Hello Joel,
There are a lot of experts on here that can better explain that I can like Chuck Adams, William, Curt, etc..
?
But here are my thoughts for now until they reply.? I still consider myself a novice when it comes to home brewing ham radios.
?
Take a look at these message topics from Chuck Adams:
?
See this link from Chuck Adams - now, some security software may complain, just ignore it.? Chuck may have a self-signed certificate.
?
Start with something small like the SolderSmoke Direct Conversion Receiver Challenge that Curt mentioned in the previous message.
I am working on this today as a matter of fact.?
?
Download the various PDFs and images from the web page and save them.? Print some of them out.
Search on YouTube for these videos.

ABCFAB on EBAY has the copper PCBs.
Places like Amazon sells copper PCBs as well.
You can cut your own island pads via tin nibbler, but they do not look good.? But they will get you started until you can find you something more elegant.
?
My first home brew project built using Manhattan construction using island pads was a G3UUR Crystal Tester circuit I found in the book Experimental Methods in RF Design?? And I did it in one night and it worked.? But I used good Gorilla super glue gel at the time.
?
I like Manhattan Construction because i do not need to keep flipping the board back and forth to plug in parts and solder them.? And other boards you have to remember which way the parts are connected.? So, Manhattan seemed more natural to me with how the layout of the parts to the schematic are.
