Tune a duplexer #features #file-notice

Can you use the TinySA Ultra to tune a duplexer?

With only a tinySA you can not tune a duplexer as you also need a source.
With two tinySA you can tune a duplexer but the tuning process will be slow
Best would be to use VNA

For more info on the tinySA go to https://tinysa.org/wiki/

I'd like to make a general suggestion to anyone on this group and the NANOVNA group:? Dig just a "bit" and learn the differences between a Spectrum Analyzer and a Vector Network Analyzer.? It isn't subtle and won't take much homework.

Hi Anthony

You may need to use both a VNA and a TinySA ULTRA as the dynamic range of the VNA might not be adequate for tuning the deep notches pending how many sections your duplex filter has and what the specification are.

The VNA quickly let you adjust the duplex filter and by using an external source e.g. as Erik suggest another TinySA. Then use the TinySA Ultra to finetune the deep notches, watch out for the level by the external source as the attenuation of the duplex filter outside the deep notches are minimal so keep it inside the safe linear range of the TinySA

The TinySA Ultra has a LNA which extend the dynamic range by 20dB and when using narrow RBW you actually increase the dynamic range further

Kind regards

Kurt

i've done it with a TinyVNA and written it up over a year ago . My comments are all over at [email protected]?

including how I overcame the 70dB dynamic range using an inexpensive 23dB wide band amp.

I have both the TinySA and a TinySA Ultra and that 23dB preamp. I see no problems tuning duplexers.

However many individuals state those Chinese $120+/- duplexers leave much t be desired. I have done Sinclair, Cellwave and WACO ,

With SA you measure signals
With VNA you measure circuits.

And then there was a tracking generator.

Tracking generators coupled to an SA form a SCALAR network analyzer - no Smith Charts or measurement of the complex portion of impedances.

And once you figure out what Smith Charts display you will wonder how you got along without them. ?Darn useful and easy to think about.

Dave,

there is an exception: one of the Advantest (former Takeda Riken) spectrum analysers with tracking generator (4167?) had the option of phase display and in addtiion with an external bridge? a smith display was possible

Absolutely.? I no longer use SWR curver.? The Smith Chart tells you everything you need to know and then some.? SWR curves are lacking in the complex portion of impedances and circuits.? The reflection in vector form is also useful, but the Smith Chart covers all the bases.

Larry,
The topic is tuning a duplexer:
You wrote: "i've done it with a TinyVNA and written it up over a year ago . My comments are all over at?[email protected]?"

Searching for your post is made very difficult by group.io's poorly implemented search feature and the fact that is not a URL link but a mailto:
This old man would surely appreciate seeing your write up if he could find it.

sure, after you skew down the page you'll find all sorts of ads, is that the idea?

Hi Mike,

Not sure what your problem is. I see only the post that was linked, no ads, no 404.

guess I should've splaineed myself more gooderer, i.e. on the "referenced" page there is a LINK < > where the page goes to 404, sometimes talking (figure of speech) gets me in "HOT" water, nuxxed time I'll be most careful. :0)
