A gift is supposed to be freely given

The qults my gandmother made for me when I was small are still in
use. They have gone camping, some have stains that will not come out, but each time I use one of the quilts I think of my grandmother. She did not make these as museum pieces, she made them to be used. My mother recently moved into a small appartment and said we are to give her no more doo dads because she does not have room for them. I still like to give her things I make, and the items are given with the understanding that items which do not fit will be given to the church sale at the fall festival. A gift given with conditions like you must use it, but only for things I want you to use it for is not a gift. I know that some of the things I have given end up in a drawer, but I like to think the reciever gets it out from time to time and admires it. Likewise if a gift goes on a camping trip, or is used as a tent in the back yard, I was there by proxy. I liike to think gifts and forgivness are both unconditional. Phyllis |

I just love the collection. It has been added to my 'want/need' list. I am having trouble with the freebies. I just know I'm doing something wrong, but need help. I joined your group, but nothing is in the files.....and are the Bookmark Passions free w/purchase only? I couldn't find a spot to download them....but then again it's very early in the morning, it's probably just me.

LOL I went into the local quilt shop in Mena Arkansas this past month to look at some of the FINE artwork done on them. I fell in love with a wedding ring type quilt, ALL hand quilted by local mormons and WOW were they nice :)
The lowest price in the shop was 1600.00 for hand sewn quilts, and they go FAST there too. I have not seen one stay longer then a month in their shop :) Connie took over two months on her first quilt (learning experience) and wow was it nice when it was finished. we also took it to be longarmed when the top was finished, and it still cost us over 450.00 to do it ourselves. I think a lot of people will go WOW to the prices of "real quilts" but the quality is much better. My mother made me a quilt when I was 14, now my oldest son has it, and believe it or not its still useable with OVER 300 washings in the past (***) years. I think that is so sad for your niece. My heart ache is with my Dad.
I just cannot bring myself to make anything for him because they redid the house and all the things I had made him over the years ended up in the yard sale! I tried to tell myself that the color scheme had changed and the things no longer matched but it made me secretly shed some tears. rmafriendship Nancy in TN What do you think of this one--- My niece made a beautifulscripture quilt for her new daughter-in-law's mother. It took her two yearsseveral months to make the quilt, and assemble it and machine quilt it.She told the recipient it was a labor of love, and she hoped it wouldbe well used. This week she got a call from the lady, asking if shemother- in-law!!! The deceased lady often complained of being cold.something I'vemade. |

They have no idea quilting fabric is $8-$10 a yard or that it takes months sometimes to make a quilt. You can buy a 'quilt' any size for $20-$40 at the discount places so they have not idea of the quality difference in a 'real' quilt. If you send a quilt out for quilting plus the fabrics and batting you purchased to make it, you can have over $500, some times a lot more, just in that, not counting the time it took you to piece it. an older guy came in to the LQS one cay and wanted a quilt made for his wife. He offered to pay $25 for it!!! I did a hand needleturn Jacobean appliqu quilt on a black background and let me tell you it was a lot of work! Took several years as I only worked on it on Thursday afternoons. It was a great quilt when it was done but when my sister's business partner got done long arm quilting it, it is FANTASTIC. I told them to make the quilt sing and it is truly Grand Opera now. I will be keeping that unless someone comes up with some big bucks for it.<ggg> It is entered in Paducah.
