Re: Attenuators

ESD is predominately a voltage involved phenomenon.? Power (watts) is predominately a power involved phenomenon.? ESD damage is usually caused by an overvoltage to some or another component(s).? While an attenuator will reduce voltage and offer some protection against a possible overvoltage vulnerability, that is not its primary purpose.? Low-capacity diodes are the proper component to install for overvoltage protection (NOT Zeners of TVSs or Transorbs!).? However, a 3 dB attenuator can and will reduce incident voltages, but not as effectively as a proper low-capacitance diode.? In that respect, a 3 dB attenuator is usually the choice.?

100W is a bit of overkill for ESD protection don't you think:-))

Why the obsession with 3dB attenuators in these discussions, I do not know!
The interest comes from using a 3 db attenuator as at least a hedge against ESD problems. Otherwise, yeah, not something the world of SA rises or falls on. :)
