I can't think of much from a 6"x6' shelf other than a switching
layout. From my
perspective, I'm using a 1'x6' shelf as a (HO) yard. Though if you
can widen
what you have, make the back higher and do a bunch of switchbacks
to a mine or
logging operation in N scale.

I should point out this 6"x6' is an off cut from another layout
18"x6' (I don't have the room for a 2ft wide board!" The larger
layout is (will be) a uk outline 00 dock shunting layout, so I was
looking to perhaps try something different on my off cut.
