Sticky Group eMail Etiquette
I would like to make sure you are all aware of two particularly useful links at the bottom of our group eMails. One is Reply To Sender, which is useful for private conversations that should not be sent to the entire group. Conversations not meant for the entire club should be done with private emails. We don't want to cause members to unsubscribe from our group due to a flood of emails they don't need to see. The other is Mute This Topic, which is useful if you don't want to continue to receive eMails in a particular conversation. Glenn D. Sticky Handling a bouncing RAC eMail account
You should be receiving RAC emails nearly every day. If you ever stop getting them, this might help you resolve the problem. Handling a bouncing account When you are receiving group messages by email but group messages cannot be delivered to you for some reason, the nondelivery events are called bounces. Such events put your Groups.io account into a bouncing state that affects all the groups you belong to with that account¡¯s email address. Groups.io tries to notify a bouncing member by sending an email message that has the subject line ¡°Your Groups.io Account is Bouncing.¡± Also, when a bouncing member logs in to the Groups.io website, a red banner at the top of the page informs them that their account is bouncing. Note: Even if your Groups.io account is bouncing, you can still log in to group websites and read and post messages there. Bouncing affects only email delivery; it does not affect your ability to use group websites. If you have not received an email notification that your account is bouncing but you realize that you have not received any group email messages for a while, you can check your account to see whether group messages are bouncing. For instructions, go to Setting account preferences and viewing account information and scroll down to Checking recent email bounces. When your Groups.io account is bouncing, you can try to ¡°unbounce¡± your account using either of these methods: If you received a ¡°Your Groups.io Account is Bouncing¡± email notification, click the link in the email to unbounce your account. Go to the Groups.io website (and log in if necessary). In the red banner at the top of the page, click the link to unbounce your account. ! Important: Group owners and moderators cannot do anything to unbounce accounts of their group members. When your account is bouncing, you must address the underlying problem yourself, which might involve contacting your email service provider for assistance or investigation. Glenn D. Virtual Star Party tonight! 3
Dear RAC, I¡¯m going to try and host a live stream tonight via Zoom that will be a star gazing program featuring the constellation Leo. There are many galaxies and interesting stars within the boundary of this zodiacal constellation. I hope to be able to show views of the following objects using our new Station 3 telescope. NGC 2903,Regulus and its companion, the dwarf galaxy Leo 1, the compact group Hickson 44, the Leo Trio, and maybe if time allows M95/96 and the double star Denebola. The program will be informal with participants encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback. There will also probably be some glitches so grab your virtual tomatoes and feel free to toss them my way! But it should be fun and will give you a good idea about how to use the RAC/MSRO station 3 telescope. I¡¯ll start at about 8:45 as it¡¯s getting dark and we will go till about 11. This is a test event and I hope to improve future programs based on how things go tonight. I¡¯ll also look forward to your feedback. I¡¯ll send out the zoom link when I get home from work so stay tuned. Myron

Zoom recording link for Virtual Stargazing Session May 24, 2025 2
Dear RAC, Last night we held our first virtual stargazing event via Zoom using the Station 3 telescope. We had some problems-mostly with color balance on the camera and getting the scope aligned with the sky. Images were too green and not scaled very well.. However, this will be fixed by our next session as I will purchase the Pro version of SharpCap which allows much better image manipuation. Also had a few glitches with connectivity to the camera and software, but I think I have that problem fixed as well. So bottom line is I learned alot, and want to thank those watching for their patience. For those not able to attend, I am enclosing the link to our session. I hope to be able to conduct another session soon which should run smoother. Hope you enjoy watching our first star gazing session! ? Dear RAC, Looks like a useful resource. Website is legit. Myron Begin forwarded message: From: jty.astro@... Date: May 23, 2025 at 5:31:01 PM EDT To: jty.astro@... Subject: Free Astronomy Book - PDF Download Reply-To: jtyrep2020@... ? Hello, James Yoder here, I am a co-author of a new Free PDF book called the Star Hopper¡¯s Guide to the Galaxy. I though you might want to pass this information along to your club. Thanks! James Yoder The Star Hopper¡¯s Guide to the Galaxy is a free PDF book created for astronomers in the northern hemisphere who do not have a GoTo telescope or are interested in finding objects using the star hopping technique. The book along with additional resources can be downloaded from the ArtCentrics website at https://artcentrics.com/books/ The book primarily consists of star hop instruction sheets developed by Jim Mazur that were initially made available on his website Skyledge.net. This compilation contains over 170 instruction sheets with over 250 objects. Each sheet contains two star charts; the first chart is used to help orient you to the night sky and immediate area around the target using familiar constellations or asterisms such as the Big Dipper, the Summer Triangle, or the Great Square of Pegasus. The second chart is a detailed road map on how to hop to the highlighted objects. Information on the targeted objects is provided, as well as a small image of the object, when available. The book is organized by constellations and the targets within the constellation. Each constellation has a page that summarizes the targets in the constellation along with a table listing basic information on each of the objects. The table includes the name of the object, the type of the object, links to the finder chart (within the book, and on the Skyledge.net website), aliases for the object, and some basic stats such as magnitude, separation (in the case of multiple stars), surface brightness, and size. A chart highlighting the constellation is also provided on the page along with online links to Wikipedia articles where more information on each of the targets can be found. The constellation summary page is followed by an image gallery where images for many of the targets are provided for reference. The book was specifically developed to be printed out so it can be taken out in the field. One can print out sections as needed, or print the entire book and place it in a binder or have it spiral bound. Additional functionality is available when utilizing the book on a PC or smart device such as an iPad. Many links with additional information are available throughout the book with the purpose of providing in depth information either in preparation of a viewing session, or additional research after a viewing session. The book is copyrighted under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 law, so it can be freely printed and distributed provided there is no profit involved. We think this book will be a valuable tool to help the observational astronomer have a productive viewing session. James Yoder, Andrea Matthias, Jim Mazur

