Because the battery was swollen it took some convincing to get it out of the UPS. The inside of the UPS was wet and the battery was split open on both sides. My best guess is that the trickle charging circuit in the UPS failed and overcharged the battery until it burst. So much for the theory that sealed lead acid batteries won't leak.
I've seen stacks of bad APC UPS batteries at work. ALL of them were swollen.
APC UPS = battery cooker.
