unsubbing - Manners count

capri _xau

Usually it's not a problem PROVIDED you let them know your reasons.
That's the point.

It's just old fashioned MANNERS. Never used to happen years ago when everyone was careful to be nice but on lists, people forget that they're being watched by many. Internet patrols, police, yahoo police, - you would probably be surprised if you knew WHO a lot of people are that you talk to - both good and bad!

I've done the same thing as you, but I take the time to notify the list days before I unsub. I like to keep my options open and don't want to be not be allowed back on.

Manners count at all times.

Hugs,

Sherrie

I have to admit that up until this point I didn't think too much about joining and leaving groups. I go through phases. Suddenly I find myself seeking information on a certain subject (not just machine embroidery) so I search yahoo and join several groups on that topic. When I've been a member for awhile I tend to leave some of the groups because either my interest has waned or my questions have been answered or I've gotten busy and can't keep up with the e-mails.

I've joined and left Flylady a few times. We got a labrador retriever puppy so I joined a few groups on dog training and retrievers and so on. A few of the groups didn't appeal to me so I left.

When I've been spending too much on embroidery designs I cut back on the groups I'm on so that I'm not tempted. When freebies are offered I generally download them but not always. I've never sent an explanation to a list moderator.

I do know that I have spent a lot of money on designs from a variety of designers and it would be a shame for them to ban me from their list because I left due to personal reasons, lack of time, etc.

Susan

ISO Sleigh with word underneath HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

capri _xau

Ever have something and not use it, then lose it and it becomes SOOOO important to get it back???

I once had a santa sleigh and when I was doing some file cleaning, I accidently deleted it. I have searched for over 12 months to try finding it again but to no avail. I have even emailed digitisers who I thought had given it away to see if I can purchse it, but noone I've contacted owned it.

The sleigh is red, was designed that the word "sleigh" was the supports for the runners on the bottom and it was not attached to reindeer, nor did it have a santa or toy bag (I don't think).

Have you seen it? It was the best sleigh I've seen for a long time because it was unusual. It would have to be about 2 or 3 years old now at least.

Oh, I hope someone out there has it and can tell me where to go get one and not just where to go lol !

Hugs,

Sherrie

Helena, I totally agree with you.
I needed confidence when I first started out and now, I am looking at the digitising of them to see what others have done and so I value them even more highly.
I am starting to digitise a few little odds and ends and really appreciate the variety of techniques that are in my files. Like Miems, I too have a few special designs that I keep coming back to because of the artwork used I guess.
What I really find useful to the next stage that I am in is the digi-challenges to compare the same design done so many different ways.

Hi everybody

I read all the comments about freebie hunters and can only say thank you to all the digitisers that are so generous in giving freebies. When I bought my embroidery machine just over two years ago, I had no idee what can be achieved on my machine. I was very nervous to try all the different techniques and looking at the prices, was very nervous to buy. Living in South Africa and having to buy in dollars was just too expensive. As I got more confident with it, and thats thanks to everybody in all the various groups who so generously share there knowledge and designs, I got braver and pulled out the credit card and started buying some of the design sets that I have been dying to try. I still freebie hunt, who doesn't LOL, but because of the freebies that allowed me to gain confidence in the various techniques, have got no problem in buying a design (or two) when there is some spare cash in the household budget!!

Therefor, I would like to say thank you to everybody out there that through there freebies and advise help those of us that really got no idea of the scope and creativity of the machine embroidery world when they buy a machine. I love my machine and it is the best investment I have ever made.

Thank you kindly and happy stitching everybody!

Please do :) I think the creator needs to know some of the bugs we have

Hi Helena

Just wanted to say that you live in such a beautiful place. My husband worked for an oil drilling company, and they were bringing a rig from Scotland to the Gulf of Mexico. They made a stop in Durban, and from that minute he started "pestering" the company to transfer him to South Africa. Sure enough, about 6 months later we were transferred to Cape Town, and found a beautiful flat in Clifton. Our landlady owned the restaurant at Kirstenbosch Gardens, and she was the most wonderful and kind person I have ever met. We were there for 18 months, and loved it so much. I know what you mean about the exchange rate when buying with the Rand - when we were there it was only 2 rand to the dollar, but I know it's much higher now.

I have always written to the list owners before unsubbing. One list owner
never acknowledged my posts to her and then berated me when I had a
legitimate reason for wanting to come back. I even promised not to download
any of her free designs. I understand that the digitizers use their yahoo
groups as a way of advertising their site. However, there is a big
difference between being banned for life when you know you have a choice of

not let you go special notice or no mail. I will never sew out or buy

When I purchased my First Bernina, I had to wait almost 2 months for it to
get here from the time I paid for it..
And I was told about the email groups at the time of the sale from a girl at
the Bernina shop, it was one of her sales pitches, that there were thousands
of designs on the Internet..

So I mad a folder on my hard drive of all of the Yahoo groups I could find
and the Artista List by Bernina at the time.
and I saved some many free designs, I was so broke after my major big
purchase as I had to save for it and what I wanted, no credit allowed My
Husband said...

So all I had was the first 5 Bernina Design cards, That I purchased with my
machine. and My software, I purchased the Bernina Artista Ver1 designer ver,
and Then I used so many free designs!

But that is where I learned how to digitize...was fixing all of the bad free
designs
that, when converted the files were a mess.. I learned so fast to test,
test, test. no matter who did them!
as most of the files were messed up from the early conversion programs out
there..
Now the newer programs do a better job with converting the files but still
never convert a converted file as it will
still become a different file.

