TinySA Ultra and TinySA App

The tinySA is hanging for some reason after the vbat command
I will have to find out why

Can you guys connect tinySA-App,
open the VNA comms window (click on the USB symbol) and click on "un-paused" so the text becomes "paused" and try if continuous sweep will still hang?

Erik,

The display froze after about 7 minutes and it disconnected shortly thereafter.

In my case with TinySA-APP connected to the TinySA (now with firmware V1.3-513), and on continuous sweep, ?when the USB Comms is paused the TinySA-APP screen is frozen and the TinySA screen is ‘live’

?

After 20 minutes the TinySA screen is still active, and TinySA-APP connected, whenever I change to Un-Paused the APP runs OK.

?

My guess is that maybe this isn’t the test condition you were expecting ?

Please ignore this request, when paused the sweep can not run, stupid me.

In my case, after I paused the Comms window, I closed it, assuming that it would stay paused...the App then ran for about 7 minutes before the freeze....maybe I am the 'stupid" one!

Once paused, and window closed, it looks like it goes back to un-paused

?

When the comms window is opened again it resumes to paused

I have just run another test and it lasted around 30 minutes before the ‘disconnect’

?

tx: vbat

rx : link timeout .. disconnecting

?

A slightly different end (no rx: vbat)

Erik,
? ?I don't know if it helps, but I do not get a serial disconnect when continuously running (>1hr + switching focus) the "tiny Spectrum Analyzer" application with my tinySA Ultra.

? This seems to indicate that the problem is related to a buffer overrun problem in tinySA-App as you first suggested. Since tinySA-App was modified from an application originally written by another programmer, tracing the serial comms logic may take a bit of detective work from you.

? The "tiny Spectrum Analyzer" application might be a workable solution for users who want to use their pc to perform a continuous scan using tinySA Ultra until the issue with tinySA-App is solved.? The "tiny Spectrum Analyzer" application was written by you before the tinySA Ultra was a gleam in your eye and doesn't accept center frequency entries above 1GHz.

Erik & Herb,

That's the proof - the tinySA.exe does not query the battery status, does not use the 'vbat' command!

From time to time, in the TinySA-App comms window, maybe every 4 or 5 minutes, there seems to be slight blip in the way that the window is updated, normally new lines appear at the bottom, but occasionally most of the window is cleared, new lines appear after the few lines left at the top of the screen, and then once the new lines fill the screen it begins scrolling up again, new lines inserted at the bottom of the window

?

Just mentioning it as I am not sure if it is a sign of there being some form of a processing speed related issue, maybe related to vbat

?

However, once the problem occurs it seems that the TinySA is the party that has suffered, it has to be restarted, ?the TinySA-App doesn’t need a reboot, it is ready to carry on as soon as the TinySA is reconnected.

My Ultra disconnects after 4 or 5 minutes: ‘RC link timeout .. disconnecting’. (1000 pts/scan & Win 10).

Erik,
? If no quick fix is forth coming for the receive timeout issue, how about updating the "tiny Spectrum Analyzer" application as a temporary solution for those user's that require a long-term PC connection?

? Looks like it would primarily require expanding the application frequency limits, making the LO selectable (tinySA or tinySA Ultra), and making the zero-offset selectable (-128/-174).

? I've run Python automation scripts connected to the tinySA Ultra for hours without interruption, so the timeout issue is related to tinySA-App.

Herb, unfortunately it's related to the firmware of the tinySA & Ultra.
The vbat command of the tinySA sometimes times out and therefore tinySA-App hangs.

Please let us know, what Python script you are usings and a link to try.

The TinySA app, with repeated scan off, makes a routine call to the TinySA for information (every 4 or 5 seconds) this includes the vbat data. I ran this for over one hour without any sign of failure. So I think the fault is not just vbat, but depends on other circumstances, maybe when the TinySA is very busy scanning and servicing comms there is an occasional glitch around the time of servicing the vbat routine

Wolfgang,
? ?Erik has provided a Python library at:???.??
The long running scripts I mentioned were written by Erik during beta testing to characterize the operation of the tinySA Ultra.? Erik may selectively release some of the more useful scripts in the future.

? The tinySA Ultra can also be controlled from NanoVNA-APP v1.1.209 and I received a serial timeout within an hour of run-time. So, the timeout issue was already present before Erik modified the application for the tinySA.??
