Things I Love

Vicki Backman

Well, Merriweather, the 60 lbs was lost from numerous things. First, I suffer from Migraine Headaches very very bad, almost daily. So, back in May of 2006, my Dr. put me on a med called Topomax. It has 2 pretty strong side affects to it, Hair loss and Pseudo-Anorexia. thankfully not "all" of my hair has fallen out. as for the weight loss, I used the med (along with better eating habits) and the weight has sort of fallen off.

I was 255lbs and I am now 195. I used to wear a size 28 dress and now can fit into a size 18 skirt.

I am happy but, the funny part is that, Tim (husband) doesn't want me loosing more weight. I keep telling him just let me be able to shop in the misses size and that will make me happy and get this, he said: I don't want my wife to become one those skinny a$$ women I like her with meat on her bones lol

Digitizing software

rosaleatkns

Hi! I usually lurk. Thanks for all the hints, sites, freebies. I've
learned a lot. Now I want to learn how to digitize. What software is
good. I am a pensioner so need it to be reasonably priced. Where can I
find good tutorials for the software? Is Embird Studio a good choice?
Or Embroidery Magic? I will only be making designs for myself to use.
I have Embird Basic program and use a Janome MC300E. I would
appreciate some advice or hints from the group.

Digitizing help

mundle13

Hello. I am new to embroidery and have been reading the posts from
this group frequently. I am in need of some digitizing help rather
quickly. The college that I work at is holding an Iron Chef
competition and would like this logo embroidered on 17 aprons by next
week. I have the image saved as a jpeg but can't get it worked thru
the design center. After working it over it tells me that it cannot
save because the object is too complex. AAAGGHH! Can anyone help me,
and how much would you charge me? Time is an issue for me as I told
them I would let them know tomorrow whether I could do it or
not....HELP! Thank you in advance for any help that anyone can give to
me. Michelle in Missouri

Hello all,

I am a bit overexcited over this bit of news... so if I goof... I apologize
in advance... LOL I was blessed with the honor to make available this book
for you...

Again a truly great honor, I was given permission to have the digitizing
tutorial workbook by Walter Floriani - Destined to Digitize on my website.
I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I know that a great many of you
who aren't able to attend Walter's seminar and classes have been wanting
this book since it came out... I have very few copies at this time and I
can't promise I will be able to have more as this is the first time this has
been done... So if learning to digitize or improve your digitizing matters
to you... this is THE book...

Have a veryyyyyyyy wonderful week... mine is starting with a smile... LOL

"Alternative" Designs

Nikita2025

I'm having lots of fun with my CE-100. I've been playing with it
non-stop for the past month. My house is a mess but gosh I'm havin'
fun!

I do however feel that there's something missing in the realm of
embroidery designs. I'm all about cute and cuddly ( my first niece is
due in March)but where are the more "alternative" designs...for lack
of a better word.

I'm talking about the cool/funky/gothic/rock n' roll/punk designs. I
was talking with a fellow crafter on craftster.org and she agrees
with
me. There's just too few designs in these particular genres. I'm
talking nautical stars, pin-up girls, skull and crossbones, pirate
ships and tattoo designs!

So I thought I'd come here to the All-Knowing board and see what you
guys have come up with. Or am I alone in this?

that a standard queen sized quilt can be worth over $500 in

quilt had been made FOR the deceased, and loved and used BY the

the quilt was made for another person who wanted to give it away in

Dear Ladies - what all this discussion reminds me of is how much women's
traditional work is dismissed and devalued. It is if our time (and us) and
work and creations have no value at all. That is why it is so exciting to
see quilt museums or women's art shows at state fairs - at least someone
recognizes the value, beauty and skill (and time) put into these created
objects of beauty. But because embroidery and quilting are traditionally
thought of as women's "pastimes" much like home sewing, they have no value
in the outer world.

I've had a friend brag to me she found a handmade quilt at WalMart or Target
for $50 and proudly put this shabby poorly made quilt on her bed. Talk
about devalued women and children who put these together for next to nothing
in China, but they have value in people's eyes because some discount store
sells them. My own granddaughter, the oldest at 21, was talking about an
Amish quilt shop she went into and those quilts were sooo expensive, some
were over $100! I looked at her and said, honey, I've made you several
quilts, and I don't think any of them had less that $80 worth of fabric and
thread in them. Those Amish quilts should be selling for $800 and up so the
women could make $10 per hour pre-tax and recover their fabric and batting
costs. Her mouth dropped.

