Sticky What to do when a selftest fails
Hi Hugen,
? Thank you for responding my posts.
?
Those aren't great news at all.
?
I went through the forum, and we made a short test.
Connected SMA cable between High/CAL and Low/RF connected
Enabled CAL 30Mhz? in the mode menu.
Set scan frequency to 0 - 200Mhz
We saw 30Mhz signal at -35,6dBm with 30Mhz harmonics with LNA off? (for people searching LNA = Low Noise Amplifier)
Enabled LNA we saw nothing, just noise floor.
?
This indeed indicates that you are right about the blown switch or the LNA.
?
Is it possible to distinguish between damaged LNA and switch somehow?? Is there any recommended way how to measure it using standard tools like multi-meter and without excessive risk for the device? (from what I am reading on this forum, this type of devices are very sensitive )
?
Could there be anything else damaged? Like the protection diode,? the capacitor or the attenuator?
?
?
It's quite confusing. Could it be me who damaged it just by some? ESD event? Or it's more probable that it was somehow damaged before I touched it?
?
Thank you
Lukas

Hello,
? here you are the photos of tests. In my previous post I incorrectly mentioned tests 10,12 and 14. It were tests 10,13 and 14 as it's seen in the photos. I also tried a calibration with the supplied cable (i tried both supplied cables) connected between high/cal and low/rf connector, but it failed.
The firmware used is the latest:? tinySA4_v1.4-189-g22a61bd

Let me please know if you need anything else.
?
Thank you very much!

Hi,
?I am writing on behalf of my dad, who bought TInySA Ultra in Eleshop NL. He's never done any self-test or a firmware upgrade of the device. He got a recommendation by his friend to do firmware upgrades from time to time to fix bugs and get new features.?
He asked me to do a firmware upgrade for him. So I went through all the instructions which recommend to do a self-test first, but during the self-test there is an error in test 12.
So I upgraded firmware anyway, because I noticed some self-test changes in the change log. The upgrade was successful, but there are still errors in the test 10 (critical level), 12 and 14. Could you please help us to find out what's wrong??
?
Here you are the photos of the device.

?
Thank you very much

Measure the call output with LNA on and LNA off
It should be around -35dBm
If the level is about correct with LNA on then you probably blown the attenuator
If the level with LNA on is as bad as with LNA off you may have blown either the input switch or a lot more

Hi Erik, Sure will do thanks for taking the time to look into this issue. Regards Simon On Mon, 16 Sept 2024 at 20:25, Erik Kaashoek via <erik=[email protected]> wrote:

Blown switch or LNA are very rare compared to total tinySA being sold.
But if zelftest succeeded before upgrade and failed after upgrade it may be something else
Can you contact Eleshop for sending the faulty device back to them so I can investigate what is happening?
Tell them I requested you to send back

Hi Erik, Yes the calibration (and self test) actually worked fine prior to FW upgrade. The only reason I actually upgraded the firmware was that a colleague had also the same issue after upgrading and I wanted to check. So in order to try and help him, I upgraded the firmware to same version he had. This is when the issues started. Downgrading firmware has no effect and the problem remains.. If it's a blown switch and LNA are these user replaceable parts, and how likely is it to happen again ? Are parts available in NL and what are part numbers ? I have actually recommended all our field engineers get a tinySA ultra and if it's a common problem, then I may need a lot of spare parts ;) Regards Simon |
Can you do a manual calibration??
Input a known level (CAL output should be OK) and use
CONFIG/MORE/LEVEL CORRECTION/INPUT LEVEL to set the actual input level
If this works and you now get the right level can you retry the calibration?
It seems there is something wrong with the LNA anyway.

Erik, Please find photos attached.. ch> selftest 0 3 ch> selftest 0 4 ch> selftest 0 4 ch> selftest 0 10 ch> selftest 0 11 I checked with sig gen and oscilloscope for measured value and the value appears to be fairly close to scope value. The 30mhz calibration waveform also appear to be correct. The Signal generator was very weak output and not as selected on screen adusting the offsetvalue of output seemed to bring it up to expected value but it was still unable to perform either test with success. Have also tested with known good cables. Have downgraded firmware also same issue.. Hope this makes sense.. SImon ![]()

Before calibration restart the device with jog button pressed to the side?
After this the level indicators should be red as the calibration is removed and all settings are factory defaults
Then try again the calibration
If this fails post a picture of all failing selftests using the usb command
selftest 0 x
where x is one of the failing tests

elecshop is NOT?on the vendor approved list in the WiKi. So despite what the vendor said, it might not be true. I have been told by a few vendors that said their TinySAs were original, so I purchased one and it was a knock-off. So, if a vendor is not on the approval list in the WiKi, you are probably not going to get an original. Just saying. CLYDE KC7BJE? Hi, I have just had the same issue on 2 devices (tinySA Ultra) after updating the firmware to the latest version. Both units now fail self test and re-calibration; previous to the update they both worked fine. 1 unit I have confirmed by supplier (elecshop) to be an official device. Would really appreciate to determine if this is a hardware fault or can be fixed. Attenuation test passes as per wiki advise. self test 3,4,7,10,11 level critical and test 14 fails signal level Level calibration fails on test 7 directly. Any assistance welcome Regards Simon pa2sq |
