanks,

Signal level incorrect, defective LNA?
3
The level calibration of my tinysa ultra fails with "Signal level incorrect". The device was ordered from an authorized vendor. HW firmware is v0.4.5.1 and SW firmware is 1.4-199. The device was reset before testing, and two different SMA cables were used. I checked the CAL output with another spectrum analyzer and the level and frequency looks fine. When generating a sine wave with another device, and changing the output level, the tinySA shows the correct level with different attenuator values, so to me the attenuator looks good too. Running the selfest, Test #14 fails with "Signal level Fail": This is after running level calibration and selfest: --- leveloffset low -0.0 leveloffset low_output 0.0 leveloffset switch 0.0 leveloffset receive_switch 0.0 leveloffset out_switch 0.0 leveloffset lna 0.0 leveloffset harmonic 0.0 leveloffset harmonic_lna 0.0 leveloffset shift 0.0 leveloffset shift1 -2.7 leveloffset shift2 -2.7 leveloffset shift3 0.8 leveloffset shift4 -0.2 leveloffset drive1 0.0 leveloffset drive2 -1.7 leveloffset drive3 -1.3 leveloffset direct 0.0 leveloffset direct_lna 0.0 leveloffset ultra 0.0 leveloffset ultra_lna 0.0 leveloffset adf 0.0 leveloffset direct_output 0.0 --- correction low 0 10000 12.2 correction low 1 50000 7.6 correction low 2 200000 4.5 correction low 3 400000 2.2 correction low 4 900000 0.4 correction low 5 20000000 -0.4 correction low 6 30000000 0.0 correction low 7 100000000 -0.8 correction low 8 160000000 -0.4 correction low 9 230000000 0.5 correction low 10 290000000 0.3 correction low 11 400000000 1.0 correction low 12 520000000 0.1 correction low 13 600000000 0.5 correction low 14 660000000 0.4 correction low 15 740000000 1.5 correction low 16 790000000 3.0 correction low 17 810000000 4.7 correction low 18 820000000 6.3 correction low 19 830000000 8.7 --- Does this look like a defective LNA? If yes, is for U14 the part BGA2817 the correct one? Would be great if someone can confirm. Thanks Kevin

Black Screen after Update still able to connect
3
Hi All Hopefully someone can help aim me in the right direction. I updated my ultra with the latest code using STMCube. It appeared to update correctly but after rebooting I am no longer getting any display. I tried one suggestion of erasing then reflashing along with verification but no difference. The date on my unit shows Feb 24 mfr date and was supposed to have come from Zeetex(?) . Was there a hardware update or change so I need a different bin? Does this prove it was a fake clone? Any suggestions? Dave

Typed 0000 in the 'internals' menu and now the tinySA ultra freezes immediately after boot
10
backstory: was trying to unlock a new tinySA ultra to go above 800mhz. I forgot the menu location and code but figured i'd give it a try. found 'expert config -> internals' menu and typed in 0000 as a guess. after that the unit was frozen. power cycle, system boots then immediately freezes. if i hold the slider left or right while booting, the unit will scroll frequencies until the slider is released then immediately freezes. I have tried to no avail: flashing new and old firmwares. reset via tinysa app (windows) open and unplug battery then retry. any ideas? thanks

Verification by serial number?
6
Hi I just purchased my TinySA Ultra after running across it but after reading a bit I am now paranoid as to its authenticity. I saw and understand the designer posting that he didn't want to give away how to tell the difference. Mine came in a nice TinySA black box and the unit itself looked like nice quality along with all the components that were included. Being new to this I wonder if the authenticity can be done by the serial number thru a PM so not to deseminate the information?. I did look to see if this had been asked and answered.... Thanks! Dave

Bug report: Multiband name does not stored in bnd file.
3
Hello. I've opened issue#136 on https://github.com/erikkaashoek/tinySA/issues Not sure if github is in use. Here is a copy: I created multiband config for all 8 slots and named each slot. after saving BANDS->SD, i have found, what xxx.bnd file does not have any names inside. Of course, loading bnd file back confirm this issue. All slots named as tx1,rx1,tx2,rx2, etc. Please fix this issue and store band name in "bnd" file. Thanks! P.S. #tinysa #ultra Leveling TinySA Ultra with damaged LNA

I damaged my LNA, and now can't finish leveling process. Is there any way to bypass LNA-related stuff, while i am waiting for IC's to arrive? Maybe desoldering it and bypassing would be benificial?

