Coved Backdrops: Yes Or No?

Coved Backdrops: Yes Or No?

I was looking at a small switching layout Bob Smaus is building which includes a coved backdrop. I recall Bob mentioning that he was surprised more modelers did not cove their backdrops.

In my case, I kept the corners but obscured them with structures and other distractions.

What about you folks?

Do you use coved corners on your layouts? If so, what is the technique you used?

If not, why not? What alternatives have you found for coved corners?

Hi Bob,

?

I coved the corner on my L-shaped switching layout.

?

I made mine from 1/8” thick Masonite.? The backdrop stands 12” tall above track level.

?

?

Thanks,

Damin.

Our local ShopRite has huge landscape backdrops above the refrigerated area.? There is no coving, but a large tree folded in the corner.? It looks fine.? For me, curving the corners is not worth the effort.

It's not a lot of effort with the right material.? Styrene comes in 4x8 sheets in various thicknesses.? 1/16" or less thick bends easily.? One sheet makes 16', 2' tall, or 24', 16' tall.

Bob,

For the layout I am currently building, I created backdrops in Adobe Photoshop and had them printed on polyethylene banner material at Office Depot. These are held in place with double stick tape along the top edge of the banner material. For coved corners, I needed something smooth to support them around the corner. I used sheet metal held to the walls with a couple of drywall screws. In the future, if necessary, it will be easy to remove everything and patch the screw holes. See photo below.

For a previous portable NTRAK-compatible layout, I bought a remnant roll of sheet vinyl flooring glued it to Masonite for the straight runs with the bottom side out. (It was a gray paper surface and took paint well.) This made self-supporting coves at the corners. It also meant that I could fold the entire backdrop up for transport.

The sheet vinyl method would also work well for a more permanent layout set up.

Hi, wherever feasible, I prefer to use rounded corners on my backscenes, just personal preference, that's all. Attached are a couple of photos of my latest micro, Tutherside, for your consideration.

Thanks,
Martin.
