Hi
?
Solar events Today.

Re: 02 April 2025 Some solar plus more Jupiter-Io

Looking back, I'm just going to chalk it up to RFI, as I can't seem to find any other indications matching the same times you have. Thanks?for the quick response!

Hi Caleb,
?
Are you referring to the signal that is present in your spectrograms at about 21.5 MHz?? That looks to me, unfortunately, to be some pretty typical RFI.? Check out the same time periods that I detected non-Io-A and see if you can see anything at the same time that I did.
?
Best wishes,? Richard

Howdy Richard,

A wonderful collection of captures from yesterday. I may have gotten some of the non-Io A, right around the same timeframe, but I'm honestly not sure if this is Jupiter or just RFI. If you have thoughts on whether this fits or not, I'd love to know.?

02 April 2025 Some solar plus more Jupiter-Io

Hi Folks,?
?
Here are some more spectrograms featuring solar bursts from 02 April 2025, most of which were posted by other observers.? Some of these also show Io-B emission.? In addition, the last three (spectrograms G, H, and I) show non-Io-A emission.

02 April 2025 Solar 14h00 - 18h00 A few peculiar solar(?) bursts

Here are some spectrograms of solar bursts on April 02 2025.? Some of these look pretty normal, but some look unusual.? Take a look at the last spectrogram between 17:26 and 17:36.? There are a number of emission "events" which are fairly narrow-band, but do not appear like normal human-caused RFI.? These events can be seen in both polarization channels, and so are presumably not Jupiter-Io.? Did anyone else see these features?

02 April 2025: Jupiter and Solar at the same time!!

Hi All,
?
Thanks for the head's up to all who posted those very nice images of solar on April 02.? Going over the data from our Dark Sky Observatory TFD4 array, I ran across this very nice combination of Io-B and a Type III solar burst, all within a few minutes of each other!
?
I will be posting some more images later.

Re: New dual dipole array in Maryland

Thanks Carl!? Thanks Sabine!?

Sabine, thank you for the tips on automation, we¡¯ll give those options a go.? I¡¯ll try to post a picture of the setup soon. ?

We went with the standard setup in the kit instructions, east/west orientation.? Location is a small town in a more rural part of Maryland called Finksburg.?

We also plan to try activating the server function in RSS in case folks want to observe remotely.

It appears that there is a file size limit at 2 GB. Jim describes one way to automatically record data here ("Run Timed Observation" from the "File" menue):
?
Another way is "File/Run From Schedule File". You'll find the description of the .skd file in RSS' Help file.

Do you have a photo of your new location/antenna?

Of course!? Sorry, as a newbie, every little blip on the spectrum is a new discovery and something more to learn about. :)??
You don't have to apologize! That's exactly the right attitude!
Did the overload damage your system or ruin your calibration? Maybe there¡¯s no way to prevent it if the ionosphere is being blasted. ?
These overload conditions occur in most ADCs when the magnitude exceeds 0 dBm. Usually, it's not even individual narrowband signals that trigger this, but rather the sum of several high-field signals when there's a lot of power across the entire spectrum, as was the case during the contest. The ADC could certainly be damaged at some point, but I hope the hardware contains mitigating measures.

Hi all,

Jack Ganssle and I were able to setup a dual dipole kit about an hour northeast from the Mills Cross Array historical site, far enough from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore for reduced interference. ?

Attached is a shot of a recent observation.? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We ran into a file size limit in Radio Sky Spectrograph with an initial dataset.? The file was 2GB total.

What is the file size limit and is there a way to automate stop/start for file creation in RSS?

Thanks so much!

02 Apr 2025 Dawn and dusk

The ionosphere didn't really get going in the morning after a first prominent teepee arc around 06:25 UTC. In the evening, the airglow was just as quickly gone long before the sun had set.
