Honbay trimmers; I took one for the team
Got the envelope with the selection of Honbay trimmers
from Amazon.? They arrived next day as advertised. They are cheap and I do mean cheap with respect to quality control and any value they may have using them. I won't be using them in anything I ever build. The tuning screwdriver is going to be almost 1/2 whatever you are using for the Murata N750 or N1200 caps. They are not on my list of approved critters in my lab.? Got to Tayda and get them for around $0.18 to $0.32 for the few values they have in stock. So I took one for the team and wasted some money for the experiment.? Hope this helps you. They look the same to me.

I think I'm going to do what we did in qrp-tech for the anniversary build of the NorCal 40A.? Instead of spending a lot of dough on the variable cap, a lot of us just friction fit different fixed caps in place and used the one that got us close enough. It takes time, but we know what we are getting. Thanks for taking one for the team also.? Education is expensive no matter how you get it. ciao, On 4/10/25 13:34, Doug W via groups.io wrote:

Hey Doug, Let us know how the AliExpress trimmers perform.? I ordered them also. Thanks ! Jim WB4ILP? On Thu, Apr 10, 2025, 4:34 PM Doug W via <dougwilner=[email protected]> wrote:

In keeping up with the mob, I had been buying my trimmers from JameCo. They are the ceramic ones and -- importantly -- a slot screwdriver fits and can turn the little buggers. (Done with the little brown plastic turdballs!)
?
At increments of 10, they are 99 cents and at 100 are 89 cents.
?
Be warned and be ready to order $20 of stuff otherwise they tap you for the difference.

Like you (and probably most everyone else) I don't like those little brown things. I have a small stash of them that I bought from Diz a few years ago. I need to finish them up so I can switch over to these ones. Jameco are local to me. I wish their selection was more comprehensive, so I could order from them more often. Nevertheless, I feel a Jameco order coming on :-) ?

The Jameco trimmers are available on Amazon also.? 98? and free shipping if you have Amazon Prime. BTW, are the Jameco trimmers newly manufactured or NOS? Jim WB4ILP? On Fri, Apr 11, 2025, 5:04 PM k6whp via <k6whp=[email protected]> wrote:

New or NOS? Cannot say. I'm inclined to the former because Jameco publishes their stock count and claims new shipments arriving periodically.?
?
I have made purchases spanning a year or more and they're always available.
?
Oh, great news on the Amazon availability. That scotches Jameco's minimum purchase amount.?

Yes, probably newly manufactured.? I did notice that Jameco says "more on the way".? I just wasn't sure if anyone is still making quality ceramic variable caps of any size.? So many things now are only available as cheap plastic. I always check Amazon for just about everything.? I'm usually surprised at what I can find and with Prime I always have free shipping. Is anyone else having a delay in getting a shipment from Jameco? I ordered parts on 3/25/25 and still have not received shipment. Just curious... 73, Alan, N8WQ On 4/11/25 17:04, k6whp via groups.io wrote:

I got these from Amazon, thanks to your suggestion - and thank you to William K6WHP for the original mention. I don't know if these are representative, but they do seem a bit stiff. They're not quite as easy to turn as I'd hoped they would be. In light of that, I don't think I dislike the little brown things as much as I did. Some of my little brown 60pF caps are erratic in their rotation, while others turn smoothly. These are cool though. They'll get used.

Hey Alan, I haven't ordered from Jameco lately but I have recently had multiple packages lost or delayed.? One item ordered from Lowes on December 20, 2024 arrived March 15, 2025 after being shown as lost on the tracking page. An Amazon shipment was lost and replaced in January and just today Amazon is sending a replacement for yet another lost shipment.? Another package from Amazon was delayed 2 weeks after it left an Amazon facility. Jim WB4ILP? On Sun, Apr 13, 2025, 10:26 AM Alan N8WQ via <oalanjones=[email protected]> wrote: Gang, |
Thanks Dave, I assume the green paint on the Jameco trimmers is a color code? On AliExpress I saw ceramic trimmers very similar to the Jameco units at $1.00 for qty 5 with free shipping and several values were listed.? Almost sounds too good to be true.? Do a search on AliExpress for "ceramic trimmer capacitors" and they should pop up. They look decent in the pictures. Jim WB4ILP? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJim,My wife and I are having the same issues with Amazon so I feel your pain! :( My last order from Tayda Electronics was the slowest ever. It took 16 days. My main strategy to compensate for the delays and screw ups is to stock up on your parts now! :) 73, Alan, N8WQ On 4/15/25 22:35, Jim WB4ILP via

Over the last many years my wife and I have ordered lots of things from Amazon and other online sellers with very few damaged, lost or late deliveries but over the last five months or so we had several issues.? Tracking would show that a shipment was scanned into a facility but never scanned out.? It seems to me that the issues started in the 2024 Christmas season maybe due to the heavy online gift ordering. Jim WB4ILP? I received my order today.? For less than the price of well anything these days these aren't any worse than I was expecting.? They are the same cheapo brown plastics ones that everyone sells.? My meter shows the expected values.? I may buy more in different value ranges before World War Fee kicks into full gear.
