A gift is supposed to be freely given

Phyllis Driggs

The qults my gandmother made for me when I was small are still in
use. They have gone camping, some have stains that will not come
out, but each time I use one of the quilts I think of my
grandmother. She did not make these as museum pieces, she made them
to be used.

My mother recently moved into a small appartment and said we are to
give her no more doo dads because she does not have room for them.
I still like to give her things I make, and the items are given with
the understanding that items which do not fit will be given to the
church sale at the fall festival.

A gift given with conditions like you must use it, but only for
things I want you to use it for is not a gift. I know that some of
the things I have given end up in a drawer, but I like to think the
reciever gets it out from time to time and admires it. Likewise if
a gift goes on a camping trip, or is used as a tent in the back
yard, I was there by proxy.

I liike to think gifts and forgivness are both unconditional.

Phyllis

I just love the collection. It has been added to my 'want/need' list. I am having trouble with the freebies. I just know I'm doing something wrong, but need help. I joined your group, but nothing is in the files.....and are the Bookmark Passions free w/purchase only? I couldn't find a spot to download them....but then again it's very early in the morning, it's probably just me.
Thank you in advance for the help. Jo

Classified Advertising In Local Markets

suman soni

Even with the growth of online classifieds and the increase in popularity in sites such as Craigslist, newspaper classifieds are still the preferred method of advertising for many wishing to sell unwanted items. This is evident in the number of print classified ads listed daily in newspapers and magazines throughout the country and worldwide. These advertisements may cost more than those which can be posted on the Internet, however, posting your classified advertisements in the newspaper will likely increase the chance of a sale as you are reaching a more local market. It is unlikely that someone from across the country or around the world will want to purchase your used furniture, lawn mower or Kenmore washer and thus much of the traffic that would come to your Internet ad would be useless. However, due to the fact that most newspapers that feature classified advertisements have a local circu

LOL, then they haven't looked closely enough, or ever been to a
quilting store, I have. Some of those fabrics are boo-coo expensive.

Maybe they were 50 years or more ago but not anymore.
Traditionally, many were.

believe anyone is that obtuse! They have no idea quilting fabric
is $8-$10 a yard
I know, I love looking at all the prints.

an older guy came in to the LQS one cay and wanted a quilt
made for his wife. He offered to pay $25 for it!!!
OMG, LOL . . . did he make it out alive? Did a hoarde of women chase
him out with pitchforks and flaming torches? I would be surprised if
he at least did not get a few choice words. No offense to the fellas
but "Silly man!".

for it.<ggg> It is entered in Paducah. Hope it gets chosen for
judging.
Good luck, it sounds gorgeous.

Re: Things the Bug me... (For: Caroline)

LOL I went into the local quilt shop in Mena Arkansas this past month to look at some of the FINE artwork done on them. I fell in love with a wedding ring type quilt, ALL hand quilted by local mormons and WOW were they nice :)
The lowest price in the shop was 1600.00 for hand sewn quilts, and they go FAST there too. I have not seen one stay longer then a month in their shop :)

Connie took over two months on her first quilt (learning experience) and wow was it nice when it was finished. we also took it to be longarmed when the top was finished, and it still cost us over 450.00 to do it ourselves.

I think a lot of people will go WOW to the prices of "real quilts" but the quality is much better. My mother made me a quilt when I was 14, now my oldest son has it, and believe it or not its still useable with OVER 300 washings in the past (***) years. (not giving up my age LOL)

I am a pensioner so need it to be reasonably priced.
Where can I find good tutorials for the software?
Some of the best tutorials you will find for digitizing (with Embird)
are from Kathy at Flying Needle, you can read all about it at the URL
provided below:

Her prices are very reasonable for the Studio Club, there is a
different lesson every month, and step by step support available via
private forum, the videos are what does the trick, it's like having
her right there with you.

I have a lot of tutorials, free and purchased, hers are some of the best.

Is Embird Studio a good choice?
I think so, because upgrades with new features are always being added
and are reasonably priced and usually at least yearly. The developers
are responsive to their client base, which is always a good thing.
There are many places you can purchase Embird products, but the most
reasonable I have found is through Secrets of Embroidery:

If you decide to go with Embird Studio, you can save a few dollars
that way. Though give the developers time to get the password to you,
they are in Eastern Europe, so there is usually a time difference,
usually though it's within 24 hours.

