SpaceX Dragon looking good

I was happy to see Dragon get safely into orbit with crew.
I think the biggest significance for astronomy is
this is a step toward things like an observatory
on the Moon and a less fragile, serviceable
successor to the James Webb telescope becoming
routine and accessible.

Being able to get one shot color images like yours sure makes the extra effort, expense and time required for rgb alot easier to justify not doing!

Subject: June 7, 2020 Large Bright Red Light in Southern Night Sky at 10:20pm
To: <president@...>

Hello Rappahannock Astronomy Club,

I am very concerned with what I saw on Sunday night June 7, 2020 and was hoping you could help me to figure out what I saw. I will try my best to explain but if you would rather talk about the details let me know and I will give you my?phone number.

I live in Stafford, Va in the Garrisonville area and on June 7, 2020 I was sitting on my back deck checking emails on my phone and looked up in to the sky and saw this huge bright red circle shaped light flying almost like an airplane would move through the sky, but a bit slower. I was looking at the south sky at 10:20pm and this light was right above the treetops and to the right of the bottom right star in the Corvus constilation (I looked it up on SkyMap).?

At first I was staring at this light trying to figure out why it was so much bigger than a normal airplane light ( I would say it was the size of 5 airplanes if you stuck them all together and flew them in the air). And I was also trying to figure out why the light was so bright and red and did not have any blinking lights around it. The large red light almost had a faint sparkle around the whole circular edge.?

At first the light was moving slowly north and then stopped. That is when I realized it must not be an airplane. Then it went Northeast a tiny bit, then stopped and stayed for about 10 seconds. Then went an even smaller distance to the Northeast again and stopped for about 10 seconds. By this time I turned my camera on my phone and tried to record what I was seeing. The video was not good, but I will attach it. Then the light started to get smaller and smaller and seemed to be going back south or up into the atmosphere? until it literally disappeared, which took like 5 seconds. It moved so quickly as it got smaller and smaller. The whole time there was never a "tail" like you would see on a shooting star. And there was no sound at all.?

The video is so short because it was not picking up the disappearing light very well so I stopped the video to call my husband to come out to see it before it was gone. But he missed it.?

I would say this all happened in 1-2 minutes. It was so unbelievable. I am so confused at what I saw and was wondering if you saw it too?? Or know of anyone else I can ask. It was so weird and have never seen anything like it before. Or is there a night sky camera in the area that I can look up to see if it captured this light too.?

Please advise.?

Thank you for your time!

Jen McAndrews

NOVAC's Questar 7 + Fork Mount for Sale

---------- Forwarded message ---------
Folks --

NOVAC received a Questar 7 telescope and equatorial fork mount donation some time ago for use or other disposition. This is the big brother of the familiar Questar 3 1/2, and offers proportionately better optical performance. The Board has considered how it might be used to benefit NOVAC programs. The Board considered using it for outreach, either public events or group presentations; or putting it into the loaner pool. We brought it to a meeting for members to touch and feel, and took it to AHSP last year to see how it worked as a field instrument. The particulars of this instrument make it inappropriate for any club application we could identify. An individual could use it more effectively.

As a result, the Board decided that it should be sold to help fund more appropriate loaner items and programs.?

Attached you will find a 'sales brochure' for the Questar that provides everything we know about the telescope. While the Board prefers that the Q7 go to a member, as a 501(c)(3) we are obligated to sell it for fair market value. The sale is open to anyone. If you are not interested yourself in the telescope, I encourage you to forward this information to fellow astronomers who might be interested, for the benefit of your club. Note that the OTA and base could be sold separately, should that provide the best value to NOVAC.

If you have any questions, contact Alan (VP@...) or me (president@...).

Clear skies!
-Chris

The June Star Party is Cancelled

Clouds, rain, and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day and evening.? Today's star party was for RAC members only, so I'm not sure it is really necessary to send out a formal cancellation notice, but here it is.
