Internet provision at a remote repeater site?
I am the keeper of GB3VS a UHF repeater in the UK .it operates using the ARCOM 210 controller ..which has 2 spare channels
I am considering connecting it into the Allstar network but the site has no internet.
We are a small group with limited resources so a a mobile SIM is not really an option. My home QTH is approx 500M from the repeater site. I am therefore looking at how I might extend a data link from my home to the site ?
?
Alternatively link the repeater raw audio ( without callsign, time announcements etc) to my home QTH where it could routed into my hotspot Raspberry Pi.
?
I am sure that someone must have attempted this at some stage? |

Use an external Yagi for the wifi...they work great ...use them all the time with BDAs...500mtrs should not be a problem with them...does your wifi router have external antenna connectors?? Chris WB5ITT? On Mon, Mar 17, 2025, 7:49 AM Adrian G4UVZ via <adrianwhatmore248=[email protected]> wrote:

Adrian,
If you have line of site or you can make a LOS shot a pair of Ubquiti 5GHz radios configured as an Ethernet bridge.? 500m should no problem.? I suggest 5GHz if it is available in your country because 2.4GHz is an RF cesspool with only 3 channels due to overlap here in the US, with billions and billions of IOT on that spectrum. I use them all the time on camera systems and even remote my HF station, IRLP & DMR repeater on the same link.? There are many vendors of similar radios but these have proven to be very reliable.? I have one link that has been running over 10 years and I have not done anything except upgrade the firmware every so often. Good luck! K1IMD |
We load AREDN code into them and get 4 additional channels above the Pt 15 band and it is all amateur radio based.?? Here is the AREDN Web Site: That is for the jackwipes that make noise about linking repeaters over the internet, this uses all of the same protocols but under Pt 97 (USA Rules), there is AREDN in the UK because there are a bunch of nodes on the dynamic map.? I likewise use AREDN for all my links between repeater sites. No monthly
fees and the hardware can be quite inexpensive when purchased off
Ebay.

If AllStar is all you want to accomplish, you could just set up an AllStar node and set it to TX on your repeater's receive frequency and RX on your repeater's transmit frequency, just like how you would program any other radio for that repeater.
?
That way, you can keep the AllStar node at home, where you have reliable internet, and make an RF link to the repeater.? |
Not quite so simple. You need to get rid of the repeater IDs and any courtesy tones.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAnd hang times...So you set up the repeater to transmit PL only during active receive. The COR drops, the tone stops, and the CT, ID and hang time are now invisible to the Allstar receiver. Chuck WB2EDV On 3/22/2025 9:15 PM, Teton Amateur

Sending IDs, courtesy times, etc. down all-star is big no no..... The uplink would also have to be legally IDed in the US under part 97 rules Chris WB5ITT? Or HamVOIP or IRLP or most any kind of link that is not your own.

We use downhill signaling for our .88 repeater for Echolink in Spokane. I installed a simple (NPN) switch on the CG encoder since it already has that feature (CG disable).
Works great using a control station. Also works with IRLP (in a past project).
