Re: about freebie hunters!!!
ruth pullella
The thoughts expressed below just brought a load of emotion to me. I wish I could express myself like this as these statements truly reflect my feelings about the hobby we share and the appreciation not often expressed enough. I too had to retire at age 55 due to severe heart trouble. I am trying to build a small craft business to sell my items at fairs and through my nieces store in Louisianna as my health permits. Sewing is about one of the only things I can do, housecleaning ( like vacuuning) is almost impossible for me to manage. While I am able to buy a few sets when I sell some of my items, I do use the freebies and only download them when I can use them. I try to return the gratitude by posting to the groups I belong to and offering help when I can.

Like you, I had TONS of zip files of designs, and so I bought the Deduper

program and had not realized that it was going to make all those individual folders. I was stunned when I saw it. No way was I going to open thousands of folders one at at time to move the designs out. So, my sweet hubby went into our back-ups of my computer folders (pre-Deduped date) on my computer, and he brought in the original Download folder again for me. (I re-named the Download folder that I had Deduped before bringing in the back-up copy) I used Buzztools to convert all the downloaded zips to PES......then I Deduped all those. I still have a bit of a mess to try to go through, but am figuring out which ones to delete a bit easier than the time I was having of opening each Deduped folder to move the design out. If I think of a better method, I will bring in that old back-up copy of download and try again. Thank goodness for back-ups! Like you, the Deduper was not the bargain that I thought it was going to be for my needs......but it has it's use and it's place. If you think of a better way to do what I have been trying to do, let me know. (I did not want to reply to Hooked on Embroidery, as I did not wish to start a big arguement on the list) :) Has anybody figured out how not to have all the designs that Deduper Dedupes --

Re: Deduper and Buzz Tools or WIlcom 9.0
bingen100
I understand what you're saying.
I just purchased DeDuper and was startled to see how it placed each design in it's own folder. There is certainly a good rational for doing it like this as it keeps the jpgs, pdfs, and docs together with the design. Some file names bear no relation to the design name. Very handy for projects, etc. However, it is a total pain if there is only one file in each folder as you have to go through each folder one-by- one to put them in a joint folder. We need to request they create the option for seperate folders or a single folder. In the meantime, we will need to look around for a batch file to combine folders. If I find one I'll post it on this board. Pat Has anybody figured out how not to have all the designs thatDeduper Dedupes NOT go into individual folders in the MAIN named folder? When thishappens Buzz Tool will only give you ONE design per page instead ofmultiple same with Wilcom 9.0. I need to be able to quickly SEE all my designswith Wilcom or Buzz Tool by catalogue, not one design at a time. I've beentrying to explain my problem on other groups but they aren't getting it, theyseem to think it's my Buzz Tool setting, yes I have it set to multipledesigns, but when the Deduper puts each and every design into it's ownindividual folder these programs can only see what's in that one folder, so if thereis just one design in each folder they only will show one design. I haveover 10,000 designs I would like to Dedupe, but don't have days of spare timeto do it. I'm trying to figure out how to easily get all these designsDeduped and then somehow put back into one main category folder not thousandsof folders my money on this program. |
Re: about freebie hunters!!!
Hi everybody
I read all the comments about freebie hunters and can only say thank you to all the digitisers that are so generous in giving freebies. When I bought my embroidery machine just over two years ago, I had no idee what can be achieved on my machine. I was very nervous to try all the different techniques and looking at the prices, was very nervous to buy. Living in South Africa and having to buy in dollars was just too expensive. As I got more confident with it, and thats thanks to everybody in all the various groups who so generously share there knowledge and designs, I got braver and pulled out the credit card and started buying some of the design sets that I have been dying to try. I still freebie hunt, who doesn't LOL, but because of the freebies that allowed me to gain confidence in the various techniques, have got no problem in buying a design (or two) when there is some spare cash in the household budget!! Therefor, I would like to say thank you to everybody out there that through there freebies and advise help those of us that really got no idea of the scope and creativity of the machine embroidery world when they buy a machine. I love my machine and it is the best investment I have ever made. Thank you kindly and happy stitching everybody! Something I think would be wonderful, if before you grab the freebie is you could see what you were getting. I don't want to just download a freebie just because it is free. I like something I know I would use. I do love getting the free ones because I'm on fixed income so I can't get many. There is some designs out there I would love to have but have to wait until I can get them. I want to thank the people who gives them to us, where they are fancy or just plain jane.

