Taking a quick look at the equipment list, I could borrow the Celestron NexStar 8SE or the 5 SCT. The Orion SkyView Pro 8 would also be good.

I don't want to use motorized GoTo mounts as a crutch; I would rather learn the sky and use them as a tool later. If, in your opinion, another scope would serve me better, I would appreciate that advice.

I would be interested in purchasing one of the scopes that the group does not plan to keep, with priority given to other members.

Re: Zoom link for Rappahannock Astronomy Club April 2025 Meeting

Hi Michael,

Glad you were able to view the link for our recent club meeting.

Starting with binoculars is a great idea as they can serve as a bridge between naked-eye astronomy and using a telescope. Once you are familiar with some of the constellations and stars, transitioning to a telescope makes sense. we usually recommend becoming familiar with the telescope in the daytime first, then starting with observing the moon. Its big and bright, and can really be a good way to see what the telescope can do with its different accessories and eyepieces. Of course eventually you will want to use it to find the fainter objects like star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. This takes some practice to locate manually, but is the best way to learn the positions of objects in the sky. however, if you would like to not have to worry aboutthat aspect of observational astronomy-you can check out one of our club GOTO scopes. These are more complex to learn how to use but when properly set up-the onboard computer will move the scope for you to locate the object of interest.

Scott Busby (our club equipment manager)recently sent out an inventory of our club telescopes available for checkout. If you did not receive that let me know and I will send it to you. Once you have reviewed it-let me know which scope you might be interested in checking out and I will make arrangements for you to pick it up from me and be trained on its use.

Once again welcome to the RAC-I think you will find the people and expertise in the RAC a great resource for enriching your journey of learning about the night sky!

ASKO/C14 undergoing testing

Dear RAC,

Here¡¯s what the C14 on the ASKO mount looks like as it is being tested in my driveway. I was imaging NGC 2903 and several members of the Hickson 44 compact group when thirst pictures were taken.
Myron

ASKO/ C14 test images (first light?)

Dear RAC and Pete,

Here are "first light" images from the C14 on the ASKO using a QHY 174? camera. these were obtained by using sharpcap live-stacking mode. They are a stack of short sub exposures-about 7 seconds as the mount is not tracking well-its slightly slower than sidereal. It can be fixed by updating the firmware which will be done soon. The images are nearly full frame at the f/11 focus of the C14 (3910mm).The goto was close but not perfect as I was not perfectly polar aligned.?

I used NGC 2903 as my first target, found it visually in the 80mm finder, and then moved the scope manually onto the target.. Once it was in the camera frame-I synched using Cartes du Ceil. From then on the objects were in the FOV as long as the slew wasnt too large.

The large galaxy in NGC 2903, while the two smaller ones are members of the compact group of galaxies Hickson 44 (NGC 3190 group).

These images are just test images and were obtained to determine if the tracking rate on the ASKO needed adjustment (it does). They are way underexposed from an astrophotography standpoint. Nonetheless-they hint at what will be possible with this scope once we get tracking rate set and autoguiding working.

Myron

MSRO/RAC Station 3 test images.

These were taken with the SVX-102T Raptor when objects were low in southwestern sky from my driveway with high clouds and a nearly full moon in the sky. The Horsehead is full frame. The other two were cropped from full frame.

Myron

Station 3 SVX102T-R being tested

Dear RAC,

Here are a couple pictures of the new MSRO/RAC Station 3 telescope. I still have to manage the cables but just waiting on the spacers to reduce the edge distortions in the test images. Note the mini PC riding on the front end of the telescope.

The Keeble Observatory is open Thursday evenings during the semester for public viewing under the direction of Astrophysics students. No RSVP is required; however, each viewing is weather-dependent, so please visit the Keeble Observatory to confirm that the weather is cooperating prior to visiting.

Joining RAS!? We are a very frugal, all volunteer organization, but we do have insurance costs, observatory maintenance, Dark Sky International dues, Astronomical League dues, and costs associated with our various outreach efforts.?

Many thanks to those that have already paid for this year and years past.? If you want to join, you can pay by check, PayPal or credit card using the information at this
.?

If you have any questions about membership, please send us a message at membership@....

When you join RAS:
? > You are automatically a member of the Astronomical League,
? > You are eligible for Astronomical League observing programs,
? > You receive the quarterly Astronomical League publication,
? > You are invited to member-only observing events
? > You can use our library and loaner telescope equipment, and
? > You support astronomy outreach and help us provide positive
???? experiences for school age children and adults

Re: Constellation challenge

My time underway on Cruisers and Destroyers allowed for lots of at sea stargazing.? Just the mast light and running lights. The bridge watch OOD often asked? would? ask me to train the bridge watch and lookouts on stars, planets and constellation star hopping.

Good Morning-

My 23- year old daughter Autumn is on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz which is currently on a long underway in the Pacific Ocean. She works on the flight deck and recently during a lull in aircraft launches she captured some beautiful star portraits. I wanted to share these as I was interested in how many constellations I could identify not knowing the ships position and at least if I could estimate its latitude. I came up with an answer that turned out to be pretty close. She works 10pm - 6am ship time so she gets to see some spectacular dark skies. If anyone would like to try estimating the latitude the Nimitz was at when these were taken - just reply to this thread. Otherwise I thought it would be cool just to share her pictures. The stars are short trails due to the motion of the ship.

IC 443/444 (final test image) Stellarvue 102 SVXT-R

Dear RAC<

Here is the last test image from my session on Wednesday night using the future RAC/ MSRO Station 3 telescope. Its a highly cropped portion of a full frame image of the nebula IC 443/444 in Gemini (Jellyfish Nebula). Stack of 12? 5-minute guided subs (1 hour exposure time). Thank you to Corey D for pointing out this cool supernova remnant one night when we were using his night vision PV-14 on his 16" reflector.

We still need to install spacers to increase the back focus distance to 55mm. Once this is done the star images should be points across the entire full frame.
