Antennas and generator mode #ultra

bench builder

I'm learning my way around the tinySA ultra and have a newbie question about generator mode.

I'm trying to determine if (1) the stock antenna is suitable for testing the output when I'm in the field or (2) if I need to upgrade the antenna to test the output over anything more than short distances

Re: What to do when a selftest fails

Hi, I just received my tinysa ultra and I'm experiencing the same issue on test 10: signal level fail.
I just came across this group and was unaware about counterfeit products.
I'd like to confirm wheter it's a genuine product or a counterfeit one, please.
Thank you very much

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Have you tried a different SMA jumper?? What does it do if you clear the calibration and run it uncalibrated?

Re: Failure after Firmware update

I do not think this is a HW problem.
Just to be sure,
with the latest FW, can you unplug the battery for at least 10 seconds and see if that makes a difference

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Any touch screen I've received as part of an assembly over the last couple of decades has come with a plastic film cover to protect before use.? If you don't want that small amount of protection -? finger printing - just peel it off.

Re: Failure after Firmware update

I took off the front to short the boot pins out to enter DFU mode. In the old firmware I couldn't see the menu option for DFU :)

and as for the plastic film.... thats been on since it came. I just left it on to stop screen getting scratched. Lazy I suppose, or hoping screen lasts forever.

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Hi Erik.

I tried firmware versions back? one at a time to tinySA_v0.1-40-g27313d4 where I no longer see the pulses as in the picture, just a flat line that sees no signals, even after a calibrate cycle.

The next version tinySA_v0.1-41-g76bb2d5 is where the firmware seems to change and be pulses are displayed, and from that version onwards.

Maybe I have damaged the device by upgrading firmware? or something has happened at a hardware level.??
I'll have to get it under the magnifying lamp and see if anything obvious jumps out at me :)

Martin

Here you can find all old FW's

Suggest you go back to older FW and try to find per which FW things go wrong

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Hi Erik,

Yes I tried CONFIG/LEVEL CAL with the two ports connected with a short SMA lead.
then I have done a RESET CALIBRATION followed by CALIBRATE

I can see the unit go through the process, but those pulses are always there .
It then shows calibration complete, but after touching the display once more I get the same problem.

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Martin, did you try a calibration?

Re: Failure after Firmware update

Thanks for the super quick response.?
Just done a CONFIG/MORE/CLEAR CONFIG? then 1234? enter.

sadly the unit has same issue after that procedure.
I wish I had made a note of the original formware version so that I could try and to back to that and check.?

Martin

Re: Failure after Firmware update

The image suggests a failed calibration, possibly caused by updating the FW and not doing a CLEAR CONFIG
Can you try a CONFIG/MORE/CLEAR CONFIG?

Failure after Firmware update

Hi.?? Has anyone seen this issue before ??
My Tiny SA is original version 0.3 hardware purchased a long long time ago...
Was working OK with no problems but had original firmware in it, so I devided to update it.
Using the Tiny-SA app uploaded the latest tinySA_v1.4-142-ge5dbf70.bin firmware and power cycled unit.
Screen now shows random pulses and fails all selftests :(

I've tried other versions of older firmware and unit still exhibits same behaviour.

Regards

Martin

Re: I think I've totally bricked mine in ALL ways! #Bricked #tinysa

Push the jog switch to the side (not down) and switch the tinySA off and on, release the jog switch
If this removes the weird spikes in the regular scan do a CALIBRATION and run the selftest

I think I've totally bricked mine in ALL ways! #Bricked #tinysa

I've had my TinySA for a year or so now, and it's always worked well.

Yesterday I looked at the signal from my UV-5R by leaving the sockets unconnected - just the yellow end caps on them!
It worked great... the large attenuation from having no antenna meant I could see a small signal around 144MHz.

I flashed the latest firmware on it. Tried calibration and it all failed!
I flashed my original firmware (1.4.83-gbe4f4d6 built Apr 13, 2023)

Calibration still failed! So did the self test. =(

When I say "failed" - I mean the WHOLE set of tests (besides the screen)... not just the Attenuation one (Test 12)!

I'm surprised a little - I thought I was safe with no antenna attached.... guess I've fried lots of stuff. =(

Can anyone confirm?

I turn it on :

This is the result of calibration with a connector across the sockets.

Re: Trouble connecting the TinySA Ultra to PC

Yesterday, I tried Putty, but it didn't work. However, after a cup of tea, a refreshing sleep, and your message, I decided to take another look at the connection settings in the tinySA configuration menu. I noticed it was set to 'SERIAL,' so I changed it to 'USB.' After that adjustment, it started working perfectly fine )

I apologize for bothering you with what may have seemed like silly questions, and thank you for your rapid replies. Both Putty and the TinySA-App connect and work well for me
