Re: Can I use a low power programming cable to program high power astro spectra?
A common problem is that the USB-serial adapter will be assigned a comport number that the software will not show as available to use.

You need 32-bit, and generally a REAL RS-232 serial port. Some of these will work with certain USB adapters, but many won't. On 3/26/2025 11:51 PM, Bob KK6RQ via groups.io wrote:

Yes.? The TKR851s (and 751s) were developed and manufactured after the TKR850 Ver 2s
were developed.?? In other words, all of the x51s are Version 2 radios.
Between the shop and several local ham groups I've laid hands on about 40 TKRx50s both Ver 2s and pre-Ver 2s.?? The KPG-46 cable works on all of them.
The original units required KPG-66D (as far as I know ver 2.01 was the final). The V2 units required KPG-91D.? There have been several versions, one had a fan bug...? The TX fan had two modes, thermal and always-on.?
When KPG-91D was used on a original unit there was a possibility that the fan would get stuck in always-on.
I was told that Version 2.13 resolves that.? I've been using 2.13 on both original units and Ver 2s with zero issues.
Until 2.13 came out I had both KPG-66 and KPG-91 on my field computers.
?
One caution from a local Kenwood shop tech:
= = = = = There's at least one fairly useful bit of information I can contribute regarding Kenwood Repeater programming. You want the ".dat" file that is loaded into the repeater to be generated by the same version of software. Meaning, if you use kpg-91d version 2.x to create the dat file (codeplug) for your TKR then you want to use
only the exact same version 2.x to upload that dat file into the TKR and not any other version.
If you don't know what version the loaded repeater dat file was created with, read it and create a new one using only the software version you have loaded in / used with your computer.
?
When you start crossing different versions of programming software some very strange operational quirks can,
and in certain cases will occur. Save yourself the head scratching trouble shooting that I've already seen come
through the door.
= = = = =
In other words, you can be setting yourself up for future problems if something like this happens...
* Your second hand repeater came with a codeplug that was generated by, say, Ver 1.6 software (and in reality you probably have no idea what version was used).?
* You naturally bench that new-to-you repeater to check it out.? * You have a workbench computer with, say, Version 2.1 software on it.??
* You download and save the codeplug on your bench computer, modify the codeplug with your ham frequencies, tone, etc, retune the repeater front end and then install the repeater at your site.?
* You have a field computer and it has the new rev on it - let's say that it is version 2.13. ?
* Six months later you are at the site for some other reason and while you are there you decide to add a backup mode to the repeater... Mode 01 is the normal mode and is configured for an external controller
and you decide to set up Mode 02 with the in-cabinet-repeat and internal ID just in case the controller
dies at some future date and the repeater has to work by itself.??
Someone can go to the site and just press "Channel Up" so the display reads "02". * You download the repeater codeplug to your laptop, make the change, and then upload it.?? * And now the repeater starts misbehaving. Mode 01 does;t even work like it used to. You think
"good thing I saved the codeplug before I changed things". You reload the unchanged codeplug.?
That doesn't fix it. It's still broke..? IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT.?? * Just create a new codeplug from scratch, customize it with your parameters and upload it to the TKR. One version did it all.?? Doesn't have to be one computer, just the same version on all the computers. ?
Since I heard about this potential nightmare I always download the codeplug that the radio comes with
(and save it with "-original" at the end of the filename), inspect all the screens, take notes (sometimes I
"print-screen" to a JPEG file), and then I create a new virgin codeplug, customize it, and upload that one.

Re: Kenwood KMC35 Microphone Mod to Improve Audio
Yes, Bob, compared with the Grey KMC 27 mic, the black KMC35 mic does sound good. I am being picky. To me the gold standard mic audio is a Motorola SyntorX/ X9000 with the cap closest to the mic cord on the mic board changed from 0.047 MF to 0.33MF. The Kenwood 0.068MF cap deletion will bring a TKX90 radio close to that, but, if going through a repeater, the repeater audio needs to be flat from 300-2800 cps and no compression or clipping, to notice the improvement with the Kenwood mic mod, probably not the way Kenwood would have you set up a repeater.

After 8 years of working with them, and thousands of radios, Ive never noticed any issues with audio quality on those out side of faulty mics that had bad cords or were otherwise broken.
