Re: Promotional Materials for Poisoning Prevention
Hi Liam,
Thank you for your update. Now we are back in Kathmandu and tomorrow organizing a press meeting regarding our update!
Here is news coverage (in Nepali) of our successful expedition.
From the day after tomorrow, I'll be working on the execution of our poisoning project starting with designing a posters?(n=250)?and bags (n=500). Dr. Britt Bunyard - our client in this foray, has kindly helped us to recommend several poisonous mushrooms from his recent experience in Nepal.
More with the update,

Hello all! This is so exciting, I love to see the progress that is happening through collaboration on this project. I will return home on the 20th of this month, and hope to contribute however I can to project needs after that. Great work!
Sincerely,
Lily? Dear Cornelia,
Great to hear from you. Thank you for every interesting?detail.
Video Idea: Liam was describing that Dr. Devkota will be headed to villages to educate people and leave posters with them.? I suggested that someone could use a cell phone to record his presentation.? This would mean there could be a recording of him doing his educational program and then this could be dubbed and replayed for other parts of Nepal with different dialects.? Liam had mentioned that there would be a videographer traveling with Rick, so this is another possibility, however, I was trying to think of something accessible and easy.
Thank you for your suggestion. I'll try to get the best videos using cell phones and also we will produce short clips regarding discussions on mushrooms poisoning, local perception,preventive/ curative measures with local indigenous communities in the Everest Area.
Raising Funds: The North American Mycological Association (NAMA) does have affiliation with clubs in the US, Canada and Mexico.? So writing something up about the project to share with other clubs and sending it on could help raise funds for this project. We could produce and share a brief concept note on it.? LIAM# Last year we produced a similar one and better we revise and adapt to meet present purposes.
Matching Funds: ?Liam mentioned that HCSI could then do matching funds as well. Sure, we could also add some matching funds. I'm having a discussion with Rick (as now we are together in my hometown?- Pokhara, Nepal). HCSI could also find other alternative sources to bring a few more financial contributions.?
Paypal:?Sam mentioned that being able to pay HCSI by clicking on a link would be helpful.? He had to use a credit card and it was a bit cumbersome.? Liam said he should be able to make PayPal payment possible. I Hope, Liam is finding a way to make it easier.
Meeting on Wed:?to be arranged by Liam with Dr. Devkota, the two of us and I believe Rick also. Looking forward in being together on Zoom call together with Rick and you all good colleagues :-)
With kindest regards,
Shiva
Sam and I got to meet with Liam today and walk together by the Chattahoochee River.? LOVELY and fun.? So grateful for all the connections. ?

First and foremost, I'd like to thank you all very much for your contribution to Shiva's important work of helping to prevent fatal mushroom poisonings. It is great seeing your commitment to helping rural communities of Nepal and this discussion about project strategies.
On a personal note, it's also interesting to see our shared connections/geographies. I'm from North Decatur in Atlanta. Last year, my parents had a major eruption of chanterelles in their yard which was very exciting. Also, Lily, I did my undergraduate senior thesis research outside of Tarangire National Park, studying the status of a large mammal migration corridor north?of the park.
As Shiva wrote above, I will be in Atlanta this week. If anyone would like to meet on Thursday (6/9), Friday (6/10), or this coming Monday (6/13), it would be great to talk with you about the project in person.
Thank you again for your work.
Best, Liam Namaskar all! Sounds like you are working through some great ideas. If they are printed on bags/T-shirts, they will have to be printed as they will easily and quickly be worn through by the level of wear and tear that happens with primary backpacks/T-shirts. Thank you very much for your message and suggestions. I truly appreciate the idea to print the image on a collection bag. Here (looking after socio-cultural-economic situation in Nepal), it could be more better if we come up to provide school bags for students with a clear printing message Not to Eat Unknown Mushrooms (in Nepali).?
Selection of school bags than collection bags is mainly for these purposes: - In remote areas, children are forced to walk even for1-2?hrs to reach school from their settlement, and school bags help them in many ways for their comfort (plz find an attached photo which I captured while working in the field - they walk like one hour to reach school crossing all those hills and trails)
- Still, many students can not afford/get school bags - and if we add a little more amount to "collection Bags" we could hand over bags to children. (Attached: After we handover bags to needy students- 2 years back in one village)
- Alternatively, we could also print some collection bags as you suggested - which we could give (together with posters) to some real collectors or people with rich mycological knowledge as a token of appreciation. So that, s/he could convey a message to locals making them aware of poisonous mushrooms.
These are just my ideas.
Indeed, we need some more money to undertake these actions. The price for a school bag with mushroom notes and Clubs' logos comes to about 17-22 USD + Transportation to reach remote areas. It would be really nice if you approach NAMA or other clubs for this purpose. I'll also discuss it with Rick while in Nepal and he is also very much interested to support needy children. Let's start figuring out the possibility to make it happen, Cornelia and Sam??.
Excitingly looking forward to having your thoughts on it!

