In my mind the question of "to ID or not to ID" is not really a big deal. Using an ID-O-Matic is not much more complicated than using a cross over cable.? My experience with an e-bay cross-over cable was that it did not work out of the box. There was a jumper missing on one of the boards. So even with a simple cross over cable, one must understand and be able to verify each connection. And the audio level needs to be properly set with both the cable or the ID-O-Matic.?

All the rest of the tasks of building a repeater out of mobiles still exist: Duplexer tuning, Radio programming, Radio interconnect cabling, etc. and those are the more complicated tasks.
