It uses fixed capacitors that are switched rather than the more typical polyvaricon variable capacitors. it is modeled after a VK3YE, Peter Parker, tuner. Ernie has a new callsign NE3TE . He picked it because it has a very low CW call weight. Jerry long time QRPer and is into building more than operating. He is building a beacon monitor out of an old military rig. Ed showed how the NCDXF/IARU beacon project works. https://www.ncdxf.org/beacon/index.html. He recently work some rare DX while operating POTA. Ernie and Pete are discussing the PERformer vertical antenna which use elevated radials. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqw3ultuPQg Stuart is working on a Michigan Mighty Mite. He wanted to know what would be a good receiver to go along with it Ed suggested a MRX-40 Mini receiver. https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/pdf/99759.pdf Scott has a HB receiver based on the Tayloe detector that he thinks would be good. It is Ernie¡¯s birthday today. HAPPY BIRTDAY John working on his CW skills and is building a Rooster transceiver but waiting on some eye surgery to get more into building. https://www.kanga-products.co.uk/ourshop/prod_8079267-Rooster-40m-30m-or-20m-CW-Transceiver.html Yvon purchased a used Xiegu x5105. https://www.radioddity.com/collections/hf-transceiver/products/xiegu-x5105 Both his Xiegu 6100 and 5105 have issues he needs to fix. FS: MTR 4Bv2.3
2
My MTR 4Bv2 is for sale. It first went on the air in late 2023, and was only used indoors. It's in good condition and includes powerpole DC cord, cheater sticker and instructions. I like the quiet receiver, 600-hz center, readable display and 80-meter capability. For those unfamiliar with this radio, it works great with high-sensitivity earbuds or ear speakers that have a built-in volume control. TX & RX working great on all bands. I've seen used ones going for $400-$470. I'm asking $330 - cash. Local pickup only, nearby Pasadena, CA Please send me an email or PM if interested. Thanks & 73 Jay W6CJ

CW Practice / Rag Chew
6
My next CW practice / rag chew session will be on Saturday 15 March on 20 meters at 09:00 EDT, 13:00 UTC. Anyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW by getting on the air. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - 20 March Time - 09:00 EDT 13:00 UTC Band - 20 Meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF

QRP-ARCI Spring QSO Party
Save the date! It's not too early to plan to carve out some time for yourself during the weekend of April 12th. That's the date of the QRP-ARCI Spring QSO Party! It's a 6 hour Sprint, that begins at 0000 UTC Saturday morning on April 12th (that would be Friday evening April 11th here in the USA). Of course, put in whatever time you can, but please make an effort to get on the air and participate, even if it's just for a little while! Last year in 2024, we had 16 QRPers send in a log to the Autolog at https://www.qrpcontest.com/qrparci_spring/ You do NOT have to be a member of QRP-ARCI to participate, but keep in mind that QRP-ARCI literally has thousands of members - certainly we can easily surpass the number of 2024 entries with ease! As an added bonus we're at the top of Cycle 25! So if you're a regular participant, thanks so much and join us again! If you haven't been in a QRP-ARCI Sprint in a while (or ever!), dust off that rig, fire it up and join in on the fun! Rumor has it that certificates may be in the offering for the top scorers! 72 de Larry W2LJ - QRP-ARCI Contest Manager

MI QRP Weekly Zoom Chat
We had nine folks join the MI QRP Zoom Chat on 13 March. Please join us Thursday March 20 (and every Thursday) at 4PM Eastern for the Michigan QRP Club weekly QRP Chat where the main topics will be QRP and other ham interests. New hams are encouraged to participate and ask questions. It's fun, it's easy, and it's free. You only need a computer, a smart phone, or a tablet that can connect to the Internet. OR if you can't be close to any of those you can join by audio with any standard phone. Just follow the directions below. No software needs be loaded or installed. Anyone can join and non members are welcome. Details are here: https://www.miqrp.net/zoom The topic for Thursday, 20 March will be AN OPEN FOURM. Ed AB8DF Ernie W3ETE Stan WB8QJZ Casey KC9IH Rick K8BMA Dave N8SBE Frank KB4VU Stuart M0SGV Yvon AE7YD Effective starting next week there will be a new ID number will be 811 0835 6229. This ID should be good going forward. Ernie will be hosting from now on. It seems that the FCC will be revising rules and other changes. Standby for any impact to the amateur radio community. Lots of rumors. There is a new antenna design that is getting some buzz called the Performer. https://whiteriverradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/POTA-PERformer-Antenna-by-KJ6ER-2023-03-1-1.pdf It is a vertical antenna with one (at least) tuned radial. A VE ham has a YouTube video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa8se-6NJSY Why does it work better than ground radials? Several said that the elevated radials work better than ground radials. Do radials steer the signal? Less ground losses? Ed showed some photos form his trip in Iceland. There was a museum in Sk¨®gar where there was a large collection of radios. We are sorry for the short meeting. We are transitioning from one Zoom host to a new Zoom host and there were some hiccups. The agenda for the 20 March QRP Chat: Ernie to do a short introduction and acknowledge any new folks to the Zoom chat. Next week will be an Open Forum. During the open forum anyone can take the floor. We will go one by one until all have had a chance to have the floor. Files, pictures and presentations can be shared if you have any. However, a Spartan Sprint participant running 5 watts who is submitting results is allowed to work a non-QRP station. That contact will count. (A Non-QRP station is not permitted to submit results for this QRP event.) OPERATION We operate CW on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters, around standard QRP frequencies. Working the same station on a different band counts as another contact. The weight of your station consists of everything except your antenna and feed line. If your station includes your home-based rig, antenna tuner, DC power supply, heavy paddle or bug - obviously you are not lightweight - simply report your weight as 30 lbs. (That is the default weight for the Tubby division.) REPORTING To report your results, go to 3830scores.com 3830 Scores Home , and select the ¡®ARS Spartan Sprint¡¯ (on the Left side). You will enter your [Station Weight] and the [Number of Contacts] that you made.
