kb9yig retirement

The message below has been posted on the fivedash.com home page.

I want to thank everyone who has built or used SoftRock radios, all of those who have helped others in the group troubleshoot their builds or software setups, and those who contributed to the design in the early years. I especially want to thank those who made firmware and software contributions so that the SoftRock hardware would do a useful function.

It has made my day each time I read one of your messages of success with or enjoyment from your SoftRock Radio.

I currently have 48 SoftRock RX Ensemble II HF kits and two built RX Ensemble II HF boards listed for sale on the fivedash.com web site. These are the last SoftRock boards I have available, and once they are sold, Five Dash will close. Unfortunately, due to changes in customs rules over the past few years, I am only able to ship to addresses in the United States.

Thank you again for your support of the SoftRock radio kits over the years.

Tony Parks, KB9YIG

Congratulations, Tony, on a well-deserved retirement. I have thoroughly
enjoyed working with you and on your kits. It is a bittersweet moment:
sweet, because you are leaving on top; bitter because ham radio will miss
you and your contributions in advancement of the hobby. If they built
niches in the museum of amateur radio history, you'd be a shoo-in to get
one of prominence.

Tony,

thanks a lot for all the kits and joy you passed onto us fellow HAMs.

I have built two RXTX ensembles, one RX ensemble, one Omnia (derivative of RXTX ensemble). I have built a QDX recently which is inspired by your work as well.

Enjoy your retirement and 73,

Hi Tony,

I want to thank you for the pleasure I have had from all the SoftRock's you have designed!
You start a new phase in your life, I did that also this year, and I hope you come across many happy years.

Fred Krom,
73, pe0fko.

Let me add my thanks to you, Tony, and to all of the "support" team. I
have built and used the Ensemble II HF and VHF kits and enjoyed great
success with them. I have since switched to the Mac Mini computer and as
soon as I can get the control program to run the Softrocks on it, I will
continue to use them.

Wishing you the best in retirement.

Tony, just adding my “Thanks!”, for your contribution to our hobby, with designs, and construction practices, well done. You and your associates provided my first introduction to SDR. After hours of enjoyment and relaxation constructing a number of your kits, and tuning in to the short waves, and long ones, I still have a couple to work on should I find time and inspiration to do so.

Congrats and enjoy your retirement.

Tony,

Thank you for all your work designing the SoftRock radios and making them
available as kits. You got a lot of us started in SDRs!

It was a Softrock RX/TX Ensemble that launched me into building. I’d been licensed for maybe 2 years when I took the plunge on the kit and learned to solder. When that little rig came to life, I realized what amateur radio was supposed to be all about.

The little board still features as a centerpiece in my lab/bench/shack, and I am still fond of it.

Thank you, Tony. You are responsible for getting me started in this amazing avocation. I wish you well, congratulations on your retirement.

Dear Tony,

I like to add our very best wishes to you for producing the many successful softrock designs over the years.

As SDR-Kits we enjoyed contributing to your softrock design, first of all withthe QRP2000 Si570 VFO, making the softrock RX full frequency and multiband, then followed by the very first design of the softrock RXTX transceiver kit.
I like to thank you for accepting these contributions into your product line.
I like to mention the contributors on this side of the pond; Tom Baier DG8SAQ for the first QRP2000 design and firmware, John Law G8BTR (sk) and Alan Rowe M0PUB for their work in the RXTX hardware and firmware. Special thanks to Fred Krom PE0FKO for providing Driver support including Amateur Radio Certificate for Driver installation and so many others!!
I am sure we all can say we had lots of fun and satisfaction!
As SDR-kits we finally retired the QRP2000 kit at end of 2021. Getting hold of si570 chips was becoming impossible, whilst the 570 has been completely overtaken by the newer Si5351 designs.

Tony, we wish you all the very best in retirement!

Tony,

Thank you for your great contributions to our hobby. A 40-30-20 RXTX was my introduction to the world of SDRs. Many hours were spent learning how to set up and effectively use my RXTX in CW Mode. A modification engineered by members of this forum allowed me to use my RXTX in CW Mode with HDSDR utilizing semi-break-in with a real time side tone, making it very useful during many CW events.

My 15-17-10 RXTX has been sitting here patiently waiting for this new sunspot cycle to mature so that I can put it to work.

Enjoy your retirement and your place in the history of ham radio,

73,
Jody - K3JZD

Tony,

Wishing you the best, a huge thank you for your job for the hobby, but not
only... i learned SDR software programming with your kits, more than 10
years ago.... and that is now my day job.

Tony,

Thank you for all that you have done. Your kits introduced me to SDR. It
was real thrill to work a guy in Greece with my RXTX 6.3 using PSK31 and a
vertical made out of electrical conduit. Enjoy retirement.

As many have said: Thank you Tony!

When I had the opportunity to do the harmonic measurements on the early RXTX Ensemble for you about 10 years ago, I was totally hooked! To this day, the RXTX (three of them) is my staple BPSK31 radio. With it and a wire antenna, I have worked ZL3TRR in Rolleston, NZ, from MA, which has been the biggest thrill of my QRP life.

Like so many clever things in the world of engineering: "the solution is obvious, after the fact". You pioneered what hobbyists could achieve for pocket change.

That contribution is truly worth a note in the history of ham radio.

Brent DeWitt, AB1LF

Hi Tony,
In 2015 it was fivedash.com site that returned me to radio amateur after a 20 years of QRT. I spent a year to build a construction with 3 RxTx, PA 10W, 2 tranfrormer PS units, switched LPFs, switched USB hub, 2 soundcards and a speaker module. I made thousands of QSOs with it, tried to work /M with it (added a 13.V power supply board). Even took part in RDA contest in 2017 as R1CF/P with this homemade transceiver.
It is still operational, and can be used if necessary.
Thank you very much - your kits brought me back to HAM life. You did a great job, created a community that helped me a lot in building the first RxTx.
73!

Happy Retirement? Tony.
I was thinking Flex 1000 but also taking my time considering the cost.
When googling to find out all about the Flex I came across the Softrock and that started a pleasant and more affordable journey.

Although I've moved on to DDC/DUC SDR's there is still a happy rememberance of SR's.

I built the SRv6.3, RXTX kits and spin-offs such as the SR63ng and UHFSR and currently testing a SR63ng + Mobo v4.3.4 I haven't used in may be a decade and it's still live.
73 ... Sid.