Of course this would be more expensive than posters, but I think if we write to the general NAMA membership, we could get more people and clubs donating funds.? I think the image could also be printed on a t-shirt that could be a popular item in Nepal and elsewhere as well promoting the project.

A possible backpack issue
Liam, thank you for putting together our meeting today on Zoom with Dr. Devkota & Rick Silber. ?Nice meeting you Rick and exciting that you are on the ground in Nepal.
We just talked with one of our dear mushroom friends, Elinoar Shavit, who has traveled extensively throughout the world. ?At every opportunity, she interfaces with indigenous populations to learn about ?their mushroom traditions. ?She's published in the Springer volume on truffles.
We would like to think this is not true,, but she brought up the point that if the items we hand out are considered valuable in any way, then they will most likely be traded away for cash.? We who live in the US, having been more sheltered, possibly could not even picture this scenario, but it is a valid concern and something she has seen happen in other countries.?
She was very much in favor of the laminated plastic tri-folds similar to what Daniel Winkler produces.? It is good to hear that the hospital personnel in Nepal were interested in getting more education about mushrooms.
She also had some input about designing a flyer with or without edibles.? She thinks both should be included with a clear way to indicate poisonous vs.? edible.? ?I can certainly see an argument for including edibles on the flyer because then people would be more likely to keep it with them because they'd consider it a useful resource.
We also talked about how global warming in general is changing fungal populations all over the world.? That species known elsewhere are popping up in parts of the world where no one is familiar with them.? This means that whatever we figure out that is effective in preventing deaths in Nepal, may be helpful in other parts of the world as well.
So it was interesting hearing her input and thinking about it further.?
Please weigh in if you have other thoughts.
Thank you everyone,? Cornelia?

Multi-years plans with interdisciplinary expertise will bring positive and meaningful impacts in the long run. We must plan/make it possible so that you and other?experts could bring?contribution?by being directly involved with rural vulnerable communities.
Regarding posters, I'm compiling pictures and will keep you posted once gathered from other mycologists and field biologists in Nepal.? Fingers crossed,

Dear all,
I am so glad and excited to hear about your contributions and progress with this project. I have been in Tanzania, connecting with the women who I started the mushroom farm with and teaching firefighting workshops in rural areas. I will write more when I am back in the US later this month, but again, I am so excited for this collaboration! Thank you all for making this happen. If there are more opportunities for me to be involved, I’ll be there.

On a personal note, it's also interesting to see our shared connections/geographies. I'm from North Decatur in Atlanta. Last year, my parents had a major eruption of chanterelles in their yard which was very exciting. Also, Lily, I did my undergraduate senior thesis research outside of Tarangire National Park, studying the status of a large mammal migration corridor north?of the park.

Best, Liam Namaskar all! Sounds like you are working through some great ideas. If they are printed on bags/T-shirts, they will have to be printed as they will easily and quickly be worn through by the level of wear and tear that happens with primary backpacks/T-shirts.

If they are printed on bags/T-shirts, they will have to be printed as they will easily and quickly be worn through by the level of wear and tear that happens with primary backpacks/T-shirts.

Meeting with Liam today; simple video idea; writing an appeal to other clubs in NAMA
Sam and I got to meet with Liam today and walk together by the Chattahoochee River. ?LOVELY and fun. ?So grateful for all the connections. ?
Video Idea: Liam was describing that Dr. Devkota will be headed to villages to educate people and leave posters with them. ?I suggested that someone could use a cell phone to record his presentation. ?This would mean there could be a recording of him doing his educational program and then this could be dubbed and replayed for other parts of Nepal with different dialects. ?Liam had mentioned that there would be a videographer traveling with Rick, so this is another possibility, however, I was trying to think of something accessible and easy.
Raising Funds: The North American Mycological Association (NAMA) does have affiliation with clubs in the US, Canada and Mexico. ?So writing something up about the project to share with other clubs and sending it on could help raise funds for this project.
Matching Funds: ?Liam mentioned that HCSI could then do matching funds as well.
Paypal: Sam mentioned that being able to pay HCSI by clicking on a link would be helpful. ?He had to use a credit card and it was a bit cumbersome. ?Liam said he should be able to make PayPal payment possible.
Meeting on Wed: to be arranged by Liam with Dr. Devkota, the two of us and I believe Rick also.
More to come,
Thank you all, Cornelia

Hello everyone,
My name is Liam Torpy, and I am the program?director of the Himalayan Climate & Science Institute.
Best, Liam

We must plan/make it possible so that you and other?experts could bring?contribution?by being directly involved with rural vulnerable communities.
Regarding posters, I'm compiling pictures and will keep you posted once gathered from other mycologists and field biologists in Nepal.? Fingers crossed,
With kindest regards, Shiva

Dear all,
I am so glad and excited to hear about your contributions and progress with this project.
Love,