How to apply frequency-dependent Antenna Factor
15
Good day, I would like to know whether I can apply the Antenna Factor (AF) for my calibrated biconical antenna to measurements being made by the TinySA Ultra. Antenna theory refresher: The AF is a value that lets you go from measured intensity to actual E-field intensity. It is critical when doing compliance testing of radiated emissions. If the AF was just a single value I could apply it to the TinySA settings as a pretend attenuator between the antenna and the TinySA. But the AF of my antenna is highly frequency-dependent, varying by over 20dB over my frequency range of interest.

Manual fault finding

I've added a page to the wiki describing some steps for manual fault finding. Could some of the users that have (had) problems with their HW have a look at this page and check if it helps them locating the probable faulty component(s) https://tinysa.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=TinySA4.FaultFinding -- Designer of the tinySA For more info go to https://tinysa.org/wiki

TinySA Ultra doesn't go to menu pressing jog
2
I updated firmware to latest release today and everything was fine. I was in config menu and I connected with the supplied cable RF and CAL connectors, to perform a selftest. As soon as I did it the yellow trace disappeared and pressing the jog is doing nothing: no menu on the right I am able to put system in DFU and tried to program again formware 3-4 times. Everything seems ok but as soon as I switch on TinySA Ultra as usual, non measure line is displayed and pressing or sliding jog does nothing. I opened the case and plugged off the battery but no way. Any other suggestion? Many thanks, Maurizio I2NOY

AliExpress
20
Hi to the group ! Is the vendor "ToolTop" on AliExpress a good source for the TinySA? They show more than 900 sold with more than 200 mostly positive reviews and state that it is genuine. The price is just over $43.00 USD with free shipping. Jim WB4ILP

Tiny SA Ultra - Has my unit frozen for the last time?
11
Hi I hope someone can help. Previously, my Tiny SA Ultra has locked itself up a couple of times during simple interaction with the menu. Whenever this happens, if I start it up, it freezes on a display at 349.2MHz (image attached). The first time this happened, the power disconnection method from inside the unit resolved the problem. On the second time this didn't work but starting it up without the SD card inserted did. On this third occasion, neither method has worked. Even leaving the battery disconnected for > 10 mins. Just before the 3rd occasion, I had performed a firmware update to v1.4-177. The update worked fine using the TinySA-App and it passed a self-test. It wouldn¡¯t loaded my previous settings so I was manually re-entering my presets. During this it locked up for the third time. I can still put it into DFU mode and apply different firmware via the app but the same frozen screen happens everytime I start it up. I noticed another owner describe a similar problem online where if they hold the jog wheel to the left or right as it starts up, you can still briefly change the frequency from 349.2MHz. However, that¡¯s it. It is a legitimate TinySA Ultra purchased in Feb 2024 from a supplier listed by tinesa.org. Ultra mode had been enabled. Calibration checked. - s/n: SU-24014581 - h/w version: V0.4.5.1.1 Any help would be appreciated. Regards Tristan

My tinySA has 10MHz internal interference
18
Hi everyone, I have used my tinySA basic version for several years and it has passed the self-calibration. When I set the 10MHz test and connected nothing, it would appear in the spectrum. I have also ruled out the interference from my environment. Is this an internal circuit problem?

zero span unit conversion error?
3
setup: zero span , unit as dBmV. Now when I set a trigger level the correct level is shown on the left side of the display. But the trigger menu shows the value in dBm (appr dBmV minus 47), although the unit is shown as dBmV. Is this a bug? regards, Henk

Operating Close to 7.3G and some NOOB RF/SpecAn Questions
10
Thanks to Erik and All devs for a wonderful device, also thanks to Ian for his great python work (the app) Just wondering about expected behavior of the 407 when working close to 7.3g, I'm doing some environmental monitoring of Video Links 7.1, 7.285, There seems to be random noise from the 7.3g mark onwards, is it case where the unit can only be used in Ultra under 7.3 and then must recalibrated to Harmonic Mode 7.3 and above ? there arent any option for a cross over range are there ? Second question (RF/SpecAn), I have been learning about the DANL change that occurs when changing the RBW my question, should power level dbm remain consistent when changing RBW, is it only the accuracy & DANL ? Thanks Ash
