Re: RAC star parties

Glenn,
I think we may have one scheduled at James River State Park. I’ll call Marty to verify this and let you know. Thanks for spearheading our Caledon dates. If there are others reading this message who would like to help Glenn with sponsoring star parties at Caledon please let him know. The dates he has proposed are those where he has committed to being there to represent RAC. If there are others in the club who can be at Caledon to represent RAC we might be able to get back to having monthly star parties there.

With only 2hrs those dust lanes are already emerging. That is a great start to galaxy season. I’m in Costa Rica for the week and brought my Seestar with me for fun and it is fun exploring at a totally different latitude.?

This is about 2 hours total integration using BVR filters and the 10" RC with QHY 294 M pro

?Brian,?

Yes during the Red Giant phase the star undergoes instabilities arising from the core. These result in pulsations and mass loss as the outer atmosphere of the star is pushed away. Each pulsation strips away more and more of the stars mass until eventually the intensely hot and dense stellar core is revealed ( the white dwarf). Its prodigious UV radiation causes the hydrogen that was shed during the mass loss phase to light up. That creates the shell we see around planetaries.?

Potpourri of planets

Dear RAC, CAS and Friends,

Tonight ( January 25, 2025)I spent some time imaging the planets with my 12" LX-200 at f/20. I used an old QHY 290C webcam and 2x barlow on the scope. The seeing was not very good as will be evident when looking at the pictures. For Venus and Saturn in particular-their low altitude in the sky made matters worse. The images are all at the same scale which allows for direct comparison of angular size.

Hoping for some better seeing next time!

Myron

That’s a pretty nice image David. Planetary imaging does require a lot of attention to detail and has its own learning curve. I too am still climbing and turns out we were imaging about the same time. I’ll send out my image later tonight after work. I’m still not happy with it- I want to try to get better color balance.?

Dear RAC,
Last night I, too, got a chance to get outside to check out a couple of the planets, specifically Mars and Jupiter.? So, I am now using two cameras for imaging: the trusty Canon M50 MK II, and one that I recently purchased from Scott B: a ZWO ASI385 planetary camera.? The attached picture is a result of my (early!) efforts to utilize the ASI.? When I went out to Scott's house to make my purchase, I also walked out with one of the Club scopes: I am now a "storage facility" (with benefits!!) for an 8" Celestron SCT, though without a mount (mine is adequate for the SCT) and without a diagonal (at some point going to purchase a 2" diagonal and SCT adapter).??
After doing a 3 star alignment of my iOptron CEM26 mount using my 100mm f/9 Sky-Watcher refractor, I put the SCT on the mount and went out to Mars to register the TeleRad.? Wasn't long before I determined that Mars was just a shimmery blob, so I went on to Jupiter.? Much higher in the sky.? I used fairly basic controls, and got a 1,000 image .ser file.? Post processed in AutoStakkert, again, fairly basic (50% if the images), and got this output.? Afterwards I realized that I do not know which way the image should be presented; I was using the camera at prime focus, and didn't pay any real attention to the orientation of the camera.? All part of the learning curve, eh?
