another RSS question...

Hi Folks.

Has anyone used RSS in a virtual machine?

I've got RSS 3.03.03, running in a 32bit WinXP under Oracle VirtualBox, inside Win10. I can read the station, it gets to 100% and then hangs, just the hourglass.

I can read all of the Service data.

I understand there may be issues when writing to the station, but I'll cross that proverbial bridge when I get there...

Thanks.

I use Dosbox and windows 7, I also have a vmare win 3.11, win XP and win 2k.
I have been able to read and write to just about any radio.
I also use a "real' serial port card that has 2 port and a parallel port that can also be configured EPP, AND straight parallel?

You didn't mention the radio model, it makes a difference.?

Earlier RSS for earlier models suffered from timing loops to compensate for a lack of suitable data buffering back then but nearly all models and their RSS communicated by RS-232 serial and needed real hardware-based data flow control (CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR). My first thought is that the flow control communications aren't making to the RSS from the radio, whatever it is.

I know with the XTS3000 RSS the trick to making that work was the Virtual machine has to be running a single core 32 bit processor.

I use XP Professional 32 bit, inside VMware workstation 17 player (free), on a Windows 11 machine with a usb to serial adapter. Sometimes I get a "framing error" when starting a transfer, but the transfers goes through OK.

I'm running R14.10.00 in a Win7 VM under Proxmox (at a remote site) with zero issues

It's running on a remote mini PC and Win11 is bloatware. ( I do run it on my workbench computer at my shop under Win11, Win7 compatibility as you point out)

Turns out my 4 year old i7 desktop is just too fast, even in a virtual machine.

Oracle's VirtualBox has a mechanism to slow down the virtual CPU, it's called?
Execution Cap. I set it to 25%, RSS works now.

Thanks?for all the feedback.

Your problem isn't the speed of your computer, not with MTR2000 RSS; the crucial thing is it has to be the 32 bit version of windows for the communications to talk to the radio. Same thing for MTS/MCS/Jedi and 1st gen Astro (been there, done that).

Sorry, just realized you stated in the OP that it was 32 bit Windows XP...? If it were me I would start troubleshooting with different cables, different radios, different? RSS/CPS to confirm the hardware is working.

I have encountered some of these older Windows RSS will only function properly on 32 bit iron (CPU), and not 32 bit Windows (or in a 32 bit VM) that is installed on 64 bit architecture.?

An acquaintance has a few GM300s as control receivers on his repeaters (MTR and Quantar). ?
He used to haul around a Toughbook for radio programming and a Toshiba laptop that
booted into MS-DOS just for the GM300s.

Now he has DOSbox-X on his Toughbook and uses it to run the GM300 RSS.
?
It works well.