Zoom Link for May 2025 RAC Business/Program meeting
Dear RAC, Please find attached a link to the Zoom recording for our May 2025 meeting and program.During the meeting I gave an update on our Station 3 progress (its online now!), and the program was a demonstration on how to connect and open the software needed to control the telescope. Future training sessions will be provided and recorded that will go into more detail on how to operate the telescope and capture images. I will also be sending out zoom invites for "MSRO Live Observing Sessions" where members can watch in real time as I operate the telescope to show off various splendors of the night sky. As our camera is a high definition system-you should be able to watch on a large screen smart TV as well with stunning clarity! So turn down the lights and grab some popcorn and enjoy the beauty of the heavens in full color! I hope to do our first program soon which will be called " Galaxies of the Lion's Den". NGC 7000 (North American Nebula) from MSRO Station 3 3
Dear RAC, Last night was a nice clear night so early this morning I had some time on to obtain another test image using our new Station 3 telescope-a Stellavue SVX102 T-Raptor and ASI 2600MC duo camera. Here is a compressed image of the result. As Pete mentioned in an earlier post-we still need to install a field flattener to sharpen up the star images at the edge of the frame. However, this image gives a good idea of the FOV and capabilities of our new station! Myron

More MSRO 3 testing 3
Good morning! Pretty good weather again last night with only a bit of high clouds. The panels for the new MSRO 3 enclosure arrived on a pallet in Myron's driveway. This larger (60" x 60" footprint) enclosure will allow us to get the field flattener back in the optical train. Expect a couple of weeks to get it constructed. Testing continues on the MSRO 3 Raptor system. Myron focused the integrated guiding chip (a separate knob on the camera) which allowed for a high Signal to Noise Ratio in PHD2 and flawless tracking. I only had a bit over an hour to image M101 before it hit the meridian. In this tight enclosure I REALLY try to avoid pier flips. There are some flaws in the attached image that will be removed when we get flats/darks/bias frames. It's also a rather noisy image because I wanted to pull as much data forward of the galaxy's structure as possible. I reduced FIT rejection criteria since I only had thirteen FITs to start with. Testing! Pete M101-Luminance-St_v5.jpg

MSRO 3 Testing Continued - M90 (and friends)
Hello Everyone! We continue to test MSRO station 3 equipped with SV102T with ASI 2600 MC Duo. Due to space constraints, it is currently configured with the camera on a diagonal - no flatteners or field reducers, so native f7. The star flare from lack of flattener is evident. With a new enclosure in the next few weeks we should be able to straighten out the optical train and flatten the image, gets flats, darks, bias. We will continue to test the station capabilities in the meantime. Marshall - the subs are on the station drive - I look forward to your take on the data. Pete Laky M90-Luminance-St v2.jpg

Station 3 in the outdoor enclosure
Dear RAC, Today Pete Laky came over and helped me move the telescope from the test stand in my garage to its new home next to Station 2. Here are a few views of the observatory with the roof open and the telescope in its parked position. We had to use a star diagonal to get it to fit and remove the focal reducer. So as it stands the telescope now will be operating at f7 and does have a field flattener in the optical train. It still needs to be focused and polar aligned but once that is done it should be ready for use! The monitor and keyboard are just temporary- once the monitor simulator arrives and is plugged into the computer we will no longer need the monitor in the enclosure. Myron
