ADMIN Transfers Appear To Have Been Successful
2
At this time most of the SLD related groups have been successfully transfered over to groups.io. I am still waiting to get SLDFiles moved and some files from the original small layout design group did not get transferred and I am waiting on that. 开云体育 will function in the same fashion as yahoo groups but is more dependable wrt to accessing information. There are some other options that I am looking at activating but I need to take a longer look at them first. Due to restrictions in file space, 4 separate groups had been set up for the sharing of design files and photos. /g/sldfiles (still waiting on transfer) /g/sldfiles2 /g/sldfiles3 Due to space restrictions on groups.io photos from the Small Layout Design yahoo group are located at the following /g/small-layout-design-photos The above groups are for files and photos only, i.e. no messages allowed. Please continue to post on this main group. Take a look around and become familiar with our new home and let me know what thoughts you have. Bruce Wilson Group Owner

Ideas for a photo layout
10
Over the years, I built several small layouts, some of them even featured by Carl Arendt, but also some non-operational dioramas for exhibitions and to be used for photo scenes. Lately, model railway photography has become a major issue in my hobby, also by arranging temporary photo scenes that are combined with virtual backgrounds (see http://www.joernpachl.de/model_rr.htm). I'm just thinking about a new layout project. What I have in mind is to build a small layout with the main objective to be used for photo scenes. It can be operational, but not necessarily. Most layouts and dioramas are designed in a way that they should be viewed from just one side. What I'm looking for is an idea of how to design a layout in a way that it can be viewed from different angles providing the viewer with quite different impressions of that scene. Maybe similar like the famous designers of old English parks where you just walk a short distance but get a completely different picture of the landscape. Is anybody aware of of any articles dealing with that aspect of layout design? Joern

What is a "small layout" (was RE: [small-layout-design] Ideas for a photo layout)
Art, Interestingly (at least to me) is that when Jim Fitzgerald and Ben Davis were first forming NTRAK in the early 1970's, their criteria for sizing the typical module was a requirement it had to fit in the back seat of a VW bug - hence the 24" x 48" size. And 24" x 48" is also a good fit for the less-plebian Lincoln Town Car! I think the "back-seat-test" is still a good criteria for defining a "small layout". This size reange gives plenty of room for several scenes in N scale I had a module set consisting of three 30" x 48" units that stacked for transport- very lightweight construction, but bulky. Legs can be folding or removable for transport, or set up to sit on a table. As for scenic dividers, I might lean toward high scenery in the middle - grove of trees, cliff, bridge or row of buildings - rather than a backdrop down the center. Backdrop could be movable for photo purposes. Are you leaning more towards rural, industrial, small town, city, logging/mining, dockside, or some mix of these? -ArtP

Double slip switches
2
Mention of double slips in the Marklin C track thread got me to thinking. Which produces questions......... Is tha a doubleslip in the Ness Street yard image in the group header? Are there other popular small layout plans with double slips? I'm sitting on a nice little HOstd double slip that did yeoman service on the now greatly modified layout my kids played with. I'm thinking ahead about puting it to use on a small layout that will be entirely a wharf scene. Linear, light weight and easy to srore high on a wall on simple shelf brackets. Ed Weldon

Transferring Underway
6
You probably have noticed by now that the Small Layout Design group has been transferred to groups.io. We made the move to get away from the uncertainty of yahoo's future and the problems in general yahoo groups is experiencing. The members and all of the files have been moved to the new group, however, at this time none of the photos have been transferred due to space limitations on groups.io but I am working on moving them to another group. If successful you will get a message saying you are a member of the photos group. I am still working on transferring the SLD files groups but need some changes from the current owner(s) to upgrade my moderator status to complete the transfers. Although the SLD file groups are listed publicly I will not be approving any members who apply to those groups until such time I can complete the transfers or find another way to move the content. Enjoy Bruce Wilson Group Owner

PS on Build-A-Dream photo album
I resized all the photos to 72ppi and a maximum dimension of 960 pixels before uploading to the album in the “Photos” section. This is a good viewable size and keeps file sizes small. Tom K.

