Monthly Reminder When: Wednesday, February 1, 2023 View Event Description: Discussion of the design and construction of small model railroad layouts. PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT ACCEPT SALES AND WANTS ADVERTS - EBAY IS THERE FOR THEM. This group is intended for the average model railroader who does not have an entire basement or even an entire room to devote to a layout. Here we will discuss smaller layouts -- table-tops, shelf layouts, micro-layouts, modules and modular layouts -- and how they can be designed and built for enjoyment and modelling satisfaction. The above is an example borrowed from Carl Arendt's excellent site http://carendt.com/scrapbook/linkindex/index.html and also at http://carendt_backup.gully.org/ Due to restrictions in file space, 4 separate groups had been set up for the sharing of design files and photos. /g/sldfiles /g/sldfiles2 /g/sldfiles3 Due to space restrictions on groups.io photos from the Small Layout Design yahoo group are located at the following /g/small-layout-design-photos By the way, we do not tolerate trolls or flaming

Layout Preview: Central Coast RR Festival – Ron Hamley
Layout Preview: Central Coast RR Festival – Ron Hamley This is a detailed, compact N scale U-shaped layout measuring 4”x4”, 2’x2’, 3’x7’. The mainline runs thirty-eight feet. Ron models California’s coastal mountain area in the 1950s to early 1960s. Scenery includes oak forests, grasslands, small streams and an ocean harbor. Many trees are handmade. He runs a logging train plus freight and passenger trains. There is a small operating yard, freight station and engine house. Structures include a sawmill, a town with multi-story buildings and harbor area buildings. Power is DC. Check out Ron’s layout videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLyzYO81_jM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKWWewhOgF0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSaoT_Uklpk This is just one of over thirty model and garden railroads that will be open during the Central Coast Railroad Festival on October 6 – 9 in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties. Here is a link to the list with owners/railroad names, schedules, locations and descriptions: https://ccrrf.com/2022/Model-Layout-Tour-65.pdf This link now includes three area maps showing the general location of all the railroads. Please do not visit the railroads outside of their posted schedules. The tour schedule is subject to change so please check back as the Festival approaches. Layout Preview: Central Coast RR Festival – Anthony Harris
Layout Preview: Central Coast RR Festival – Anthony Harris At this stop you can see three separate table top model railroad layouts. The first is a Z-scale that is 3' x 5' and can run two trains. Next is an N-scale that is 3.5' x 6' and can run two trains. And last is another N-scale that is 4' x 7.5' and can run three trains. All the layouts contain tunnels, bridges, and changes in track elevation to create interest. The layouts and rolling stock are a mix of older and modern equipment. Power is DC. Each layout has no turnouts. The layouts are meant for railfanning as opposed to doing any switching operating sessions. Here is a video of one of the layouts: https://youtu.be/MC0TumnuTgA This is just one of over thirty model and garden railroads that will be open during the Central Coast Railroad Festival on October 6 – 9 in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties. Archer Fine Transfers and decals 4
Archer Fine Transfers has made rivet decals, "eye" decals as well as many other surface products. I received an email that they are closing their business. You may want to take a look at their remaining stock before they are gone. I have no affiliation with the company. Just a satisfied user. Smitty

Last Call For Model Railroads - Central Coast Railroad Festival (CA)
Last Call For Model Railroads - Central Coast Railroad Festival (CA) The Central Coast Railroad Festival returns this year to San Luis Obispo County and northern San Barbara County on October 7-9 (Friday-Sunday). As in past years I will organize a tour of model railroads and garden railroads. Last year we had twenty-nine railroads on the tour. This is the final call for layout owners to participate. Participating in a layout tour is a great way to share your work and meet your fellow model and garden railroaders. You’ve probably worked hard on your railroad so you might as well get some recognition from people who will appreciate your efforts. We are only asking owners to be open for four or more hours on just one day. Additional days and hours are at the owner’s option, including "early bird" showings on Thursday, October 6. And we are asking owners in Santa Maria and areas south of Santa Maria to be open only on Sunday, October 9. All you need to do is operate your trains. I will do all the planning and publicity, as I have done for sixty-one previously tours since 2006, including nine previous tours for the Central Coast Railroad Festival. This will be a free, self-guided tour. No buses will be used. If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please contact me (OFF LIST by e-mail) in the next several days if you are interested so we can add your railroad to the tour. Once you have been added to the tour, I will contact you to set your day(s) and hours. Thank you. T-Trak & small layouts 12
Has anyone built any T-TRAK modules that can function as a self contained small layout when not connected to a wider T-TRAK system? T-TRAK is a N Gauge/Scale modular system based on Kato Unitracks in multiples of 310mm (about 1 foot) with two tracks running along the front of the module. Self contained modules generally come in multiples of 1x, 2x, 3x and 4x the basic length (known as singles, doubles, triples and quads). Multiple boards can be put together to create even longer scenes. The boards are 330mm (about 1' 1") front to back, with approximately the front third taken up with the two main running lines. I've seen a wide range of modules from the US, Europe and Japan but would be interested to hear if anyone on this group has built anything that is capable of being operable on its own. I'm currently planning using a pair of doubles to make an Inglenook style shunting puzzle that could function as a loco shed or freight depot with a change of buildings. Steven B.

Coved Backdrops: Yes Or No? 6
Coved Backdrops: Yes Or No? I was looking at a small switching layout Bob Smaus is building which includes a coved backdrop. I recall Bob mentioning that he was surprised more modelers did not cove their backdrops. In my case, I kept the corners but obscured them with structures and other distractions. What about you folks? Do you use coved corners on your layouts? If so, what is the technique you used? If not, why not? What alternatives have you found for coved corners? Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA
