JST crimping

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Can someone please help me to learn how to crimp JST XH connectors?? I have watched over 2 dozen youtube videos that claim to be for JST but are actually for DuPont connectors which are longer than XH.

The only video that even gave me a clue that the jaws could not be any wider than 4mm was this one:

The XH connector is only about 7mm long and only 4mm can be under the die.?? The problem I am having is that I bought a "micro crimper":

but have the hardest time getting the pin into the die.? The micro version seems to be just a bit too small (groove) to get the pin in.

So with all that said,? can someone help me learn how to do these connectors?

Thank you.

I gave up on that crimping and went with pre-crimped from pololu.com

Works well for the NorCal 40A 25th anniversary PCBs you get via those board houses like JLCPCB

sorry about bold... typo... and i am hurry

I use these JST XH connectors in my projects. You need the proper crimping tool to do it right. The choice of crimping tool? and the correct position for your wire gauge ?is vital.?
?
A lot of the Chinese crimping tools do a poor job of crimping these connectors, I had to buy another tool after the first one with blue colored handle grips made very unreliable crimps. The second tool I purchased YEFYM model SN-2549S (red and blue with a silver colored crimp die) has been doing a great job.
I attached a picture of the second tool.

Hello Steve.

I actually just received a iCrimp from Amazon:

The jaws even the front thin one is more than 4mm so I had a bit of trouble loading that very short XH pin into the die.? I did make it work and the connection is good but I did have to use the front opening of the die.? Even then it was hard to get the pin positioned in a good place in the tool to make the crimp.? It did work but not the best way to do it.? Maybe I will get the hang of it one day.

I was crimping pins for a JST male header on the CalQRP W8BH LC meter.

Thank you.

I'll probably be banished for this, but in a pinch (pun intended) I've used needle nose pliers and hand crimped jst/dupont type connectors.? I wouldn't do it for a connector that sees repeated use but for connections that are only going to be made/broken a few times it worked good enough.? My plan was always to acquire a proper crimper and redo my connections but something shiny distracted me and I forgot all about it.? This is more of a confession than a recommendation.? Do not listen to me.? Do not do this.

I have to fiddle with mine a bit too.?

These tools won't be a perfect match to the contact and will not be as good as the tool you buy from the connector manufacturer. (For several hundred dollars typically) The rear crimps on the contact sometimes needs to be pressed a little towards each other to fit in the die, and I have to bias the contact slightly towards the front. However, I can insert the contact from the back of the crimp die (At least in my crimp tool).

Highly recommend the ¡°engineer¡± crimping tools like
?
they are not cheap, and you will want to buy all 3.
?
?You also need to individually crimp the wire and insulation prongs, but they are the first set of crimpers that I had success with.?

Steve,

I want to get a similar tool. Is there markings on the die that show the size and are they in mm or AWG? I ntice some dies have AWG markings and some in millimeter.

I purchased this crimper set a couple years ago and it covers a lot of bases.

I admit to not doing JST connectors, but I have been able to satisfactorily do any crimp connector I have come across.
?
And like others have said, there is a little fiddling sometimes, and if I was doing thousands, and trying to minimize production time I would buy the proper tool.
?
That usually isn't the case on our benches though.
?
I also have another rachet crimper set that does just about any size of coax connector.

Powerwerx also has some nice sets that are not insanely priced.
?
Happy tinkering.