ADMIN Update on Transfer
I noticed that some of the files did not get transferred over from the yahoo group. I have sent the request to have the remaining files moved over. For those asking to join any of the SLDFiles groups please be patient. The transfers are in process and you will get a notice when they are complete. At this time any requests to join will stay in the pending folder until the groups are transferred. Your patience is appreciated. Thanks Bruce Wilson SLD Owner

Disposing of NTRAK module
I am disposing of one of my N scale modules, this one an NTRAK module as seen in N scale magazine and at the National N Scale Convention in Sacramento, California. In addition to the three (yes, three) through standard gauge mainlines, it features a self-contained Nn3 quarry railway. It is currently listed on eBay at item no. 123351709145 Local pick-up only in San Francisco. Tom K.

Ideas for Marklin C-track mini or micro layouts?
5
I was in Lidl today, and found this (ignore the Polish, it's the picture that matters): https://allegro.pl/kolejka-elektryczna-marklin-29362-h0-i7433318037.html Needless to say, i paid less than this auction is selling for (closer to $50USD than the near-$70 of this one) I bought it on a whim, in part because it struck me as a reasonable price, but also because it uses DCC of sorts, and the cars are compatible with my Piko trains... So, my question is. Does anybody here know of any Marklin C-track layouts that would make something like an Inglenook, or somesuch? I could just make a generic Inglenook, but was hoping for something sliightly more. Also, what does anybody know about this track system? any experience? TIA -Jon Glass

Central Coast RR Festival - Show Your Railroad
Do you have an operating model railroad? Why not share itwith others? Read on. The Central Coast Railroad Festival returns this year to California's San Luis Obispoand northern San Barbara Countieson October 5-7 (Friday-Sunday). As in past years I will organize a tour of model railroadsand garden railroads. Last year we had twenty-eight railroads on the tour. If you have anoperating railroad I would like you to consider participating in the tour. Participating in a layout tour is a great way to share yourwork and meet your fellow model and garden railroaders. You’ve probably workedhard on your railroad so you might as well get some recognition from people whowill appreciate your efforts. We are only asking railroad owners to be open for four ormore hours on one day. Additional days and hours are at the owner’s option, including "early bird" showings on Thursday, October 4. And we areasking owners in Santa Maria and areas south of Santa Maria to be openonly on Sunday. All you need to do is operate your trains. I will do all theplanning and publicity, as I have done for fifty-six previously tours since2006, including seven previous tours for the Central Coast Railroad Festival. This will be a free, self-guided tour. No buses will beused. If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please contact me OFF LIST in the next several weeks if you are interested so we can addyour railroad to the tour. Once you have been added to the tour I will contactyou in August to set your days and hours. And if you know someone who has an operating railroad, please share this message with them. Thank you. Progress on Traction Layout
Here're some construction photos of my new O hi-rail portable layout using Super Streets track--the larger section is 2x4' with mock-ups of a segment of the mile-long Superior Viaduct in Cleveland and the Schmulbach Brewery in Wheeling; the smaller bolt-on 16x36" extension makes for a folded dogbone for continuous running with an industrial switchback and some manual switches just to keep you on your toes. The frame is box girder aluminum stock with a Homosote overlay. It should be sweet once the track and scenery are done and the street and bridge catenary are up...the trolleys are a big hit with the grandkids! John McGarrity, Charleston WV

Copyright
2
"The problem with Flickr is they have to be public.. Some of the images in the files section are copyright (e.g. scans from magazines)." Copyright depends on each nation's laws. In the USA everything you write, every photo or image you create is copyright automatically by you. This is the brave new world of the Berne Convention. You may transfer some rights to an online entity when you accept their terms and conditions. If you attach the appropriate public domain Creative Commons symbol to your work that can effectively remove the copyright. Trouble with that is you have to figure out how to do that with your image files or add the right text to your documents. (I'm still working on all that) I have this dark suspicion that someday your automatic ownership by copyright will be sufficient reason for online sources to automatically "reject" effectively wiping out your earthly record of most if not all creative things you have accomplished.
