Re: Anything new in Small Layouts?

Something new, at least, as far as I know is an Ikea shelf. There used to be a shelf, approximately 4'x1' that you could buy from Ikea that had drawers inside. It was discontinued, but I was at Ikea this week, and noticed they have another one.

The original shelf was raw wood, I believe, but still... I think this might make a great platform for a micro layout--Inglenook or Timesaver and such, as it even includes storage for rolling stock, power, etc. :-)

You can even buy it in a set with legs:

I believe I shall be buying this, and moving my Highland Terminal layout to it:

The past year has been very busy constructing and showing a modular Nn3 layout based on the Caspar, South Fork & Eastern Railroad. (I know, it was standard gauge, but that¡¯s modeler¡¯s license for you!) Joe DuVivier of our NorCal Nn3 group had already constructed a diorama of Jughandle Trestle on the Caspar. After he and I attended the Pacific Model Loggers¡¯ Congress meeting at Camp 18, and hearing a clinic by Jim Sabol titled ¡°Timber to Tidewater¡± we both had the idea of creating a layout showing scenes from a typical logging operation as a series of linked ¡°cameo¡± layouts (see Ian Rice¡¯s book on cameo layouts.) While the layout will eventually incorporate scenes from a ¡°landing¡± all the way to the sawmill at the confluence of Caspar Creek and the Pacific Ocean, it now includes three scenes: the Landing, the Camp and Jughandle Trestle. I built the Camp and Landing scenes between March and August 2017 and we took the layout to Denver to the National Narrow Gauge Convention (where they stuck us on a mezzanine on the other end of the convention center form the rest of the modular layouts.) Since then the layout or my two parts of it have been set up at three other events. The lighting concept developed by Joe to create strong shadows and first tried in Denver (in a temporary lash-up under an EZ-UP canopy) was so successful that we have subsequently incorporated it in ¡°lids¡± that fit over each cameo scene.

The Camp and Landing sections can be set up together and operated as a layout separate from Jughandle Trestle, or individually as a stand-alone ¡°cameo¡± layout. Each is based on a four-foot long ¡°standard¡± 12¡± wide Nn3 module, widened at the center to accommodate specific scenic features. Either one or both will fit in the back seat of my car, with the ancillaries in the trunk.

I tried several times to create a photo album and upload photos to our Yahoo Group site, but with no avail (even though I have successfully created three albums there in the past.) I finally gave up and have uploaded them to the Nikon photo sharing web site at: This album includes some plans and figures illustrating the concepts used.

I hope you enjoy these. If we ever get any of the ¡°small layout¡± group together in northern California, I can bring one or both of the scenes I have.

Always interested in what others are doing with small layouts.? I have three of them - two 2'x2' and one 2'x4'.? I'm re-doing much of the larger one.? Maybe I'll try to show one or two at the 2019 event.?

I'm always interested in what other modelers are doing. I started a small layout but have been real slow about working on it. To many projects and not enough time - and here in MI it's spring time yard/garage cleanup and that just eats up time.

Hi Ed
I am interested in your project, I hope to do something similar but not quite as large a sections to take to local shows. I am very interested in how to build the bases and scenery, needs to be lightweight.

I had a web site on Geocities and it was the easiest hosting site to use. The file manager was easy to use and the amount of free space available was more than enough for me. I've tried recreating it on a couple other hosting sites but they were just to complicated/confusing to use.

I was also a member of another Yahoo group that existed when this was still "Onelist" 20+ years ago before Yahoo ended up buying it and making it Yahoo Groups.

I know people do not like change but you have a new landlord and they are changing the lease and may raise the rent (if they do not tear it down for more luxury stuff).

That's certainly your prerogative. But before you do, log on to Yahoo
and read the new policies imposed by the new owner. I think you'll see
much of the reason people want to switch. And that's without the slowly
degrading service from Yahoo. I get my stuff as individual emails, so I
don't see some of that, but the privacy changes were enough to convince me.

I seriously suggest nothing be left behind unless you want to lose it. I honestly believe the Yahoo name will disappear very soon and so will a lot of information.

The move cannot happen soon enough.

One problem with a potential transfer is the size of the photos section on the main yahoops group exceeds the new combined? limit of 1 GB for files and photos on groups.io.? If a move is to be made the admin department would have to try and split the photos into several groups or go through and resize all of the photos to get the size down.? Currently there are about 93MB of files.

Now a problem with trying to manipulate the photos is that currently yahoops is having one of its moods and we can't access the photos to move or download them.? The only thing we can do is look at them. (All the more reason to deeps six yahoops)

It would be/is possible to transfer the group without the photos and then lock this group down so no further posting is allowed so it could serve as an archive for the photos.

You don¡¯t have to ¡°do¡± anything if the group is migrated to Groups.io After the moderator moves the group, you would obtain a notification/invitation to the group. The group did opt for a ¡° premium¡± membership with greater storage which involved a very nominal charge, which is being underwritten by one of the group members, so none of the other 900 members pays anything.
