Re: New dual dipole array in Maryland

Thanks Carl!? Thanks Sabine!?

Sabine, thank you for the tips on automation, we¡¯ll give those options a go.? I¡¯ll try to post a picture of the setup soon. ?

We went with the standard setup in the kit instructions, east/west orientation.? Location is a small town in a more rural part of Maryland called Finksburg.?

We also plan to try activating the server function in RSS in case folks want to observe remotely.

It appears that there is a file size limit at 2 GB. Jim describes one way to automatically record data here ("Run Timed Observation" from the "File" menue):
?
Another way is "File/Run From Schedule File". You'll find the description of the .skd file in RSS' Help file.

Do you have a photo of your new location/antenna?

You don't have to apologize! That's exactly the right attitude!
Did the overload damage your system or ruin your calibration? Maybe there¡¯s no way to prevent it if the ionosphere is being blasted. ?
These overload conditions occur in most ADCs when the magnitude exceeds 0 dBm. Usually, it's not even individual narrowband signals that trigger this, but rather the sum of several high-field signals when there's a lot of power across the entire spectrum, as was the case during the contest. The ADC could certainly be damaged at some point, but I hope the hardware contains mitigating measures.

Hi all,

Jack Ganssle and I were able to setup a dual dipole kit about an hour northeast from the Mills Cross Array historical site, far enough from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore for reduced interference. ?

Attached is a shot of a recent observation.? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We ran into a file size limit in Radio Sky Spectrograph with an initial dataset.? The file was 2GB total.

What is the file size limit and is there a way to automate stop/start for file creation in RSS?

Thanks so much!

The ionosphere didn't really get going in the morning after a first prominent teepee arc around 06:25 UTC. In the evening, the airglow was just as quickly gone long before the sun had set.

Hi Sabine,

Wow, this compared to the extreme band noise you caught a couple of days ago, this is realy impressive.

Re: 30 Mar 2025 Dusk and dawn

Hi Sabine,

Of course!? Sorry, as a newbie, every little blip on the spectrum is a new discovery and something more to learn about. :) But obviously not what we want when we¡¯re trying to tune into Radio Jove. ?

Did the overload damage your system or ruin your calibration? Maybe there¡¯s no way to prevent it if the ionosphere is being blasted. ?

It seems like the interference levels and variations in the ionosphere are changing dramatically in the short time since I¡¯ve joined the group.? Especially, the activity in Europe seems very high.
