6 meter repeater..

edriddle

the ge master II is the best choice i think. look on the web as there is a
complete set of instructions to modify your rsdio. also look up the nhrc
repeater controller. if you just search yahoo for nhrc it will come up and
i think there is a link to the ge master II

Hi People:

I'm looking for information on modifing either a tube final
GE Master, or a mobile Canadian GE MC74XC833A (100 watt mobile,
Master II I think?)for repeater use.

Which would be the better choice?

I also have a Mitrek...would this be better for use in a
repeater?

This is my first 6 meter repeater project, and I would like
to hear any thoughts on what to use. I have DB products
duplexor (6 can helical resonator, notch) to use and is
all tuned up and ready to go. All I have to figure out
is what radio to use and how to modify it for duplex
operation.

Thanks kindly,

I'd use the Mitrek - why beat your brains out building fan cooling, etc. for
the GE's and then have the recurring expense of replacing the driver and
final tubes? In addition, the mobile power supplies are intermittent duty,
so you'll have to build a high voltage power supply, as opposed to hooking
up a deep cycle marine battery and an el cheapo battery charger to the
Mitrek.

Thanks Ed. The sites address is:

Great stuff, and it looks very easy to do the mod's.

The Master II is tuned up on 52.525, so it shouldn't
take much to get it up to 53.27 (-1 Mhz).

That's the kind of information I was after. I thought having
tube outputs would make it tougher? Only the old Master (1?)
base unit has tubes, the Master II (mobile) is solid state.

Any comment on RX sensitivity over the Master II, and the Mitrek?
The donor Master II is still on 42.something, so I can't
really do a fair evaluation, unless they are both inband,
but I don't want to waist time (money) on rocking the MasterII
if the Mitrek is more sensitive.

Thanks for the help...

Actually, at 6M receiver sensitivity is not an issue unless there's been a
lightning strike - the real thing to look for is, which if either unit has
an RF noise blanker? The Motorola "Extender" is a terrific noise blanker
that will remove all but the most horrendous of impulse noises that
otherwise would destroy weaker received signals. I expect GE has something
similar, but I don't know what it's called. This will make a very great
difference in the operation of your repeater.

How do I find out? I used the Mitrek on 52.525 with a bunch
of computers in the area, and found it to be quite quiet. My
Alinco DR-M06 is horrible at noise rejection on the other
hand. Both radios hooked to the same antenna (not at the
same time, hi!) shows the Mitrek has a fantastic Receiver.

From all the replies I received, I get the impression that
either the Master II or the Mitrek will work well.

A couple other questions.....

I purchased a commercial 1/4 wave ground plane antenna. From
experience, will this suffice for the repeater, or should I
look around for a better solution? The antenna will be mounted
about 140 feet above ground feed with 1 5/8" heliax. I've been
looking around but can't find any side mounted dipoles for 6m.
Is there some other design I should look at.

The DB product duplexor has been tuned up and I got about
91 Db isolation from TX to RX. What would you recommend for
maximum TX power, to keep desence to a minimum? After visiting
the Master II mods page, they said that the transmitter doesn't
like going below 40% of maximum TX power, and it's a 110 watt
unit. Therefore, the minimum power I should set it to is
about 40 to 45 watts. Is that too much?

Ideas?

Tedd,

The Mastr II solid state is a much better radio for repeater use. You could
use one of the others, but I would choose the Mastr II.

Tedd,

GE also has a version of the Motorola "extender" for Low Band.

DB Products makes a Low Band Loop Dipole that can be side mounted on a pole
or tower leg. It is a DB-212. They also make a directional antenna with 1
director, the DB-225 for 5 db of gain.
Db's phone number is 800-676-5342.

I would run around 50 watts with that PA. Your Transmitter duty cycle will
depend on how hot the PA gets.
You will need to check your system for desense when you get it all hooked
up. Reduce your power until the desense goes away! Or add more isolation to
your duplexer or use split antennas.
