Sticky What to do when a selftest fails 206
If one or more of the self test of the tinySA fails AND you did NOT buy from one of the safe sellers (see wiki) you can do the following: If the Attenuator test (test 12 in the latest FW) fails follow this guide in the wiki: https://tinysa.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Main.CheckTheAttenuator If the serial number at the back of your tinySA starts with "AD" you have a clone. Complain and get a refund. If the text next to the high input connector is "HICH" you have a clone. Complain and get a refund. For other failures make a photo of the front and back of the tinySA and a photo or screen capture of the failing self test such that it is possible to read the text on the screen and post a message with the pictures. ------------------------------------------ For more info on the tinySA go to https://tinysa.org/wiki/

Recommended Test leads and set-up 3
Hi, Completely new to this group, but I have owned a TinySA Ultra for a few months now (mainly using it for calibration of S meters) and I am really impressed at the functions and features of this device. When it comes to conducting any sort of "Alignment", I am a complete novice. Hence, the questions below are pretty elementary to many of you. I wanted to ask for any recommendations for test leads and other things I need, to carry out the following type measurements/alignment. I don't care if the leads cost serious money (like those from Pasternak). Erik who has designed this device also has suggested a "DC blocker" and obviously I need a mechanical "adaptor" to convert from SMA to BCN for instance. What else do I need? I will check out any YouTube videos that are out there for carrying out alignments such as these. Alignment of a 100% solid-state ham radio receiver which goes back more than 50 years. In my case, I need to do an "alignment" of a Lafayette HA-800B receiver. The Installation and Operating Manual provides fairly detailed instructions on this. Next up for alignment is a 100% tube Receiver by TRIO-Kenwood (9R-59DS). In more detail: * IF (1st at 2.608MHz and 2nd at 455 kHz) ** 2nd IF at 455kHz at 30% AM modulation depth at 1,000Hz) and 1st IF, injecting an unmodulated (I believe) signal at 2.608MHz connecting the test leads between the chassis and the Gate of a FET ("FET-2") * 1st oscillator (different ham radio bands, not including WARC) - It doesn't say which level the signal needs to be though and I believe that an unmodulated sinusoidal wave is sufficient? * ANT and RF coils (here, too, no information is provided about the signal that I need to inject so, I am assuming a sinusoidal wave would suffice?) * S meter (100uV level unmodulated signal at 14.0MHz) * 1st IF Trap Coil (at 2.608MHz, AM modulated at 1,000Hz at 30% depth) Any guidance/suggestion or recommendations would be highly appreciated on all of the above!! -- Juha Jussila

TinySA Ultra+ test failure (Test 14: fail) 3
Dear all, I have just bought my Tiny SA Ultra+ and tested it for a few days. Everything was ok. Both Self-Test and calibration were ok. Then, I updated the firmware and ... both tests fail. I was using the same cable and tried another cable as well. Results are the same. I was also trying to install the old firmware but nothing changes. Below are the pictures. What seems to be the problem? Did I burn it out? Maybe LNA?

True frequency band upper limit detection level of TinySA Ultra ZS-407 and corresponding signal dropoff 27
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone could offer some insights about the true upper limits of the frequency bands that the TinySA Ultra ZS-407 can detect. And what the corresponding signal drop-offs are at each 1 GHz interval above 7.3ghz? I watched a video which showed the below signal drop-offs on the ZS-406 when detecting a signal generator emitting a 1 dbm signal. Since the ZS-406 is only rated up to 5.4 GHz, does that mean the ZS-407 takes another 2 GHz to start seeing similar drop offs since it's rated up to 7.3 GHz? I.E. 9 GHz would be -5.5dbm, 10 GHz would be -17dbm, 11 GHz would be -27.5dbm? I'm trying to make sense of some alarming signals I've been detecting from a nearby cell phone tower. I detected a 10.092ghz 4.6dbm peak signal on my back patio which is 0.78 miles / 1.28 km from the cell phone tower. Based on the signal drop off of the TinySA Ultra ZS-407, I'm guessing that may be underreporting the signal by about 17 dbm? So the real signal is more like 21.6dbm? Under the tower itself I've detected steady signals of 19.3 to 22.3 dbm at 10.7777ghz. So those may actually be closer to 40 or 50dbm? Any help is appreciated, thanks. Adam https://youtu.be/ypqJMcVC-z8?si=8k55XFsBYeXlYm8V Interpreting Those Drop-Offs (ZS-406): Signal Generator Output Actual Frequency Detected by TinySA +1 dBm 7 GHz -5.5 dBm +1 dBm 8 GHz -17 dBm +1 dBm 9 GHz -27.5 dBm +1 dBm 10 GHz -38.5 dBm +1 dBm 11 GHz -57.5 dBm

