Kenwood TKR-820 UHF

Weird one for the experts... I have a TKR-820 that has been running for YEARS.? And before I got it, it was running for years!!!
?
After about of month of running (summer/winter no difference), it kicks off.? When I reset the power switch, it flashes red briefly and goes out.? If I leave it off overnight, I can come back in the morning, turn it on and work for another month...? Really????? How does one trouble shoot this???

Run it off external 12v supply....the internal is a switcher...they die like that if you haven't recapped it

Iirc some were...it could be the 723 regulator going bad or a cap dying...if that's the case, replace the regulating IC usually a 723 and check the pass xstr to see if it's dying...you should see 18 to 24v on the collector 13.8 on the emitter...recap it totally... cheaper than buying a new supply

I have the same repeater. Great little machine!

I use an external power supply to reduce heat inside the cabinet, and can take with me for field expedient repeater?

?
I found on mine running it on irlp or allstar, had to run a fan on both heat sinks and cut power back to about ten watts.? Cost me a p a replacement to learn that lesson.?

I've had issues with dirty power switches over time on these units. You might try a can of deoxit or contact cleaner in the actual power switch. You could probably confirm this is the problem by wiggling or fiddling with it when its in the failure mode and see if it blinks on/off.

I believe many people, myself included, merely jumper across the power switch when it goes bad. It's a repeater so it's always on anyway...

Taking these suggestion in and it should keep me busy for a few months.... external power supply (have), fix PS/caps, power switch clean and test... THANKS to all!