I also had to educate my favorite nephew/son on this topic when he asked for
quilts for his children. I would have made them anyways, but when I
explained the time, skill, and money that goes into making one he gained a
whole new respect for "women's work". Good!

The idea of someone's hand-stitched wholecloth quilt being used as a beach
blanket makes my skin crawl. Don't think I'd be making anything more for
them - next Christmas (and every Christmas thereafter) they might get a
beach towel or two from Walmart! :) Save your time, work and money for
people who know the value of what they are receiving.

Yes, it speaks VERY well of her.

I understand. I know that there have been times, I have put a lot of
thought into something, and the person didn't receieve it as I thought
they would, you know the handmade thing . . . no matter how well it
comes out, it seems to lack value if one didn't spend big bucks on it,
as if our time isn't valuable. I do understand, all too well.

However, when the lady arrived at the funeral home intending to put
the quilt in the coffin, her own sisters prevented her from doing
so. Two of them were quilters, and knew the value of the quilt in
question. They found another alternative coverlet.
Ahhhh, intervention! LOL.

Sorry for this rather grim topic,
Not at all. I am a volunteer counselor (not a pro) for some grim and
hairy stuff sometimes, so it all still touches me (I still feel for
others deeply).

but it does illustrate a life
lesson. What you give away, you give away.
Very true.

Another example: my sister-in-law made a kingsize white "whole
cloth" quilt, entirely handstitched for her son's 25th anniversary.
She worked on it three years. That summer, she saw it being used on
the beach as a beach blanket,
I literally gasped at the concept of that. You know <sigh> sometimes
others just have NO clue of the time and effort that is put into these
items, I *like* to think it's because they've never done/created it? I
know, this is putting it kindly . . . they should *think* about what
they are doing, and I have my feisty moments, I probably would have
said something, LOL.

Again, nothing was said. A gift is a gift. This could mean that the
next quilt for them will be a tied quilt, LOL.
Something with far less effort, given with the comment, "I noticed you
like to go to the beach, this blanket is comfortable but suitable for
such" <-HINT<HINT<HINT . . . LOL.

Hooray for Merriweather!

What I really like:

Too many to list, but I love these things:

Damsel flies ~ a recent favorite, because in late summer, one of my
DD's and I were sitting outside and something was fluttering around
us, I said . . . "Oh look! a damsel fly!" and held out my hand and it
landed on my fingertip, this probably happens all the time to folks,
but *I* thought that was pretty kewl!

Ladybugs, dragonflies . . . pretty sunsets, a cool breeze on a warm
day, my little African frog swimming around the tank next to me, I
LOVE to watch him.

When my flowers bloom (can be a challenge here) and the smell of the
scented ones.

Finally, after a couple of years, beging able to get the breath sounds
right on my NAF (Native American Flute, which I am not particularly
adept at, but has a drone on one side so it sounds pretty anyway). My
little folk harps of course, they aren't the fancy, expensive ones but
I love them anyway.

And a multitude of other things, mostly small because those come
around more and while often brief, there are a lot to savor; some big
. . . that there would never be room for and would likely have folks
yawning, LOL.

Glenn,

Enjoy the sun. I think you're just jealous that he's out there sun baking in
you're inside working. LOL

Are they poisonous? Is it the same thing as a Carpet Python? I like watching
snakes. Besides, they eat the chipmunks that are playing in my upper crawl
space and maybe chewing on the wires.

Re: auto digitising yuk!!!

Glenn Harris Designs

G'day
a couple of years ago, i was asked to teach Generations. I was offered the program for free, all the books and help i needed to master the program. What put me off it, was when i was given a demonstration of how at the click of a switch, a design can be made.
What you ended up with, was a design when sewn out, looked like a Mack truck had rolled over it.

If i were starting out in digitising now, i would not buy a auto digitiser, but would learn to digitise properly,
My advice to anyone who wants to learn to digitise, do not buy a auto digitiser just to learn how to digitise bad, pick on a mentor, buy their designs, or better get their freebies, and sew them out. Ask yourself, why did they do something a certain way.
Dont sew out a auto digitised design, and try and work out why it was done, what are you going to learn??????
Best wishes

When you just starting out, and the program came with your machine -
sometimes it's best to stick with something that is relatively easy
to use and learn from - most, not all you can set density and fill
but most are limited. Although I wasted money on one, which now
sits on the shelf, I know I started with auto digitizing and found
out that was not the route for me.