Or Embroidery Magic?
I haven't tried Embroidery Magic, so another will have to offer
insight on that one =-)

Re: Things the Bug me...

Nancy Robison

I think that is so sad for your niece. My heart ache is with my Dad.
I just cannot bring myself to make anything for him because they
redid the house and all the things I had made him over the years
ended up in the yard sale! I tried to tell myself that the color
scheme had changed and the things no longer matched but it made me
secretly shed some tears.

What do you think of this one--- My niece made a beautiful
scripture
quilt for her new daughter-in-law's mother. It took her two years
to gather the themed material and scripture panels. It took
several
months to make the quilt, and assemble it and machine quilt it.
She
told the recipient it was a labor of love, and she hoped it would
be
well used. This week she got a call from the lady, asking if she
would mind if the quilt was put in the coffin of her sister's
mother-
in-law!!! The deceased lady often complained of being cold.
My poor niece was struck speechless. Now, that's REALLY "putting
something away"

Caroline

a lot of people have no idea what it takes to make a quilt. "It didn't
cost you anything because they are made from scraps." That statement just
fries me. Maybe they were 50 years or more ago but not anymore. I can't
believe anyone is that obtuse! They have no idea quilting fabric is $8-$10
a yard or that it takes months sometimes to make a quilt. You can buy a
'quilt' any size for $20-$40 at the discount places so they have not idea of
the quality difference in a 'real' quilt. If you send a quilt out for
quilting plus the fabrics and batting you purchased to make it, you can have
over $500, some
times a lot more, just in that, not counting the time it took you to piece
it.

an older guy came in to the LQS one cay and wanted a quilt made for his
wife. He offered to pay $25 for it!!!

I did a hand needleturn Jacobean appliqu quilt on a black background and
let me tell you it was a lot of work! Took several years as I only worked
on it on Thursday afternoons. It was a great quilt when it was done but
when my sister's business partner got done long arm quilting it, it is
FANTASTIC. I told them to make the quilt sing and it is truly Grand Opera
now. I will be keeping that unless someone comes up with some big bucks
for it.<ggg> It is entered in Paducah. Hope it gets chosen for judging.

I'll get off the soap box. (LOL)

Thanks, Charlotte, for your perspective on the quilt situation.
You're welcome =-)

I was proud of Nancy for keeping her head about it
Yes, it speaks VERY well of her.

even though she was hurt.
I understand. I know that there have been times, I have put a lot of
thought into something, and the person didn't receieve it as I thought
they would, you know the handmade thing . . . no matter how well it
comes out, it seems to lack value if one didn't spend big bucks on it,
as if our time isn't valuable. I do understand, all too well.

However, when the lady arrived at the funeral home intending to put
the quilt in the coffin, her own sisters prevented her from doing
so. Two of them were quilters, and knew the value of the quilt in
question. They found another alternative coverlet.
Ahhhh, intervention! LOL.

Sorry for this rather grim topic,
Not at all. I am a volunteer counselor (not a pro) for some grim and
hairy stuff sometimes, so it all still touches me (I still feel for
others deeply).

but it does illustrate a life
lesson. What you give away, you give away.
Very true.

Another example: my sister-in-law made a kingsize white "whole
cloth" quilt, entirely handstitched for her son's 25th anniversary.
She worked on it three years. That summer, she saw it being used on
the beach as a beach blanket,
I literally gasped at the concept of that. You know <sigh> sometimes
others just have NO clue of the time and effort that is put into these
items, I *like* to think it's because they've never done/created it? I
know, this is putting it kindly . . . they should *think* about what
they are doing, and I have my feisty moments, I probably would have
said something, LOL.

Again, nothing was said. A gift is a gift. This could mean that the
next quilt for them will be a tied quilt, LOL.
Something with far less effort, given with the comment, "I noticed you
like to go to the beach, this blanket is comfortable but suitable for
such" <-HINT<HINT<HINT . . . LOL.

Ah, Charlotte, You must be a quilter!!!
No, not yet, I just grew up with a lot of this stuff with my grandma,
she taught me from very early on, to appreciate such things.

I LOVE crazy quilts, as randomly put together as possible, LOL (crazy
crazy quilts?) LOL.

But
the quilt was made for another person who wanted to give it away in
less than a month.
Wow, that definately sheds a different light on the matter.

My niece reacted far better than I would have,
I think she handled it really well, at least someone intervened, LOL.

positive post, I will mention one of my favorite things-
