Softrock EnsembleRXTX
14
Hello everybody, I have just tested the output power of my 15-12-10m Softrock EnsembleRXTX. It delivers 1w on 15 and 12m and 0.7w on 10m, which is fine for me. Interestingly on 17m is also delivers 1w and about 0.6w on 20m. Given the fact I can add any low pass filter for attenuate harmonics, may I safely use it on 20 and 17m (power output and sensitivity are fine to me) or is there any possible issue using on 20 and 17m? 73, Franco iz2oos

Bought a receiver RX Ensemble II and an RXTX Ensemble. Some questions
6
Hi All; I have been lurking for about a week now after being approved for this reflector. Tony is selling things again in his store. I found this out entirely by accident. I love building and testing things. I am planning to build these units and modify them with a switched band pass and low pass filter system and a small 10-50W amp on the output. I am CW and digital mode only. I love QRP as well. I have 2 projects going now.. this one and building a modular rig like W6jl (see https://www.qrz.com/db/W6JL ) The front ends are similar with the exception that W6JL runs his with a wide open front end (there was a time when he had a preselector on it as well). I also recently purchased an SDRplay duo to play with. Not much you can do with this thing hardware wise to tweek it.. more plug and play.. not much fun here except to use it as a Specturm Analyzer (works pretty good too). Plug into USB Port..select com# and you are done.. amazing.. but I like to build things... Anyway.. It took a whole two days (weekend). I ordered from Tony on Friday.. and they were here Monday Aftternoon.. amazing. I have built an RXTX once before about 8 years ago.. but life intervened with a special needs son.. life is still intervening here even now.. but I am blessed as he is doing ok. So.. I know I need an external USB sound card. Say 24 bit, 192KHZ (or more).. I only have laptops, Mac os, Windows 10, or Linux of any flavor. 1. I see there are always people selling things here.. does anyone have an external sound card for sale that works well with an RXTX?

RXTX problem - fixed
Hi Leif, Brilliant diagnosis and suggestion. Thanks! Following your suggestion I slowed down the trace to see the modulation envelope. See new file uploaded to “Files”. The modulation was at about 700 Hz. I then closed PowerSDR and controlled the RXTX with “CFGSR" (to set the RF freq and to set/unset the PTT) and with M0KGK’s “IQ Test Software” to adjust the audio drive freq and amplitude. While watching the ‘scope showing the envelope I changed the audio freq and confirmed that the envelope period changed accordingly. Then, for no good reason, I ran up the audio amplitude. The modulation increased in % then suddenly disappeared, when I hit 0 dB drive I think. The RF waveform was now a clean sine wave, regardless of the audio drive level, changing level with the drive, all as it should be. I closed the other programs and re-opened PowerSDR and now the output was clean. So, somehow, hitting the RXTX with full audio drive cured the problem. Strange. The problem persisted with powering and unpowering the RXTX, and with unplugging all cables. A mystery to me. Hopefully it stays fixed. Leif, shall I send you SEK for a beer? 73, Roger

RXTX problem
3
Hi All, Today I checked the output of my RXTX (my all band mod version). The RF output looks like the attached ‘scope capture on all bands. If I tweak the ‘scope trigger point I can get a stable trace, nice sine wave. There is some source of jitter apparently. It is not hum on the power supply as the trace is the same if the RXTX is run on battery. A different RXTX does not show this problem. Any ideas on what is going on? Thanks and 73, Roger

I pressed the wrong key and sent the note before I was finished. Continuing.. 2. A recommendation for an external usb sound card. (I am looking at Leif's videos.. amazing persom.. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClmNy6VRE1YqOeBHwb3o0Yg/about) He has some recommendations, but most are actual pCI based sound cards). Anyway.. OT, any cell phone experts here?
45
I have a cell based modem that I need to disable temporarily, but I don't know what frequency it operates on. It's an AT&T $G late model modem, but is rebranded so no support from AT&T or the OEM that made the gear, the screen says it's 4G. I need the downlink frequency range, any ideas? TY Art

Virtual Com Ports for Softrock Ensemble RXTX and WSPR - Windows 10
5
Has anyone come across a solution to using com0com to create a virtual Com Port pair and make that work under Windows 10? When I try to run WSPR software linked to HDSDR running a Softrock Ensemble RXTX transceiver everything works except the CAT control though a virtual com port pair created with the free software com0com. Below is the output from WSPR when it tries to set frequency on the RXTX. I am trying to update Windows 10 to the latest and reinstall the virtual com pair using the 2.0 version or the 3.0 version of com0com. A few newbie questions....please
7
Hello I just joined this group and I hope that my current, very minimal SDR knowledge level does not embarrass me for too long.... My first step into SDR....I just purchased a Ensemble III kit from a ham that never built it. While awaiting the kit, I thought I would focus on the software portion. I am hoping for recommendations on which software to use with this receiver. I am running a 10 year old laptop and Windows 7. I checked out HDSDR and wonder, the visible tunable portion of the spectrum, i.e. 40 meters, is only about 50kHz at a time (i.e. 7.000-7.047 etc.). Is this typical? The typical online SDR can be zoomed way out to the full coverage of the receiver. It would be nice to zoom out to see the entire ham band selected. Any advice on the above would be most appreciated. Thanks. ka8gef

Calibration Softrock v8.3
5
#sdrconsole
Hi guys, Today I did the following calibration. I am using SDR-Console software with a Softrock v8.3 with 40/80m filter. A minivna with 60 dB attenuator was used for frequency calibration. My correction was 29.5 ppm at 7.17 MHz. I tuned a weak signal on AM and increased the softrock driver gain from minimum upwards until no increase in snr was noticed. The softrock gain was -25 dB after adjustment. In sdr-console I needed to set the IF gain to -25 dB so that the peak of the signal from the generator read -60 dBm peak in sdr console. I was using a 60 dB resistive attenuator. Hopefully I got the logic right. Listening to a real signal from one of my antennas seems odd. The noise floor is at -145 dBm. A 5&7 sideband channel seems to peak at -125 dBm but it is audible. Is my procedure and thinking correct or does someone have a better procedure for calibration? -- Thanks Steve M0ZEH

Combined Softrock Lite II for a 9MHz IF panadaptor?

16 June 2020 Am I right in thinking a Combined Lite II with a crystal on 11.98MHz and used with a 98kHz sound card will work as a panadaptor for an FTdx-5000 with a factory 9MHz IF output socket? Thanks. 2E0ILY -- Best regards, Chris mailto:chris@...

Ensemble RXTX mods: All band expansion
2
Hi Roger, Thank you very much for the detailed notes on the 160-10 Meter RXTX Modification for the Ensemble RXTX. Having made the changes necessary, I can now get around 1 W on all bands. This will be useful for the input to the 20W amplifier I have lying around. Cheers, Ravi/M0RVI -- I'm here to add more value to the world than I'm using up.

SoftRock RXTX - Winding Transformers T3 and T4 With Proper Phasing
17
Hello, I am trying to finish building a SoftRock RXTX for 40, 30, and 20 meters. I have all the components installed and have passed all of the checks except for the power output. I am reading a few millivolts of output and my power meter reads zero watts when I key the radio. I have double-checked all of the component values and they are correct. All of the continuity checks test fine. I read that a reason for low or no power output could be that Transformers T3 and/or T4 primary and secondary windings are not in phase. How do I wind each of the transformers so that each of their primary and secondary windings are in phase? I understand that the transformers do not need to be in phase with each other, Each transformer's primary and secondary windings need to be in phase within each transformer. Thanks in advance for any help. Tate N3BXZ
