I had asked them to put a dummy load on the top and sweep the line when they replaced the antenna (or at very least recheck the VSWR), but that didn¡¯t happen.?

I¡¯ll have to drag the spectrum analyzer out there next time I go to look for grunge.

Adjusting power level on a Kenwood TKR 850

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the power output for high and or low power on a Kenwood TKR 850 repeater? I know there's a pot inside the repeater but can someone advise me on what it's labeled?

Re: quantar use for 2meter repeater

Thanks i have changed the tx freq to 151.0 validated and rebooted? but still no transmit so I may have a hardware problem

Re: Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio

Hey Jeff!
?
Audio is tapped off of the discriminator in the Tait, ahead of all the filtering. Feeds a Palomar Telecom controller.
?
The broadcast audio is then propagated out of all transmitters (420 and 440). The only thing that seems to be affected is the 440 receiver.
?
I'm assuming the 1nF cap can run from the audio input to the controller to ground.
?
Link TX/RX is a Motorola CDM arrangement with a custom interface board. It does not seem to be bothered at all.
?
Not surprised on the ferrites - I assumed they likely wouldn't be of the right frequency.
?
Thanks Jeff.

Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater

I've gone as far as I can with this thing. I'm happy to pay
someone to fix this thing. I'm totally blind and although I can
check and align things with a service monitor, I can't replace
parts. When first turned on, it is fine. After it warms up for
a while, I get a noise in the receiver like the attached file.
It isn't the fan, and the transmitter is off, although it does
get louder when transmitter is turned on. This is listening to
the repeater speaker. I won't ship the whole wrack mount chasi,
I'll just ship the repeater itself. Feel free to write off list.

Check to see if the popping noise coincides with when the

a
plus offset. And I did the program it for a 442.100 frequencies

If it is doing that and a) the TX is off and b)
you're sure it's not your service monitor then
the only option left is the RX itself

The repeater has a noise on receive like bacon frying.
Not
sure
what is causing that. I can give you a call if you want
to
listen to it. kind of a crackling noise. I haven't

That's good to know thanks. Hopefully my little laptop
comes
by
Wednesday because tentatively planning on going back to
the
site
in portage on Thursday to visit the lady Buggs, well OK
not
really, but putting up the Lincoln tenor for the
repeaters
and
figuring out what is going on with my DNC. I turned it on
and
it
gives me a little Gibberish character, but then I turn it
off
and
back on again and then it works. Might have to just flush
the
whole TNC and start over. Would like it just to power up
and
work
because if there's a power failure and that TNC comes
back
on
then it won't power up correctly and I'm 70+ miles away
from
the
site with no transportation.

Re: quantar use for 2meter repeater

Then my guess is, it actually IS a high split transmitter and the VCO is not locking as low as you'd like it to (technically OOB). Change your TX frequency to something above 150 and see if it starts working...

Re: Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio

Probably more questions than answers at this point:

1. If I¡¯m understanding correctly, when the 440 receiver is active, you hear the FM audio on the 420 link transmitter, right? Do you also hear FM mixed in with the 440 receive audio on the 440 repeater transmitter?
2. Where are you Rx taking audio from on the Tait?
3. Is there any DC riding on top of #2 above?
4. What kind f controller?
5. What kind of link transmitter?
6. Instead of, or in addition to, ferrite, have you tried filtering with bypass caps across the audio lines? Use something good for the purpose, like a ceramic disc, 1 nF or thereabouts. The ferrite that comes with the Quantars and GTR¡¯s is primarily for EMI from the switching supplies and for lightning protection, may not provide much choking Z up in the 3 meter band, and obviously doesn't help with differential mode RFI.
7. ¡°Only noticeable change is that when the RX audio line shield of the 174 is grounded, the audio level of the broadcast FM increases.¡± That seems to point to a common-mode problem. Are you taking audio from a balanced line driver on the Tait?

Happy Motherola Day.

Subject: [repeater-builder] Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio

This one is playing hell with my sanity.

I've got a 440 site with a 420 link radio that has broadcast audio from 95.7FM coming in along with the repeater receiver audio. I can dial it down to zero using the controller's audio input pot, so I'd assume it's coming in on the RX audio line. The audio level of the broadcast audio is significantly lower than the repeat audio, so the repeater is still usable, it's just... Highly annoying.

