RXTX Transmit

I just got me RXTX Saturday. I am having issues getting it working. I didn't find clear instructions on how to get PTT working. Tony Parks said that the CW key could be used, but I couldn't get that to work. I read I could use an RS232 interface, but my PC doesn't have one, so I would need to get a RS 232 USB cable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I compared the RXTX in receive this AM to my Icom 720A and I found that it is suffering from splatter from other stations that I did not observe last night. Any suggestions on how to improve that also would be greatly appreciated.

Howard,

What Softrock? Has it actually got a COM port PTT?
What software are you using?

Splatter is never a problem except if stations are actually too wide.. How are you using it?

I bought the rxtx v6.3 transceiver. I tried using HSDR and Rocky software. I don't know how it has a functioning PTT, that is what I am asking for help with. I can't find any documents that specifically document how to get that part of it working.

The PTT is through the USB connection

Oh, and you need the PE0FKO driver. See notes on fivedash site.

After you install the driver , there is a drop down menu in HDSDR to enable
the transmitter function.

Howard,

And this is the switch-tuned version? As described here?

I guess Rocky is best for CW, I think that has COM port PTT.
Yes, you will need a USB adaptor. I'd suggest one with an FTDI chip.

HDSDR may also be used with the SRLite DLL.

Once at Xmit button appeared in HSDR. It has not reappeared. There are PTT options there but not for the RXTX.
I do not have the switch tuned version, and I don't physically see the BPF modules on my board. I will looked at the schematic and see a LPF at the input to T5. I guess I need to make that a BPF.

I have the PE0FKO driver installed.

Howard

Once at Xmit button appeared in HSDR.
Options - TX - SDR TX Support

I do not have the switch tuned version,
So it has the USB add-on. SDR-Device shows the settings?

? You should have 4 BPF and 4 PA plug-ins.

Alan:
Under Tx support I get the following choices:
Omni rig 1
Omni rig 2
Cat do HDSR
HRD

Which one should I use? I tried all to no avail.
I have RXTX Ensemble it has no modules. Filters are hard wired, you select the 3 bands you want when you order. In my case, 40/30/20. I was given parts for an external LPF for 40 as well.

Just exactly what do you want to do?
Normally you do not need any, just enable TX.

I have RXTX Ensemble
OK so it is NOT a v6.3 like shown on the link I sent. It does not help if you do not follow suggestions.

Please detail what you wish to achieve. SSB with a mic? CW? Data?

Look at the Test page here does it react as described?

Alan:
I am trying to get SSB working. I now have Xmit working, thanks for your help. I have a v6.3. I thought I had to check one of the items in the box, so it didn't work. I guess I was thinking too much.
Anyway, now I have xmit working, but I am looking at the output through a 40 dB pad on my Tiny SA and I see what appears to be DSB, not SSB and a very wide signal. I will get out my scope now to see if I have both I and Q going to the PC audio input. How is the xmit audio bandwidth limited? I would expect a digital LPF at 3 KHz in the I and Q audio going into the RXTX.
Also, getting back to the xmit operation, The TX button works, but is it possible to have a real PTT button?

Thanks,
Howard

Howard

I have a v6.3.
I still do not know what model you have. A v6.3 is probably over 10 years old. An Ensemble is current as you described, integrated USB, built for a limited number of bands.

Anyway, now I have xmit working, but I am looking at the output through a 40 dB pad on my Tiny SA and I see what appears to be DSB, not SSB and a very wide signal.
I'm not sure but -40dB does not sound enough.
It needs a stereo input.
HDSDR TX bandwidth is adjustable but default settings are optimum, never known anyone to change it.
Look at my web pages, TX IQ swap may be needed. To setup that and IQ balance you need a RX.
The spacebar operates PTT, I think it is possible to configure a COM port PTT but have never tried.

Alan:
I forgot to mention that in receive, I need to swap I and Q for 40 meters and not 20 meters.
I will be working on my boat today, and will probably not do anything with this rig until tomorrow.

I looked more closely at the transmit spectrum, and I see significant energy +/- 50 KHz from the carrier. This seems to be coming out of my sound card. Of course, for audio, one would never hear this, but for a RF modulating signal, it is a problem. I looked at the RXTX schematic, and the audio amps are lowpass filtered at about 150 KHz. Since only 3 KHz is needed for this Hilbert transformed audio, why so much bandwidth? If I reduced it to 10 KHz, it would help reduce what the spurs while keeping the bandwidth high enough to not effect the phase, which is critical. Am I missing something?

The 150 kHz bandwidth would allow viewing a panadapter bandwidth of 300kHz if the audio card could sample at 150ks/s. The actual bandwidth is less, but people routinely use 96ks/s audio cards to see a panadapter bandwidth of 192kHz.

Howard, you are not missing something.
See
TX op amp filter mod.pdf <>
This shows spectrum analyzer displays before and after addition of a 20 kHz LPF on the TX opamps.

Roger,

I had forgotten that. I had made Leif's simple "mod" using my D44s at full output and attenuators.

I have recently changed things with a new computer. Only room for one internal card and no reasonably priced multichannel card makes USB sound necessary.
I have just checked my LF Softrock and I see no sign of the effect with a Xonar U3 device. 16bit 48KHz.
Similarly my Softrock 6.3 and 6.1 RXTXs show OK using a Maya44 again at 16 bits 48KHz.
I used an Airspy HF+ and HDSDR to check. The noise floor remained level.
I am thinking later sound devices are free of this problem?

I wonder what Howard is using?

Roger & Alan:
Thanks for the confirmation. I will mod it.

All,
I have two old Tony Parks RXTX ensemble kits, KB9YIG, I would like to
assemble them. Someone could tell me where I will find instructions for
assemblies, tests and calibrations, etc.
