it is weird, because I receive the issues that was sent out extra to me. It took less than two weeks.?

Re: QRP Quarterly Mailing

Received the QRP Quarterly in the post (Dublin, Ireland).?

Re: QRP Quarterly Mailing

I received the April, 2025 issue of QQ today 13 May, 2025. ?I was dismayed to see that voting for directors closed on 11 May, 2025 and realize that the two candidates that I would vote for will be without my support. ?
?
These days with decreasing postal service times (this issue took 29 days to reach me) we may want to consider different methods and timing involved with issues like elections. ?If we, in fact, announced the elections and candidates earlier then the blame is on me. ?Perhaps I could have voted on the web site but did not think to check that out.
?
Just something to consider for the coming year.

Soon there will be a link for "Ham Club Online" for the AZ scQRPions".Not too far behind, only expired in 2017, why rush?? ?;>)

best 72 to you all.
Looking forward to the June meeting at Fast Eddies Diner.

Where is May going?

Last Sunday was Mother's Day! This weekend is FDIM and Hamvention! In two weekends it will be Memorial Day here in the US and you know what that means !!!!!!! The "unofficial beginning of Summer, and of course the QRP-ARCI Hoot Owl Sprint!
?
About a month ago we had the Spring QSO Party and we had almost double the entries that we had in 2024. Let's do the same for the Hoot Owl Sprint! In 2024 we had 9 logs submitted via the AutoLog. Surely we can do better than that! The Sprint is ONLY an hour long and it's way more fun when we can jam as many QSOs as we can into that hour.
?
All the details can be found here:?
?
I will be there, with my paddle bursting with dits and dahs. Hope you will be, too!

CW Practice / Rag Chew

开云体育

Michigan QRP Club

On May 11 I had a CW practice / rag chew session on 17 meters. I worked two stations:

Conditions were poor with heavy QSB. I heard several very weak stations calling but could not copy callsigns. If you were one of them maybe next time will be better. SSN = 70, SFI = 1134, A = 12, K = 2. I was using my Elecraft K3 at 100 watts with my 100 foot sloped doublet.

Anyone and everyone is welcome. These practice sessions are? intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions.

My next CW practice session will be TBD at TBD EDT / TBD UTC on TOD meters. I will be away attending FDIM and Hamvention. I will schedule the next session when I get back. I will be manning the Michigan QRP Club both at Club night. Please stop by and say Hi. Also we are offering a special FDIM discount for Michigan QRP Club memberships.

Details:
Date - TBD
Time -
TBD
Band - TBD

How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF.

That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO.

Re: Love me some OLD QRP

For a little bit of old-time QRP, you may want to watch the video I did a few?years ago for the Long Island CW Club- Odyssey of the Argonauts-??

I was messing around in the garage last night and found my old SMK-1 transceiver from 2001.? So I bought it in to my office and connected a battery, a speaker, antenna, and a key and was pleasantly surprised that it fired up, and was putting out about 300 milliwatts on 7040+/- !

The SST was going on last night so I answered a call from Illinois and worked AD9CA Mike in Newton IL.? He heard me.? He asked me to repeat my call so I did, and we had an exchange.? I got 449 for 300 milliwatts, and he was a solid 579 here.

So that was about 145 miles from the old attic dipole antenna, and I was very happy.? See for more details.

Then tonight I pulled my old K1 (Ser #1250) and tuned it up on 40m.? My battery must be low because I can only get about 3w out on 7052.5 and the attic dipole.? I heard WA9WFV calling CQ from up in Wisconsin so I answered him and we had a great 20 minute QSO.? He was at a park with his FT 897 and running 20w with a battery powering the station...but NOT POTA.? Mike was just there in a park enjoying the great weather....60 and sunny.? While here is was cloudy and 55 with rain on the way.

I built this K1 in? May 2002 right after I got home from Dayton with it.? It's been a great little radio.? Maybe my almost 50 yr old HW-8 will get tried next.

You all have fun at the Hamvention and FDIM next week!? I hope to get back there in 2026.

Re: Love me some OLD QRP

Hi Brian,
?
I’m not trying to brag but I have a K1, K2/100, KX2, and KX3. If the boss said I can have only one, it’s the K1 without a second thought. If I manage to convince her that “2 is 1 and 1 is none” then it’s the K1 and K2.
?
Not that the KX2 & 3 are not amazing technology, they are, but as a 99.9% CW op who wears headphones 100% of the time, the DSP rigs seem to be more fatiguing to listen to over extended periods of time.
?
But this is one guy’s opinion and it’s worth what you paid for it…lol

Tube lovers, (silent key) keep these tubes out of a landfill

?A friend of mine, Jack Kinnucan WA8CYJ, passed away two years ago and his wife is now disposing a large cache of vacuum tubes. She says they made a list of all the tubes a few hears ago. My feeling is that she just wants to keep them out of a landfill.