So I know I started out in 1998 saving free designs..

I fully agree Miems. We all started out collecting what was free -
and I can say I don't think I actually used any of them in the end.
I've only used the ones I've bought.

I give away a lot of freebies because people have the chance to
sample your work that way and they DO come back and buy if they like
what they've tried, so it is worth it to give away good quality
freebies.

I also know what the mall owners go through. I have my own site as
well and until the beginning of January, was directing sales through
Paypal. The amount of work in keeping track of who hasn't downloaded
what is very time consuming and some customers get really angry if
you don't email their files within 24 hours even though it clearly
says for the customer to download them, and full instructions are
given with screen shots etc. My site never told me when a file
wasn't downloaded so I only knew if the customer complained, so I'd
have to keep track of that too. Most people were polite when they
asked about their files but some people don't want to ask, they just
want to blame and they can be real nasty about it and accuse you of
all manner of things in the process. Generally these people don't
even apologise when they find out it was their mistake, not ours.
Add to that the amount of people that have their security turned up
so high that you can't get the files through to them by email anyway
and then complain that you haven't sent the files and you can see
where the time goes.

Now my shopping cart is directed through the mall and they have to
deal with all of this, times how many digitisers they have, plus
listening to us whinge. I also sell far more through the mall than I
do from my own website and I'm sure this is because of the promotion
that they provide and freebies are part of that promotion. When ever
there is a special on or I am designer of the week, or I put up a
project, my sales jump. This is something I can't do by myself. I
don't have the time and I don't have the money to pay to get my site
listed high on the search engines. These are the things that the
Mall does for us and it increases our sales. Surely we can do our
bit and supply the freebies? My mall request is not huge - one every
4 months is not a huge amount. I also advertise in another place and
that costs me 2 per month plus a small monthly fee, but if my
freebie is good quality and is the most downloaded, I get the next
month free. It has driven sales to my site, according to my site
statistics, so it is worth it in the end. I only need a couple of
extra sales a month to cover that cost.

My mall owner is fantastic. She is always friendly and helpful and I
love her to death. Frankly, I couldn't do this without her, so a
freebie every now and then is the very least I can do.

CRACK Recipe

I went to the Files section of this group and looked in the Recipes
folder for the recipe for this "Crack". And there was not one
there. So I did another search within the Messages for "Crack
Recipe" and found the first message with the recipe in it. So I
created a Word document with the recipe and saved it in the Recipe
folder of the Files on this Group.

But for those of you who just want the recipe, here it is. I did a
copy and paste so that the original author (Lin) can get credit for
it:

Hi. I know that i don't ever post anything off topic but My DIL made
this recipe for Christmas and I ended up bringing TOO MUCH of it
home. It has me hooked and is totally bad for me. It is called
Christmas Crack because you get addicted to it. Hope you all don't
mind if I post recipe. i had never heard about it before. thanks Lin

Hi Lydia,

A group owner has the right to run their group any way they feel fit.
They are not here for your convenience, you are here for theirs and most put in
a lot of long hours to read every mailing that comes in when it is a moderated group.
I'm not an owner of any group, nor do I sell any designs but I've been
around for a long time now and I've seen what goes on.
Maybe the lesson here is that ALL NEW MEMBERS should read the
information that is sent out to them when they join and not just ASSUME
that they know everything. It is an easy trap to fall into, just like you did, and we
have to remember that every group is different and it's rules must be respected.
I've also been on other groups where you were too so just remember
that what you do in one group gets around.
As for not buying from the website owners who happen to expect you to read their
blurbs as payback for the free designs, (and rightly so, too) that's just cutting off
your nose to spite your face. It is the most rediculous thing I've heard for a long time
because you're the one missing out, then, aren't you?

Re-read MaryLou's post below. She also seems to think that you have a problem.

Hugs,

Sherrie

We are all on fixed income as well. Some are just higher than others. By the time we buy designs Thread, all the stabilizers we need and lets not forget the machine, some do not have the money to buy all the beautiful designs available. I sell these products and try and keep that price down so everyone can buy it. If I had had any idea of how much money this embroidery passion of mine
is costing me I don't think I would have touched it with a bargepole to
start with!! LOL

When we start out as newbies in embroidery we are very excited at all
the wonderful ideas/projects that are out there for us to do. We also
are inexperienced at distinguishing between a good design and a poor
quality design so welcome the generosity of those who provide samples of
their work for us to try.

I was a member of a number yahoo embroidery groups in the early days as
I was anxious to learn as much as I could, quickly. I subsequently
unsubbed from a couple of groups because I was not impressed with the
bickering/rudeness on lists as well as some of the high handed
conditions being imposed. At the end of the day it is all about choice -
you can choose to join a group or not, you can choose to leave a group,
you can choose to be fanatically about getting designs or you can choose
not to download them.

I still belong to a few groups that regularly give out freebies; the
time, effort and generosity of these people is very much appreciated but
now I mostly don't bother to download these freebies unless it relates
to a project that I might want it for, or part of a design set that I am
really interested in/ considering buying, in which case I prefer to go
to the website and download the associated set sample. My prime
motivation in staying with the groups is hear of new developments and to
get ideas for sewing projects and where appropriate to share my learning
experiences (not often required as a lot of queries are answered by the
time I get to read my emails :-) )

Not enough hours in my day for all the things I need to do/sewing I want
to do for me to get hung up on small issues. My husband has a great
saying that he often sprouts to remind me about the need to focus on
things that matter - keep your eye on the doughnut and not the hole.

Happy sewing everyone.

Cheers
Lucy
