Re: Imaging Jupiter
Dear RAC,
Last night I, too, got a chance to get outside to check out a couple of the planets, specifically Mars and Jupiter.? So, I am now using two cameras for imaging: the trusty Canon M50 MK II, and one that I recently purchased from Scott B: a ZWO ASI385 planetary camera.? The attached picture is a result of my (early!) efforts to utilize the ASI.? When I went out to Scott's house to make my purchase, I also walked out with one of the Club scopes: I am now a "storage facility" (with benefits!!) for an 8" Celestron SCT, though without a mount (mine is adequate for the SCT) and without a diagonal (at some point going to purchase a 2" diagonal and SCT adapter).??
After doing a 3 star alignment of my iOptron CEM26 mount using my 100mm f/9 Sky-Watcher refractor, I put the SCT on the mount and went out to Mars to register the TeleRad.? Wasn't long before I determined that Mars was just a shimmery blob, so I went on to Jupiter.? Much higher in the sky.? I used fairly basic controls, and got a 1,000 image .ser file.? Post processed in AutoStakkert, again, fairly basic (50% if the images), and got this output.? Afterwards I realized that I do not know which way the image should be presented; I was using the camera at prime focus, and didn't pay any real attention to the orientation of the camera.? All part of the learning curve, eh?

Mars on night of January 18,2025
Dear RAC and friends, Last night i was able to capture some images of mars and Jupiter before the clouds came in. The seeing was pretty good so I used my 35 year old Meade 12" LX-200. The hand control and motors died long ago so I replaced them with steppers and now control the telescope via laptop. Enclosed is an image of Mars taken just before the clouds interfered as well as my setup. I hope to get to some Jupiter images soon and will send those out as well. |

Hello club members. I was asked by a friend of mine for a favor. She¡¯s a cello teacher at Mary Washington college. She¡¯s doing a concert at the college consisting of Star Wars music and Star Trek music. Sha asked me if I could do a picture show of astronomy pictures taken by local astronomers. I¡¯m asking the club members if they have any pictures they¡¯ve taken that I can use for the show. Any pictures used will be credited to the photographer. You can send them to my email. Thank you Troymajor61@....

Corrected Zoom Link for January 2025 RAC Meeting
Dear RAC, Sorry about previous link sent stating it was for the January 2025 RAC Meeting. It was actually for the Decemeber meeting. This is the correct link for the January meeting from a few days ago. Mars Occultation January 13, 2025
Dear RAC, Here is the zoom link for the Live Zoom session recording the recent auscultation of Mars by the moon. I used the 10" MSRO/RAC telescope and we had some engaging discussion along the way with several RAC members! Zoom Link for January 2025 RAC meeting
Dear RAC, For those who were not able to attend our recent meeting, I have enclosed the Zoom link. The program was provided by myself giving a demonstration on remote observing with the MSRO/RAC 10" RC telescope. We observed Jupiter, Mars, and M42. A near IR view into M42
Good Morning, A couple nights ago during the RAC meeting-we connected remotely to the MSRO/RAC 10" telescope. It was suggested we observe M42, so using SharpCap we obtained these two images. Each is a stack of 10 8-second exposures. The difference is we used a Johnson/Bessel V ( green )band filter for one, and an I? ( near infra-red) for the other image. We were amazed at how many more stars that were obscured by the dust in the V band image appeared in the near IR image. Theoretically we understood that IR telescopes are use to probe into dusty star forming regions-but to actually see that concept demonstrated during our live viewing session was really cool! Here is an animation showing our results. It shows how real science can be done with backyard telescopes! Hope you enjoy the video. Per suggestions from club members-I have saved the format as MP4. Hopefully it can be viewed easily. Myron Wasiuta |

Mars-Moon Occultation
As Myron mentioned in the meeting tonight, I was out photographing the occasion while he was live streaming.? I simply used my Nikon camera with a 400MM zoom?lens....no telescope attached,.? ?On the left, right before occultation (at 7:00 in relation to the moon)? and on the right.....just after!! (at 1:00)? So fun!!!

January 13, 2025 Mars occultation egress
Dear RAC and CAS, As mentioned in my previous email-I also recorded the egress. The initial part was hard to watch? as I was moving the frame ROI causing the view to be shaky. I removed that part and just concentrated on the steadier sequence. The seeing was slightly better than at ingress but still pretty poor. As with the other video I used a 10" f7.9 RC and QHY 294 M Pro with a red filter to help with seeing. This is just a tiny cropped section of the full frame. Myron |
January 13, 2025 Mars Occultation Ingress
Dear RAC and CAS, Here is a short video cropped in on the planet as it is covered by the moon last night. The seeing was very poor and even with the red filter the view was turbulent. Sorry about the file size-i tried to clip the length just to the event. I also have one showing the egress about an hour later Myron |
couple pictures of Mars Occultation
Dear RAC and CAS, Here are a couple frame grabs from video made just before and after the Lunar occultation of Mars. I used a 10" RC telescope, QHY 294M Pro camera, and a R filter to help with the seeing (which was terrible). It was a fun event to watch and look forward to seeing pictures others captured. Myron |
Post event discussion and Station 2 shutdown
Dear RAC,
After the event, Claire Gardner, Scott Busby and I shared thoughts and Claire showed us her great image of the egress. At the very end I recorded a live view of the Station 2 telescope being parked and stowed for the night after a great occultation event! Myron Passcode: Bg3bU=6K |
