Sticky Welcome to Radio JOVE 2.0 3
Dear Radio JOVE Community, The Radio JOVE Project is a NASA Partner citizen science project where participants purchase, assemble, and operate their own 16-24 MHz radio spectrograph to observe solar, Jupiter, Galactic, and Earth-based radio emissions. Learn to become a citizen scientist and contribute scientific-quality data to our data archive. Visit Getting Started to learn how to participate in Radio JOVE. Regards, The Radio JOVE Team

Solar Activity reported by this group. 4
Below is a chart showing reported solar activity by this group since it started. This was done with ChatGPT's help and only includes new posts with an image and using keywords. It is just an approximate value. The idea was to see if our activity on this group approximates the solar activity (using sunspot number because it was easy to get) and as an exercise for me to see if something might be done to facilitate archiving these curated reports. All of the activity of this group was downloaded as a single 12 GB mbox file which was then used to produce a single filtered CSV file. GPT then analyzed the CSV file and produced a python program the does the histogram. -- Jim Sky radiosky at radiosky dot com http://radiosky.com

Views of the Solar "Storm" from the Dark Sky Observatory May 13, 2025 45
Here are some views of the fantastic solar earlier today from the Dark Sky Observatory. The first shows the entire "storm", and the remaining spectrographs show some of the details. Richard

LINEARITY - MEASUREMENTS 5
I was intrigued by the calibration of the standard RJ setup. While I do not use that setup, I decided to measure what I use for other purposes, including RJ. So, have a read of the attachment. I'm using the AirSpy Discovery HF+ to test the linearity. The system is diagrammed to start and then, I ran an HP generator up by 10 dB steps ultimately into Radio SkyPipe. I was somewhat disappointed at the non-linear behavior of the system. Please have a read of the attachment. CONCLUSION: Yes, calibration is needed if linear response to the input is required!!! The FFT and nuclear weapons 3
Here's a very interesting explanation of how and why the modern FFT came to exist in the 1960s, then we discover that Gauss had already invented it, but never published it. Veritasium - The Most Important Algorithm of All Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmgFG7PUHfo -- Dave

Good evening: All I have to offer are two weird solar emissions. I think they are solar because both coincide with characteristic spikes on Skypipe. Did anyone else see them? John

Calibration curve using RSP1B 5
Hi folks, I too am having trouble getting a good Cal curve. Using the standard Radio JOVE setup with the RSP1B receiver. I managed to get a decent Cal curve using these settings: RF Gain = 9 IF Gain = -45dB Visual Gain = -40 dB SDRc2RSS Gain = 2.0 Not quite linear, but not too bad. I did not adjust the Visual Gain per Richard¡¯s comment below, but maybe I don¡¯t understand it either. See screenshot below. Chuck

Solar Events 19 May 2025, Prospect, ME
Good evening....two weak events....maybe A lot of strong, local lightning recently. Off-topic...many evenings after submitting an events' report I'll turn on my ham radio and spend some time using FT-8 (digital mode) on the various bands starting at 10m (28.0 Mhz) then 12 m (24.9 Mhz), 15m (21.0 Mhz),....18Mhz, 14Mhz...down to 3.6Mhz. The last few evenings here from 28 to 18 Mhz I have heard & contacted almost no stations ANYWHERE....quite unusual. Fun with radio.

Update to "RX888 On SDR Console, SDRc2RSS", and RSS Documentation
FYI The 1/29/2025 pdf document "RX888 On SDR Console, SDRc2RSS and RSS" was updated 5/17/2025 and is attached below. The Chinese RX888/RX888 MKII is fabricated by several different manufacturers in China. Some are just clones or redesigned SDRs. A totally new design is in progress to correct known issues such as overheating, PCB runs too close together, and other design issues, etc. As with some eBay items, you never know what your going to get. The RX888/RX888 MKII as well as other SDRs may be used with SDR Console and SDRc2RSS and RSS on an experimental basis. The RSP1B calibration process can only be used as a guide. Calibration accuracy cannot be guaranteed. For an accurately calibrated spectrograph the Radio JOVE supported SDRplay RSP1 or RSP1B are suggested. Thank you. Good evening: Solar from today. I am calling the first two captures a SID. However, the margins of signal drop-out are quite distinct, leaning me away from calling it a SID. Did anyone else see it? John
