Great resurse. I have vol 9, with 294 pages, full OK on my HDD. If you will not find, I can to send via transfer (have 82+Mo). Ady/YO8AZQ Nu au fost ucisi copaci prin trimiterea acestui mesaj. Re: NorCal site
I recently downloaded a number of the NorCal manuals, figuring several of those projects would be prime candidates for homebrew/Manhattan building.
Re: Small Wonder manuals Brian -- I'm not sure if these are what you're looking for, exactly, but I would point you to the website for Midway Electronics, which has manuals for their current adaptation of Dave's design: And also the special issue of QRPp (v6n3, Autumn 1998) detailing the Small Wonder 40+ build: I hope this helps. 73 de Todd W2TEF |
Fake PIC16F628A Chips
I am sure many of us have built the cheap crystal checker/counter available in kit form from China. I have previously used them twice before for receiver frequency displays. They use a PIC16F628A in a circuit that I think originated with DL4YHF.?
?
A couple of months ago I ordered a couple more of these kits intending to use them in upcoming projects.
?
When they arrived I quickly built one up intending to use it to help with some software development I was working on. It did not work. Annoyed I checked my construction. You get no circuit with the kit but the circuit is pretty simple. I quickly realized that the time base oscillator (20MHz) was not working. I found that the crystal was okay so I put the PIC chip in my programmer thinking that it may not be programmed and found it didn't meet the device ID for a PIC16F628 and didn't pass any other tests as a PIC chip. Okay I thought maybe I had received a dud.
?
The PIC16F628 from the second kit also acted the same way. I left a bad review on the sellers site and ordered another kit from a different vendor. I am sure you have already guessed I had the same result with the PIC chip from this new kit when it arrived.
?
I tried to obtain some PIC16F628 chips locally but my normal suppliers have deleted the DIP version. I did manage to get a SMD version and soldered this to an SMD to DIP adapter board. I managed to prove that this was the problem but during the process destroyed the kit's PIC's socket with the thicker adapter board pins. Finally some PIC' chips arrived from? . After programming at last they gave me working counters.
?
I am very aware of fakes from China but thought that kits would be okay. I just can't understand the logic of someone supplying fake chips in a kit. They will just destroy the market for those kits. Even if whoever put the kits together was sold fakes by someone else it has to mean that they have no quality control process in place.
?
So I thought I would put this out there in case others have also fallen for these fakes. The good news is that the rest of the kit seems okay so if you replace the fake chips with real programmed PIC16F628 chips you will get a working counter.

Re: 2SC5706 from Kits and Parts
Thank you Mike N2MS and Chuck AA7FO (that new callsign is going to take a bit of getting used to). Mike - Dan's also has the 2SC2078, which is an old CB PA transistor. Another potential contender. I've gotten some good stuff from Danny in the past. Advisable to call him on the important stuff before putting in an order, unless you don't mind substitutions.
Chuck - you're right that a component tester is a good start, but doesn't tell the full story. I've bought fake PA transistors that looked good in a tester, but wouldn't put out any appreciable power. Good info on the 2SC5706 surviving high SWR. I have a BS170 in the final of a homebrew WSPR transmitter that can operate indefinitely into no load, but that's because I'm only driving it to 200mW output, which is fine for WSPR. For CW though, one needs a bit more power. I'm a fan of the full QRP gallon. ?

You might want to look at the schematics of the 1W and 5W series retired from KitsAndParts.com and see how they are used.? I also got Diz to use the 3-pin 2.54mm female headers for sockets, just in case.? And the screw+bolt to hold the heat sink saves a lot of head scratching. I have a 5W for 20m sitting here on my desk awaiting an order for 2SC5706s from another vendor.? Didn't see Mike's way down the order form. Sorry Mike. I'll check the real ones and then check for fakes.? I'm thinking 14MHz is good enough to test for my needs. Speaking of fakes.? I use a component tester to check the box of transistors for h_FE.? That is necessary but not sufficient for a good test. Anyone Manhattan up this test fixture?? I will when I get through the ADC-40. Maybe some has already been there and done that and give us a report. Just to see how high the critters will go from China. <>? h_FE test fixture.? Use with a digital VFO to sweep for DC to 100MHz or so.? That's my plan.? What's yours? FYI chuck, aa7fo BTW.? The 2SC5706 will survive a 'I forgot to hook up the antenna situation', at least in a 1W or 5W.? I can't say the same for a 2N2222 or BS170. On 3/30/25 11:23, davidgeorgerichards via groups.io wrote:
I notice that Kits and Parts have a good quantity of the through-hole version of the 2SC5706. I think the through-hole version of this transistor is now obsolete, which is why I'm interested. I'm attempting a scratch-build of a 2N2 for 20M, and wondering if this transistor would be a suitable replacement for the 2SC5739 final? Either way, it looks as if it could be useful for QRP PA's. |

Glad you and everyone enjoy the publication. For those that have lifetime subs to ARRL.? Remember back in the '90s they had the DVDs that had the whole issue of QST including ads and the member ads in the back?? It is my understanding now, that you have access to all the old articles but not the ads.? I enjoyed being able to see what prices of rigs were back in the old days.? If I paid for advertising in an issue I'd expect it to be forever. In QRPp we get to see what bargains we had in the day and to refresh our memory on how much we spent for this and that.? Might not be a good idea, but it is there. Doug published the initial issues for free and then went to $5 per year and I find it awesome to consider the value.? Priceless. thanks to all and to all a good night, chuck, aa7fo On 3/30/25 06:52, davidgeorgerichards via groups.io wrote:

So, if you go to <> and search for 'QRPp Journal', Thanks for this Chuck. I downloaded all 11 volumes a few years ago, from your old site, I believe. It's good to have the other scans that are on the Internet Archive, as well as Don's index (thank you Don). QRPp, for me, exemplified the spirit of homebrew QRP amateur radio. Far more interesting than pages of full color glossy ads for brand new commercial gear. Plus, the aesthetic and form factor of QRPp was spot-on. The physical journal was a manageable size, just inviting one to thumb through it multiple times. I don't know - maybe it's just me, but I find it more fun to leaf through a small publication like this, than a full-size 8.5 x 11 publication. I'm a member of GQRP, and enjoy SPRAT for the same reasons too.

Good stuff, good stuff. Thank you, thank you!
