My sorted collection of the old Yahoo group files from January 2019, prior to some proposed pruning at that time, is still available for download from Mediafire...

Re: unbuilt Softrocks for sale etc.

Brian,

I may be interested in the kits depending on pricing. I am almost done
building my first RXTX at this moment. Please let me know what you have and
what pricing you are looking for.

Re: Broken Ensemble RX v.1

Hi Alan

thank you for your reply and all the helpful info.

Having read Bob's guide it seems you only need a HV programmer to reset the fuse bits on a used device.

So will buy some new '85s and try to fix it with a simple parallel programmer first.

Re: Broken Ensemble RX v.1

That works, but no graphics. Same in Google's cache.

But found it here with the graphics archived May 19 last year...

Re: Broken Ensemble RX v.1

You can get it via the internet archive:

Nick,

No, a long time since I did that!
I've got quite a few programmed ATT45s, not sure if I have any spare 85s.
Copied below from an old web page, might give some clues but we are talking XP. And LPT for my programmer

I have probably got the files on some old drive, maybe even Bob's PDF but it will take some searching.
Looked on the Wayback Machine but does it save files did not seem to?

REPROGRAMMING See for Bob's definitive guide. For the record the first thread started here:- shows one programmer to reprogram it. My version:- . The software is Windows command line, I used W98, To get it to work on XP or Vista you need to find giveIO.sys on the web (eg but in my case LOADDRV.exe did not work, I got an error message, "invalid service name", I just put giveIO.sys into the same folder as avrpp.exe and avrpp worked properly.

This is a self extracting exe file that puts the individual files in a folder. It still needs installing. Here is just one link that shows how to make a command window easier to use. . Once you have the command prompt in the avrpp folder the command "avrpp file.hex" loads the new file. To set the fuse bits on a new chip use "avrpp -fl11100001" and "avrpp -fh1011101" Thanks Bob! Not necessary for reprogramming one that has already had a prior version of the software Other programmers are available. -ATtiny45/ Removing the fuse from ATTiny45, restores the AVR to be able to use low voltage programmers.

Does anyone have a copy of Bob G8VOI's document "A Beginners Guide to Programming the ATMEL ATtiny 45 and 85" they can send me, or post to Files on this this group?

Tried here

but get a "Connection timed out" error".

Broken Ensemble RX v.1

Plugged this RX in today and found the auto BPF has stopped working.

Testing with usbsoftrock and a 'scope showed that the PB4 pin is stuck high - it appears to be shorted to Vcc.

Otherwise the ATTiny85 appears to work...

$ usbsoftrock status
Version : 15.12
USB SerialID: PE0FKO-0
Startup Freq: 7.050000 (x 4.00)
Xtall Freq : 114.280000
Smooth Tune : 3500 PPM
Si570 I2C : 55 Hex
BPF Enabled: 1
Band BPF Si570
---------- --- -----------------
0.0.. 4.0 0 (F - 0.00) * 1.00000
4.0.. 8.0 1 (F - 0.00) * 1.00000
8.0..16.0 2 (F - 0.00) * 1.00000
16.0.. 3 (F - 0.00) * 1.00000

Removed U1 from it's socket and all voltages at the socket are correct.

What's the easiest way to get a replacement for U1 in the UK?

Nick

Re: New website

Ben,
Thanks.
It appears that programming the ATtiny through an Arduino is a common thing.
I did something like this some time ago with an STM32 microcontroller. I don't remember how exactly, other than one can download additions to the arduino IDE in windows. I may not get time to try it in the next month or two. I ordered some ATtinys from China, but delivery time is very long.

C. Continued.
Yes that is a good idea, the quanties are quite limited on attiny85 chips at the moment. I have found a source and can list them separately. As soon as I prove out my programmer, I'll add the ic only to the website.

Thank you!

Re: New website

Thank you for your feedback,
A. The website is hosted by square up, I am not sure what they base it on, but I am quite restricted as to what I can do with it. I had a website with WordPress with softrock40, but everything I did they wanted me to upgrade to more features, tiers, and add-ons. They would have charged me more per year than five dash's annual sales. They then would not release the URL to port it to the new site. I will look into alternatives over the winter
B.I will get with Tony for the information on the connectors and the board mods. I have a modified Rxtx board here if pics would be of assistance. I'll check the rx boards over the weekend and post more early next week.
C. Check pe0fko website for code on the attiny. You can also Google "attiny softrock"for info on building a programmer if you have an old PC with parallel port. I just purchased an easyavr7 board to program them for the kits, I still have to prove out the fuse bits, but it looks good so far

Re: New website

Ben,
I am happy that you will be continuing availability of softrocks. I used the simple ones for years with various research projects.
Several comments:
A) your new softrock website is through microsoft outlook. I did not realize that making an account there would affect my regular microsoft account which is used to log into several computers.
I can't seem to search for softrock without logging in.
Maybe one should avoid microsoft?

B) I have a recent RX ensemble II board. The layout for the 3.5 mm jack is different than on any of the boards shown by WB5RVZ or on the RX III.
I want to clone part of the board to use the I and Q lines for my homebrew transmitter, and would like to know about part layout vs board patterns and stability of this issue overall.
I did a lot of web searches and found most of the other connectors to fit.

C) can one buy programmed ATtiny chips with the latest updates?

Regards,
David Underwood

Hi Tony

Many thanks for your amazing efforts to introduce Ham Radio to SDR. Your management of Soft Rock Kits and fantastic back up service when I got it wrong is exemplary. So Many thanks Tony and have a good retirement.

Hi Ben,
Wonderful.
I would be pleased to provide whatever help I can when you are working on the details of your prototype.
Thanks,

Hello Ben,

Re. your plan to offer "a heavily modified RXTX board and external parts to make a 220m, 630M, and 160M radio".
I had developed just such a design, which works very well.
See for photos, details of the circuit and filters are available in the "Articles" section.
Perhaps you would like to use that design?

I would also like to come up with something for the 2 meter band.
I am working on building a coil winder for screwdriver antennas, maybe something on that in the future.