Re: In re topic Unsubbing and being banned - cheap designs
PJR
I'm not talking pro or con about any particular group, but I agree with you that you can't lump everyone into the same grouping. There are some lovely inexpensive (cheap) designs out there, and there are also some expensive designs that aren't worth a darn. Same as in anything you get at the store, sometimes higher price means higher quality, but if you shop around, often you can find quality for less.

When I download designs (free or bought) I add a two or three letter identifier to the file name (I keep a list of what letters are for what site). That way if I don't stitch it immediately, I can later tell where a bad or good design came from, and add it to my list of sites to either stay away from or frequent. Re: Things the Bug me...

My daughter made me a lapquilt not long after she started quilting (it is gorgeous), and expressly informed me that should she find out it wasn't being used, she would take it back, LOL. She loves that when she sees photos (she lives quite a distance) of our house, it's always on the sofa in the background, but rarely neatly folded, as it's used often.

I told Pam to USE it and she was like "OOOHH no, it is way to pretty to be used." I dont like to see the things I made put away. I like to see them out and getting worn and dirty.... lol |

Re: In re topic Unsubbing and being banned
I would like to add to what Connie just said; I know Connie's designs; I use to test for her; They are not done cheaply. Connie and Bart have quality designs. They sell them at a low price so people who are on a fixed income can buy them. So, my point is not all low cost designs are done cheaply.

Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 12:16 PM Subject: [HookedOnEmbroidery] Re: In re topic Unsubbing and being banned I agree with you 100% Linda. It seems all people want nowadays is free, free, free, or cheap, cheap, cheap. You can tell those groups that give away tons of free designs. They have the highest membership. Do you think 1/2 of those members would be there if the owner didn't give away free, free, free? I highly doubt it! I have been to some of those groups and have downloaded some of the free ones. After stitching them out, I unsubbed myself and took them off my list to check out their website. I can't believe that some of these so-called digitizers even sell anything. I recently also downloaded a free set being given away during this month. I opened 1 design and noticed it had 23 color changes! LOL I had to chuckle. I also compared the actual stitchout to the picture of the design. It looked nothing like the picture and that's why it bugs me that digitizers don't use actual scanned images. Someone said that not all digitizers have a scanner or digital camera. I don't believe that should be an excuse. Scanners can be bought for less than $50. I want to see what a design looks like (in real life) before I am going to purchase anything. The digitizers who use the generated images from the programs they are using are just trying to fool everybody. I could go on and on, but have said enough I guess. I have decided that I will only download a free design to check out the digitizer's work and only for those I am considering to buy. You can almost tell immediately those that pump out a new collection every few days that they are using auto-digitizing programs. I don't call this digitizing. And maybe that's why they sell them so cheap. Yes, cheap. And cheap is what the final product looks like. Shirly . |
Re: about freebie hunters!!!
Miems, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think if we digitizers would admit it, we all started out as Freebie Hunters. We got our first little embroidery machine and it was like an addition, from designs to software to digitizing our own and not even having time to stitch anymore, so collecting designs became a thing of the past. I find that since I started digitizing professionally, I give away more than I sell. Maybe someday that will change, but I have enjoyed seeing my designs stitched and enjoyed so much, that I can't help giving them away.

As for the sharing of designs, I know that when I got my first machine, nobody told me about sharing, copyrights or any thing like that. If we don't explain to new embroiders, what and why, they will think, "If it's free, why can't a give it too my friend?" Instead of fussing about things, we all need to learn to explain the "why's" in a nice way. Thanks for your outlook on things. Mudd ----- Original Message -----
