help needed for getting RX Ensemble II running in Ubuntu 18.04?

It's been a long time since I used my RX Ensemble II, but I used Linrad on
my computer. It's the best one for pulling out weak signals below the noise
floor and has the best noise blankers. It has a learning curve; but if you
don't mind reading and installing it from source, it's worth the time.

Just Google *Linrad*.

I was using LM 18.3, BTW, based on Ubuntu. And ignore the asterisks around Linrad.

ShinySDR by Kevid Reid might fit your needs. I have not tried it, but it looked as simple as you can get.

Ignore the messages, they appear every time quisk is started. A short explanation is that it checks for stuff that doesn't exist ... we call it "Just Noise" generated by the program.

What versions of quisk and Ubuntu? You mention an old Ubuntu, trouble with that is not only the OS but applications develop at pace so that old and new can become incompatible.
In your case it seems there isn't a compatibility problem.

Newer versions of quisk use the CONFIG tab rather than the old ~/quisk_conf.py file. These later versions write and use a ~/quisk_settings.json file.

If the bands are not switching it suggests that a fixed frequency Softrock may be configured.

Like with this gentleman, however, I am getting very similar error messages like he does at the bottom of his page:

jon@jon-Dell-PC:~$ python /home/jon/SDR/quisk/quisk
ALSA lib pcm.c:2495:(snd_pcm_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2495:(snd_pcm_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2495:(snd_pcm_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_route.c:867:(find_matching_chmap) Found no matching channel map
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
jack server is not running or cannot be started
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock

I can start Quisk, hear CW, but that's about it. I do get visual graphs and when I try and switch bands, it does sound like it's changing but no matter what frequency I try and change to in Quisk, everything stays the same and I hear the same CW.

I was really hoping to get this working on my Ubuntu system. I lack a traditional shortwave receiver at present, and I am in the process of trying to get a 20 meter QRP transceiver working, but I need to at least hear it while I'm troubleshooting which was why I had hope to get the SDR working in Ubuntu. If I can't, I'll have to put one of my unused desktops into action and install it all on XP. Just hoped I would have to as I'm very limited on space at the current time.

Any thoughts on helping me troubleshoot this would be welcome. N8MDP, although getting similar error messages as I did, said he solved them but he didn't share how. Thanks in advance for your help.