Switched all audio lines over to RG174. Tried grounding both ends of the shield, one end of the shield, the other end of the shield, nothing. Tried some ferrites (the ones that come with the Quantar and AstroTAC equipment), no luck. Tried them everywhere. AC lines, audio lines, control lines, no change.

Only noticeable change is that when the RX audio line shield of the 174 is grounded, the audio level of the broadcast FM increases.

Receiver is a Tait T800-I slimline. I wonder if it's all the exposed wiring on the back side of it that's picking this up.

I've tried just about everything I can think of with regard to shielding and ferrites. I don't believe that RF is getting into the controller itself directly, it's obviously coming in on the RX audio line.

At this point I am considering swapping the Tait with a TKR-840 so there isn't so much exposed wiring, nor a need for an outboard PL encoder/decoder which could be part of this (but I tried ferrites on all of its cabling as well.

OK braintrust... Jeff/WN3A, whatcha got for me? This one is out of my league.

Thanks!

I think he was referring to noise being created by the internal
fan in
the 851. What power level do you have it set to? If you set the
851 to
the lowest power output does the condition still exist? Does it

Better yet, can you program the 851 fan to continuous ON status?
Is the

The repeater has a noise on receive like bacon frying.
Not
sure
what is causing that. I can give you a call if you want
to
listen to it. kind of a crackling noise. I haven't
tried

figuring out what is going on with my DNC. I turned it on

because if there's a power failure and that TNC comes

Kevin: It's a Palomar Telecom RBC-700 series with the shielding kit installed. I have no reason to believe the audio is being induced at the controller.

Milt: FM broadcast station is at the same site, probably less than 150' away.
?
It's a full 440 repeater with a full duplex 420 link back to a tandem that then links to other sites.
?
I did speak with another group with a repeater at the same site in the same configuration, they too have issues though not to the same degree. They suggested a radio change. That conversation was late last night.

listen to it. kind of a crackling noise. I haven't tried
adjusting anything yet, but sensativity is poor even on the
151.1875 frequency.

That's good to know thanks. Hopefully my little laptop
comes
by
Wednesday because tentatively planning on going back to the
site
in portage on Thursday to visit the lady Buggs, well OK not
really, but putting up the Lincoln tenor for the repeaters
and
figuring out what is going on with my DNC. I turned it on
and
it
gives me a little Gibberish character, but then I turn it
off
and
back on again and then it works. Might have to just flush
the
whole TNC and start over. Would like it just to power up
and
work
because if there's a power failure and that TNC comes back
on
then it won't power up correctly and I'm 70+ miles away
from
the
site with no transportation.

See Chris's comments about the fuse.

BTW, the only reason to use the mic jack is if you're
updating
the
firmware (or don't want to otherwise with the rear panel
DB25).

Good to hear you're good to go

Re: Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio

Where is the FM broadcast station relative to the equipment, local or distant?

Is the 440 site with the 420 link a repeater with a 420 link receiver
or is it a receive site with a link transmitter?

?What about putting a dummy load directly on the 420 receiver. Then, using an HT, transmit a signal near the receiver. If the FM station audio goes away, the problem is external to the equipment, possibly intermod. If you still hear the FM audio the problem is in the receive equipment. At least that is a start at locating where it is coming from.

At this point I am considering swapping the Tait with a TKR-840 so there isn't so much exposed wiring, nor a need for an outboard PL encoder/ decoder which could be part of this (but I tried ferrites on all of its cabling as well.
OK braintrust... Jeff/WN3A, whatcha got for me? This one is out of my league.
Thanks!

Thanks
When I select R1 I get a msg that the tx is a mismatch and I have pressed the validate button? and wrote the codeplug and reset the station

Re: trying to read data on a kenwood 851 repeater

Check the IF demodulator IC9 located near the ceramic filters on the TX/RX Unit (see below). Part number is TK14489.?

Hit it with a shot of freeze spray and see if your RX quality improves. If so, reflow/replace as necessary. Also may want to check X1 for sensitivity.?

Hi Butch,

I'm not familiar with the 851, but my first thought would be is this a
repeater that was used?? If so, did you first test it on its original

I don't know if you have to retune the PLL on an 851 if you move it a
lot in frequency.

Re: Broadcast audio on repeater receive audio

Try disconnecting the audio line FROM the receiver, AT THE RECEIVER and shorting it toward the controller. Does the offending audio go away? ?is there a change in level?
?
?Then try shorting at the controller. ?Is there a change?
?
What controller are you using?
?