Does it seem to anyone else that some of the new members to this Group are bots?? I¡¯ve noticed in the NanoVNA groups too. Tiny SA battery 2
Hello, My old original tiny sa battery has swollen to 3 times its normal thickness. Where can I buy an exact replacement. I see it has a small circuit board inside the battery so I am guessing it has to be exact replacement battery. Thank you Ken

TinySA Ultra 50 Khz as a signal generator 65
Hello, Last year I purchased a TinySA Ultra in order to make some alignments in my old HF receivers, a pair of Drake SPR-4. To say the truth I purchased the Tiny because it goes down to 50 Khz and finding a signal generator that covers from 10/ 50Khz is quite difficult and expensive. I have problemms in making the alignment and I do not know if is the generator or some other part. Starting the alignment with the IF 50Khz BFO is quite easy, first coil can zero beat the note but the following coils there is no movement either in voltmeter or S-meter. I have tried with passive and active probes because I suppose that is a high impedance circuit. Maybe am I doing something wrong with the generator? Is the input typed wright, as the attached photo shows? This is the manual: page 23 https://www.wb4hfn.com/DRAKE/DrakeManuals/PDFDOCS/SPR-4_Manual.pdf

Best settings for impulsive wide-band 6m RFI hunting 5
Hi. What are the best setting to quickly hunt an impulsive wide-band noise in 6m band? My current settings in my TinySA Ultra: -FREQUENCY: 49 - 55 MHz (a little more of the detected noise) -SWEEP POINTS: 290 point -SWEEP ACCURACY: FAST -WSPEEDUP: 2 -CONFIG - SPUR REMOVAL: OFF I have the following problems: 1) I'd need a faster scan in order to locate the noise source with my portable loop. 2) when I use the command STORAGE - SAVE CAPTURE, I hardly can capture well the yellow impulsive noise, as it changes very quickly . This was a very lucky shot. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Many thanks

NOISE GENERATOR for the HOME BREWERS 6
The best ever ham radio publication, Ham Radio, once published a relatively simple project: a "Gated Noise Source". I built and extensively used one from MF, HF, VHF, UHF, and through 1296. Search the Ham Radio archives and you'll locate it. If you don't want the "gating" function, its even simpler. HINT: Low voltage Zeners biassed just as the break into conduction produce the most noise. You can select them using an o'scope of sufficient BW. Or, better yet, your TinySA! Be sure to decouple the bias from the SA. Dave - W?LEV

Wideband spurious signal? 6
Hello, i'm investigating the upper frequency ranges of the tiny SA ZS-407 and i've found three very strong wideband signal around 8.56 GHz that i find odd and i'm not quite sure they are really there. When spur removal is on or auto, the signal is attenuated as seen here: If i disable the spur removal, the signal is much stronger: There is some static signal in the waterfall seen (left to the center), that i think is now a spurious signal. Reducing the RBW keeps the signal, but still shows the spur signal: Any insights on whether this is an artifact or a real external signal would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Kevin

USB connection to TinySA fails using QtTinySA on Pi 2
I'm trying to use a Pi 4B to view/control TinySA. I've sucessfully installed QtTinySA on a clean image and it works just fine with a TinySA Ultra+ I've had a TinySA in my bag as a "don't leave home without it" device for a few years and tried connecting it instead of the Ultra. I can see it if I run lsusb so there is a connection, but it is not recognised by QtTinySA It does connect to a Win PC and i have updated it to 1.4.175 I've reread the QtTinySA Wiki and I can't see any reference that it only supports Ultra. Am I missing something obvious? I'm keen to see if I can develop into a remote access Spectrum Monitoring device. We have a fleet of them based on other hardware. Any help appreciated. Cheers Peter

PC Control of Sweep Accuracy Features
I am using Tinysa over USB to Ethernet solutions, and QTTinySA I was wondering if TinySA could allow the Sweep Accuracy Features to be changed via PC control, currently I am loading a profile before the device is used in a remote mode, but would love to be able to change these remotely. - Normal/Precise/Fast/Noise (Selection Box) - NSpeedup - WSpeedup

No pulse on CAL when freq sweeping on signal generator 7 #tinysa #ultra
Hi, I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or my TinySA is misbehaving. I want to use TinySA Ultra to align IF transformers by visualising the freq attenuation (bode plot) on an oscilloscope. https://youtu.be/QQQOZm3uhZk However, the TinySA Ultra does not seem to output the sweep pulse on Cal output. I did checked the Pulse High option. Below are pictures with scope output and TinySA settings. Can anyone give me a clue?

Turn off display 11
Hi, Is there a way in current FW to disable the screen (until for example user touches the screen)? I had a quick search in github and from group messages but could not find the answer. For context: I'm using TinySA in "headless mode" by controlling it via serial and was wondering if I could save some precious mAh by turning off the screen. All the best, Stas
